West Moran's swap CD was titled, "Talking They Told Me to Get Back to My Life So I'm Burning CDs and Drinking Mountain Dew from the Bottle at 3 a.m. Again Blues." For brevity's sake, and with a nod to Fiona, I call the recording, "When the Pawn...". The packaging is minimalist excellence, with the track names creating a symmetric inward spiral. How did you get it to fit so perfectly, West? Onto the contents with saucy commentary in parens. Danny Elfman, "Planet of the Apes (Main Title)" (Elfman sure has come a long way since "I Love Little Girls." Pretty good. Didn't see the movie though.) Minibar, "Holiday from Myself" (Very clean strings and harmonies. I'd love more info on this band. Sounds like they could be a big hit with all Loud Fans.) Travis, "Follow the Light" (I liked Travis before it was cool to like Travis and I still like them now that they're somewhat uncool. Another lovely song by the lads.) The Three O'Clock, "Fall to the Ground" (After introducing my older brother to Game Theory [via "Erica's Word"], he introduced me to this CD. It really holds up very well over time.) Weezer, "Island in the Sun" (This song is one of 2001's best videos... by Spike Jonez, of course) Jimmy Eat World, "If You Don't, Don't" (A great song from a great album by a great band from my current hometown and employer: Mesa, Arizona.) Davy Jones, "You've Got a Habit of Leaving" (Is this the Monkees Davy Jones? Very hip 60s sound -- a nice find!) The Conception Corporation, "Rock and Roll Classroom" (Comic relief) X, "Motel Room in My Bed" (Is this later X? Pretty good song that doesn't sound quite as rough as I remember them.) Idlewild, "Roseability" (Great passive/agressive music; tres emo and name checks Gertrude Stein -- how can you go wrong? More info please.) Sparklehorse, "Piano Fire" (Excellent followup to the previous song. Great vocals.) The Dream Syndicate, "That's What You Always Say" (Good song.) Syd Barrett, "Bob Dylan Blues" (Wow, a Bob Dylan slam. Perhaps the precursor to Soybomb) Tenacious D, "F*ck Her Gently" (Jack Black is a #$@%-ing pottymouth!) Warren Zevon, "Hit Somebody! (The Hockey Song)" (I really like the story behind this song, being a Finn and having several cousins who are farm boys from Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The nearby college, my dad's alma mater, is quite often the NCAA hockey champs. A few years back I met a former NHL "enforcer" who had reformed into quite a gentle guy. He explained his role by saying, "Some guys are good at passing, some at making goals, some at blocking goals. I'm good at hurting all of those guys.") They Might Be Giants, "Hopeless Bleak Despair" (Not great by TMBG standards.) Pete Yorn, "Life on a Chain" (Is this guy as good as he sounds in this song? I first saw him on MTV, said "That guy looks like Scott Miller with black hair!", then figured it was some corporate plot to make me like him. They can't put a decent musician in regular rotation... Can they?) The English Beat, "Rankin Full Stop" (A great reminder of how great these guys were. Thanks!) Glenn Tilbrook, "This Is Where You Ain't" (Pretty good song.) ELO, "Moment in Paradise" (I was surprised to like this one. Despite their periodic excess, they definitely had their moments.) Bob Dylan, "Honest With Me" (There's one fact I can never mention in polite company -- I've never understood the big deal with Dylan. ) Sloan, "Waterfalls" ("Don't go chasin' waterfalls..." Thankfully, this ain't that song. Is this an older tune? I really like it.) And one hidden track!!! (More comic relief of unknown origin) West, thanks for a wonderful and diverse Swap CD with several artists I worthy of more investigation. Thanks also for you patience in my review. It's late-early X, if that makes any sense. It's from their third album, 1982's UNDER THE BIG BLACK SUN. It's always an album that I think is going to be better than it actually is -- I think about the higher-than-high points ("Riding With Mary," "The Hungry Wolf," "Blue Spark") and get all excited, and it's even worse now that the reissue of WILD GIFT has the mighty "Blue Spark" demo. "Yeah! I'll put on UNDER THE BIG BLACK SUN on next, and it'll rock!" Then I listen to the album, and suddenly remember how boring "Come Back To Me," "The Have-Nots," and "Dancing With Tears in My Eyes" are. Jon, if you liked X rougher, the first two albums (the excellent LOS ANGELES and the sublime WILD GIFT) are the ones to have. If you would rather have them smoother, AIN'T LOVE GRAND and SEE HOW WE ARE feature excellent songs and performances, sans the low-fi grit of the first two albums (though I'd think Exene's singing on "My Goodness" and "Anyone Can Fill Your Shoes" would be fire aplenty). The band's last lineup -- Miller, Donnette Thayer, Shelley LaFreniere, Gui Gassuan, and Gil Ray -- is currently rehearsing in Oakland, CA in preparation for the summer tour, which will kick off on June 23 at Konocti Harbor, CA, and wind through 26 other