My topic is "Silly and/or Convoluted 'Workarounds' for Programs that Don't Work Correctly." They can either be software manufacturer-suggested or user-devised. Software manufacturer-suggested would be something like: Microsoft admits to a quirk in Outlook Express that sometimes causes problems with certain attached files. The proposed workaround requires users to avoid starting any attachment with the word "begin." Instead, Microsoft recommends people use "a different word such as 'start' or 'commence'." User-devised would be something like: Putting black-tape over a VCR's time display to get rid of the blinking 12:00 (examples can come from more than just software -- they can involve any kind of gadget). Please email any replies to me at peter.meyers@mindspring.com and feel free to pass this email along to anyone else you think might be able to help. Monday March 18 is my deadline for hearing from people. Many thanks, Peter Meyers ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Anyways, this reminds me of an idea for a movie I had when I was a kid: A re-incarnated Jesus uses his powers to walk on water to win the Olympic diving contest, and his power to turn water into wine to have the best frat party ever. Then, when Friend B points out that Jesus' healing powers could have saved 2000 starving kids in Africa, he replies, "Screw them, they have a 50/50 chance of getting to heaven anyways, which is a higher chance than you have of scoring with Token Hot Girl A at this best frat party ever". Friend B is then bummed out, but comes to realize that you don't need magical powers given to you by God to help others out, just some time and compassion, and that you don't need a Saviour to accomplish things you can do yourself. They have been picking up films that have no distribution deal and presenting them to the renting public. If you can take the guy at his word, their contracts are flexible and aim to benefit both parties. And they're just starting to put some financing into various films. As I understand it, it won't be from the start, but providing money to finish independent films that are running short of cash. Distribution by Blockbuster might not be a filmmaker's ideal situation, but it seems better than having a bunch of debt and no deal at all. >> They do all kinds of films, but his favorite to this point is one >> called The Boondock Saints. > > I saw this one. Blockbuster is distributing their pick-ups to other rental companies. Hollywood Video was named, and I got the impression that the films are available to all comers. I'm not an advocate for Blockbuster. It's been several years since I rented a film. I just thought Blockbuster's actions were of passing interest. An advance team showed up at the American embassy in the Hague to check out the digs, saw cats in residence, and got nervous. They were worried there might be a calico cat. No, they were told, no calicos. Visible relief. Their boss, they explained, believes calico cats are signs of the devil. - Andrew Tobias, 11/20/01 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Mar 2002 01:16:39 -0600 (CST) From: Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Hey baby, wanna be a star? Y'know, it's really an indictment of the general level of sheer stupidity in this country that not only would a thing like this be familiar to everyone, but the whole "I can't set the time on my VCR" bit's become a cliched joke. I mean, forchrissakes...anyone who can read can set the time on their VCR. But there, I seem to have found the problem. - --Jeff J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society www.uwm.edu/~jenor/ADS.html ::This is America. Yes, respect for me is sweeping the culture, and by this time next year freeloading will be in such disrepute that even KMarts will be be too embarrassed to hold "sales" and the Christmas Tree Shops will be out of business for good. But really, buying my own CDs is just self-defense. I run a hopelessly obscure web site with no advertising and no links and no industry influence, and even so I get a steady parade of emails like this: "Dear Twasfeedback! This is letter from good time Russian progressive band Romislokus. We have recorded second album, it names 'Vinyl Spring, Digital Autumn'. How can we send to you it for publish review and exchange link?" If I didn't turn them down I'd never be free of them. glenn ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Mar 2002 01:37:21 -0600 (CST) From: Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey Subject: RE: [loud-fans] veggie burgers On Thu, 21 Mar 2002, glenn mcdonald wrote: > > Also, with each passing day, I am developing more respect for glenn. > > Why? If glenn's "hopelessly obscure," they'll have to invent a new word for sites like _Milk_ magazines (not to mention my own self-indulgent thing) - I mean, we've never been written up in national music magazines (oh wait - AP did a blurt on _Milk_ about 3-4 years back). But yes, even *I* get those e-mails..."please review my CD..." at the lucky-to-be-read-in-the-low-three-digits ADS (URL in .sig blah-blah-blah). That said, while it's certainly likely that many folks writing in to every record company they can find *are* freeloaders, it's also true that, in any given local scene, assmonkeyreviews.com might just be that scene's main link. For example: Josh at _Milk_ also promotes shows in town: he's pretty much single-handedly responsible for at least half the decent shows that have been here the last few years (Eric Uecke at Cactus Club claims the other half). And those bands pretty much reflect his taste (also reflected in _Milk_ to a degree), and for a while, the local scene suchasitwas also displayed a strong influence along those lines. That's pretty much how scenes happen...but then, I doubt many people outside of Milwaukee would know that. (Although when _Milk_ folded its print edition 3-4 years back, and briefly was gone completely ("briefly" then...I dunno what's up right now), suddenly a zillion publicists and bandmembers were writing me saying, "hey - what happened?" Of course, whether any of that resulted in increased sales for Record X as a result of assmonkeyreviews.com's efforts is another question - and the one that Sue and Joe would want to know the answer to. - --Jeff, seeing if "assmonkeyreviews.com" is available.
