My favorite concert lineup was Norm Nardini and the Tigers, The Silencers (the Pittsburgh group), with Donnie Iris headlining. He put on a great show. His first CD (with Ah Leah) is pretty good, although for some reason later vinyl releases and all CD releases had the sides switched. Originally Ah Leah opened side 2. It always seemed like a strange switch to make since the last song on the original album ties together some bits from some of the previous songs. It doesn't make as much sense to do that in the middle of the album. He had some good Dave Clark covers on his fourth album, but I'm sure that was never released on CD. In the early 70's he had a big hit with the Jaggerz with "The Rapper". I don't think he really looks all Elvis Costello. I think he was going more for the Buddy Holly look. I don't know who Corey Hart is, but I don't think he plays all Corey Hart. There's a flashback to a bunch of names that had completely migrated to my subconscious! As a former Pittsburgher, I feel that I should know more about Iris than I do. Of course, I was never very good at being a Pittsburgher in any other way either. I do have vague recollections of the album that "Leah" came from, and I don't recall finding that song wildly out of place among the others. This would sort of make sense to me, since the CDs that I found were apparently made in Italy (though they sell for non-import prices). I think it's worth stressing again that the packaging on them is *really* nice, and they basically look just like records that have been run through a shrink ray. Another interesting thing was to discover how much I disagree with the reviews in allmusic. I guess it's to be expected that jazz critics would find different things to like, but I'm utterly unable to undestand, for example, what they find so awful about his voice. I'd be happier if he sang more, not less. And while they seem to go all apeshit over the soloing, I find that the real strengths are everything else: the songwriting, the singing, the restrained (i.e. basic) rhythm section... And the allmusic reviewer really hates the album that I like best so far. Oh well. At least we agree that he's pretty great. Nice to be able to add a jazz person to my very short list of "jazz people who's albums I'd actually go out of my way to buy" which is so short that I'll reproduce it here: Annette Peacock, my new friend Larry, Karen Mantler, and that's it. Yikes. I guess it's good to leave areas to be explored down the road. - --dana ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO!