cities, including Denver, CO; Columbus, OH; and Wheeling, WV. "I thought my musical career was over, but the outpouring of love from my fans convinced me otherwise," said Miller, who turns 42 on Thursday, April 4. "I'm not too old to rock -- and neither are my fans!" "This is the line-up that folks really wanted to see," said Ray, who is taking a two-month paid leave of absence from City Hall Records in order to rehearse and go on the tour. "At first, things were a little tense between Scott and Donnette, but they've, uh, decided to let bygones be bygones for the sake of the fans." Robert Toren will be going along on the tour to film it for a forthcoming DVD release on the new 125 Videos label. To celebrate the reunion tour, 125 Records will be releasing remastered versions of the entire Game Theory catalog, complete with extra tracks and new liner notes by Miller fans like Aimee Mann, Stephin Merritt and Peter Buck. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Apr 2002 18:39:32 -0600 From: Miles Goosens Subject: [loud-fans] more 2002 good news http://www.posteverything.com/news/article.php?id=1698 NEW WIRE RELEASE!!! (I'm not trying to start any copyright law debates here.) Somehow this seems a little different from the Napster copyright issues. I don't believe that individual songs can be downloaded from playlists. It sounds like costs could become prohibitive for internet radio stations to broadcast from what the articles say. Maybe public radio stations like WFMU could get a better deal. There are truly amazing programs that are archived on this radio station as Dana posted a few weeks ago and I sure hope that their internet broadcasting and archived programs won't be restricted or worse eliminated because of these possible rulings. I can't begin to name the stuff I've found out about because of WFMU. It's truly pure love for music and not money that keeps that place going. The internet has been such an unregulated medium for awhile which I've enjoyed. I hope things don't start clamping down too hard. Someone on the WFMU message board posted this posted this quote from a person named Raymond Williams who was a cultural historian from England who wrote alot about media. This sums the situation up in my opinion. Raymond Williams--on owning the means of communication Wed Mar 27 20:38:56 2002 209.106.200.71 "Where the means of communication can be personally owned it is the duty of society to guarantee this ownership and to ensure the distribution facilities are adequate, on terms compatible with the original freedom. Where the means of communication cannto be personally owned, because of their expense and size, it is the duty of society to hold these means in trust for the actual contributors, who for all practical purposes will control their use." [on the promise of "interactive" "post-broadcasting"] "one of the major benefits of the new technologies could be a significant improvement of every kind of voluntary association: the fibre of civil society as distinct from both the market and the state. . . . This could be, in practice, the achievement of full social and cultural powers by civil society, as opposed to their appropriation or marginalisation by the corporations of by the state" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Apr 2002 22:22:46 -0500 From: Stuart Bell Subject: Re: [loud-fans] HOT NEWS: Game Theory reunites! The Wire information is no April Fool's at all, and Mr. Matrick's listing of April 24 releases is totally legit. Maybe you'd believe me more if I were to stay up another 90+ minutes and send this message then. But I'm old. Turns out that Gui is living with Donny and they don't have room on the motorcycle(!)(also, Donny said she might be late for soundcheck..)Scott's flying up there, and Shelley can only take her gear (she's added a mellotron!) For what it's worth, it's going straight to my #1 spot when it's released officially -- unless the aforementioned Wire release trumps it in the interim. I don't like it as well as SUMMERTEETH, but I like few things as well as SUMMERTEETH, including the entire GT/LF catalog save for LN and IBC. :-) Like Jer, I didn't think much of it the first time around -- though I would have said "left me indifferent" rather than "didn't like it at all" so maybe our reactions aren't so similar -- but I've been playing it a lot over the last two weeks, and every day a different song from it takes over my brain, which is a very good sign. Today, it's "Radio Cure," and the line(s) "Distance has no way / of making love / understandable." Melissa and I lingered in the car last Friday night with this song playing. Nominally, we were waiting for the rain to let up before dashing towards the apartment, but really, neither of us wanted to leave this song, or each other listening to this song. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Apr 2002 00:04:41 EST From: AWeiss4338@aol.com Subject: Re: [loud-fans] HOT NEWS: Game Theory reunites!
