If you can possibly afford it, I think that a condenser mic will make a huge difference in the quality of both voice and guitar recording. I wouldn't recommend a dynamic mic for either application, except as "something to try" to get a different sound when things are feeling stale. You might look into the AKG C1000 or the Rode NT1 (both ~100$). Both of those will require a 48V phantom power source (the Blue Tube I mentioned has one built in). The C1000 is a pretty good acoustic guitar mic; it may or may not treat your voice well. THe NT1 is supposed to be a little more versatile (I haven't used it personally). If you can, find a store that will let you audition the mics, because different mics sound better with different voices in ways that are a little hard to predict. Although it is likely that almost whatever your first condenser mic is will be such a huge step from dynamic mics that you will be blown away. I don't know if this was just the music store near me or what, but I picked up a $70 condenser mic made by a Chinese electronics company called MCA (no relation). I sure thought it was worth $70, anyway, and if I'm stretching yer budget too much you might see if you can score one for a similar price. - -- d. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 04 Apr 2002 09:11:00 -0500 From: "Aaron Milenski" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] 24 (only very mild spoilers) > > I still can't believe they killed off Javier Vachon in Forever Knight. >Sometimes nothing is sacred. > Lots of characters get jkilled in final episodes. And the song "I Must Not Think Bad Thoughts" seems to >apply all too well again. I deliberately left MORE FUN out, because I don't like it that much. There's a stiffness, didacticism, and even X-by-rote-ness to some of the tracks that just leaves me cold, and the sequencing never lets the album build up any kind of momentum. That being said, last year it was one of the beneficiaries of my deliberate periodic "let's give disappointing albums another shot" campaign, and free of the expectations generated by their first three outings, I enjoyed it much more than I did in the mid-'80s. "True Love" (pts 1 *and* 2), "I See Red," "Drunk in My Past," and "Devil Doll" -- the tracks less laden with Reaganomic portent (even though I agree with X's politics) -- are the ones that stood out for me this time. I should also note that the three X albums Tom and I just discussed (MORE FUN IN THE NEW WORLD, AIN'T LOVE GRAND, and SEE HOW WE ARE) are getting the nice remaster/bonus track treatment given to the first three last year, and are currently scheduled for release on May 21st. I don't give a darn if we ever see HEY ZEUS! in any form again. Besides its title stealing my longstanding idea for a sitcom premise, it's a reunion album that never should have been made. No passion, and worse, no songs. I wouldn't even remember a title from it if I didn't have the "Country at War" CD-5. >On the smoother side, "Unclogged" is a live semi-acoustic revamping of >many of their great songs. BEDAZZLED has been a cult favorite for a long time, and it's a shame that yet again a classic movie has been remade and will be remembered that way. You'd think that if anyone would have gotten it right it would have been the Times, but even they blew it. I would argue that most of his post-"10" movies are unremarkable. "10" too, for that matter. _________________________________________________________________ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Apr 2002 14:04:26 -0500 From: "John Sharples" Subject: [loud-fans] The Day Sharples Finally Posted Something about Scott Miller Man, what an awesome package I just retrieved from the post office: Contents: one LOLITA NATION CD (on Enigma), one BIG PLANS Let's Active CD. I'm referring to "Beat The Retreat". I haven't heard the one with Miss Williams (along with her guitar, I presume), so I can't compare the two, but I'll gladly stand up and say that BTR is very enjoyable. I find myself listening to it quite often, especially when the rest of the CD-changer is filled with the real McCoy (RT). The track that X performs is nicely done and Los Lobos acquit themselves well. Syd Straw/Evan Dando do a great job too, and how could you not like Evan Dando? A nice thing about it is that a lot of the tracks use the same backing band, so it holds together quite well. On the downside, REM completely ruins "Wall of Death" and Bonnie Raitt makes an incongruous appearance. The payoff, however, is Bob Mould's version of "Turning of the Tide". It actually betters the original. Perhaps this might be a good time to mention that I was lucky enough to see Mr. Thompson the other night at the University of California - Irvine. I won't bore you with the details of how he is the finest guitar player around or how he's a songwriting genius - you know all that already. But if you've never seen him live, it's worth it just to hear the stories he's got to tell. He went on and on about how Madonna had rented a castle to get married. The bit was priceless. He tours often if I'm not mistaken. Keep your eyes open, because his shows aren't always advertised through the normal channels (his Irvine show was listed amongst the ballet and performance art listings in the LA Times, for example). He's probably on his way to your town - unless you live in some cultural backwater like Denver.
