[John F Butland ] Re: [loud-fans] Now It's Overhead (ns) [Aaron Mandel Subject: [loud-fans] DVDs are cool... ... or at least I think so. The Lovely Beth gave me a DVD player for Xmas and I've been having a ball with it. I'm far from the biggest movie fan on the list, but I've decided that the main reason that we don't see more movies is the hassle of bundling up, standing in line, and having to listen to some bonehead talk through the movie, which is probably not even in focus. When you factor in the price, buying a DVD at $20 or under is probably cheaper than going to the theater, not to mention more convenient. The picture is sharper, the sound is better, the snacks are fresher, and the company is smarter. And I can learn more thanks to all the bells and whistles and play it as many times as I want. I've been snapping up all sorts of strange music and concert DVDs - BB King in Africa 1974, Miles Davis Montreal Jazz Fest, Muddy Waters, George Clinton, Curtis Mayfield, etc. I can't honestly believe that much of it will stay in print very long - I was amazed that something like Little Feat from German TV 1977 with Lowell George even made it into print. And that U2 Boston set would have made my top ten if it had been an audio release. I'm convinced that DVDs are the major (but not only) cause of the drop in CD sales. I know that I'm buying more DVDs than CDs and it'd be that way even if I didn't manage to snag a bunch of stuff through my weaselry. Upcoming things like special editions of The Usual Suspects, Bull Durham, The Last Waltz , and so on have me more excited than any music release that I can think of. I wonder if there's any connection with the fact that the major media companies release both and can't appear to be competing with themselves, so need a boogeyman like Napster to blame for all of the drop. Nah, that'd be just to convenient. Ok, I'm done babbling. best, jfb John F Butland O- butland@nbnet.nb.ca ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Mar 2002 21:15:25 -0500 (EST) From: Aaron Mandel Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Now It's Overhead (ns) On Tue, 12 Mar 2002, Dana L Paoli wrote: > appears to be by a band called "Now It's Overhead," and it appears to > have come out in '01 on the Saddle Creek label, which I've never heard > of. Cuz you don't read my posts! Saddle Creek is the home of Bright Eyes and The Faint, as well as a number of other post-emo bands. Their releases are good with shocking consistency, particularly considering the relative variety of styles (The Faint are poppy electro new wave; Now It's Overhead and Son Ambulance are sort of elaborate E6-y stuff; Bright Eyes and Cursive howl and vent in conventionally emo ways). Anyway, I agree that the NIO album is very good. A few songs reminded me of REM circa Fables Of The Reconstruction, so it's interesting that Dana heard specifically REM but a diffferent era. a ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Mar 2002 19:49:42 -0800 (PST) From: Gil Ray Subject: [loud-fans] 'mo rumblins'(that'd be a cool stage name!) 1. things have been so heated on the Loudlist lately, Little Tommy Ridge just issued an ORANGE alert. Hopes to revise it to a YELLOW alert tomorrow.Hope the color blind public and gov't agents can cope with this neat new warning system! 2. I really enjoyed the Big Star show a while ago. It was very cool to see Alex actually play those guitar parts. I also loved seeing Imperial Teen. I thought they were extra cool and sounded great, but I don't feel the need to ever buy their records. They were so....San Francisco. Mixed gender, mixed sexuality, mixed hair, you name it, they mixed it! (this got me to wondering about my love of mixed gender bands. Of the 12 or so bands I have ever been in, 6 1/2 of them have been mixed. The 1/2 band is the version of Game Theory with Scott, Joe Becker, me and Michael Quercio ; ) 3.Saw Anton Barbeau the other night and he was great. He complained of lack of rehearsal, but that didn't bother me at all. They did a wonderful version of Like A Rolling Stone. And Bradley did a couple numbers with them! 4.Go Tonya. 5.Go Osbournes See ya! Gil Try FREE Yahoo! I think Saddle Creek put out the Spoon single after Spoon lost their major-label contract. - Dan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Mar 2002 23:22:32 -0600 (CST) From: Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey Subject: [loud-fans] my new addiction www.televisionwithoutpity.com Nothin' to do with politics, religion, or goat porn. - --Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society www.uwm.edu/~jenor/ADS.html ::The more you drive, the less intelligent you are:: __Miller, in REPO MAN__ ps: Boy that Gil Ray shore is a cutie-pie, eh? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Mar 2002 00:30:07 -0500 From: Dan Sallitt Subject: Re: [loud-fans] 'mo rumblins'(that'd be a cool stage name!) > 2. When I started attending Alex's shows back in 1985 or so, I was surprised to find out what an excellent guitarist he is. It's not the first thing you think about him, maybe coz he got famous as a vocalist sans instrument. - Dan ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V2 #100 *******************************
