I'll admit a strong bias, but the self-titled CD by the Reputation (officially released today) is my favorite thing I've heard so far with a 2002 date stamp on it. Anyone who enjoyed Elizabeth Elmore's previous band Sarge won't be disappointed. I was never a fan of Slowdive or Mojave 3, but I really like the new CD by frontman Neil Halstead, which sounds to me exactly like a Carthage british folk record circa 1974- Halstead's voice even has a passing similarity to Nick Drake's. As for "late to the party" discoveries- Ken Stringfellow's "Touched" has really grown on me, and I wish it had placed higher on the LF list. And it's not at all thislisty, but I absolutely love the Liars' "They Threw Us All In A Trench And Stuck A Monument On Top." They're an NYC quartet with an Australian frontman that gets compared to the Birthday Party a lot (probably because of the Aussie connection), but I hear more Bush Tetras, Gang of Four, ESG, and other deep underground early 80s NYC sounds. I also see Brendan Benson has a new one out, and is touring heavily. Is this his first since One Mississippi (which I really liked, as did others on this list)? Even more impressively, I didn't think Sarge were worth the powder it would take to blow them to hell (they just sounded like Cub cross-pollinated with Go Sailor to me) and I really dig this album too. >I also see Brendan Benson has a new one out, and is touring heavily. >Is this his first since One Mississippi (which I really liked, as >did others on this list)? Anyone heard it? I haven't heard it, but I've noticed it's getting a surprising amount of attention in relatively mainstream media -- it's been mentioned in Entertainment Weekly at least a couple times, and the local papers have both reviewed it. I'm not a drummer, but my understanding is that the definition of a drummer playing "in the pocket" is actually a little more specific than that. It's hard to put into words due to my non-percussive mind, but imagine a metronome that's ticking away in 4/4 time: all four beats in each bar are perfectly timed and evenly spaced. When a drummer is playing in the pocket, the unaccented beats in each bar are played just a little behind where they're "supposed" to be. (If they're just a little *ahead* of where they're supposed to be, that's something different -- I've heard it called "rushing the beat," though it probably has other common names.) This is a hazy recollection of my professor's explanation in a jazz appreciation class I took in college something like eight or nine years ago, and it's entirely possible that either I'm misremembering or the professor was full of crap. Actual drummers are welcome to blow this explanation to smithereens. I'll second this. I only kind of liked it when I first got it, but weeks later I find I keep returning to it and liking it more. Also, as it happens, I saw him last night here in Portland doing a solo acoustic show, and it was wonderful. He played most of his solo album, and then several from Mojave 3 days as well (and I'm a big fan of M3). Might as well second the Ken Stringfellow--some of us did our part to put him on the LF year-end list. The album I've been wanting to hear but haven't yet found it in any of the record stores I go to is the solo debut from Rosie Thomas. - --Michael ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Apr 2002 13:05:38 -0500 (EST) From: Michael Mitton Subject: Re: [loud-fans] april 23rd alert If we're going to include the Luna release on the 23rd, then we should probably include Damon & Naomi SONG TO THE SIREN. I think most of the songs proper had their own tracks, didn't they? But god - what a stupid idea. Definitely on my list of "extract the good bits to burn my own CD" - since I'm unwilling to wade through it otherwise.
