And mirroring doug's comment, whenever I hear her voice come in on a song I have a tendency to drift to that one as my focus even if it's justing backing. The subject line's just referring to the new Clinic album. Get it!! Ah, remember back in '96 when we used to laugh and laugh. Those were the days!! Meanwhile, though, the new Clinic album "Shall I Walk With Thee" is out, and is probably worth mentioning. When last we heard from them, the Clinic were the hot band hyped by Radiohead, stealing left and right from the Velvet Underground, Modern Lovers, Suicide and the Violent Femmes. John Peel loved 'em, they wowed the WFMU crowd, and even JR Taylor gave them the thumbs up, saying "they might even suck more than the Clientele," or something to that effect. Strong praise indeed from all quarters. So, it's with heavy heart that I report that the new CD is really good. Warmer production with better bass makes it much easier to listen to, the songwriting is strong as ever, the cryptic lyrics are yelped yelpfully, and it still sounds like no one else. Missing, though, is the thrill of watching a band turn basic elements into something new. A lot of the songs sound like the band is ripping themselves off, which isn't nearly as interesting as ripping off other people. And the higher production takes away some of the trebly urgency of the more upbeat songs. Never bought anything by the band and have a low tolerance for lo/mid fi artsy-rock? Then this album is a great place to start. Otherwise, I say wait for the domestic release of their self-titled singles comp, due out later this month, which still sounds great after months and months and months of fairly regular play around these parts. Unrelated to this in any way, I found an album today that might appeal to people who are diggin the Shuggie Otis thing. I usually avoid the jazz section at Holy Cow, 'cause I don't know enough to make it worth looking there, but when I see a '60's looking album with a naked family of four standing in a field on the cover, I know enough to give it a listen in-store. No idea if it's on CD (though my understanding is that he's well known, so it probably is) but the album called "Coryell" by Larry Coryell with the aforementioned cover, released in '69 on Vanguard Apostolic could be up a Shuggie-fan's alley, assuming they like the guitar solo parts of Inspiration Information. I have to admit that my favorite song is the opener "Sex" which I swear reminds me of a nice Krautrock tune in some ways, between the effect laden guitar spazzing, the distorted vocal shouts, and the repetitive bass and drums. After that, things calm down, but the album basically hits a nice spot between rock and jazz, without ever implying fusion in any way. Not a must-buy, but definitely worth mentioning. - --dana ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Joe should think about becoming a Unitarian. - - Steve __________ Shortly after becoming Attorney General, John Ashcroft was headed abroad. An advance team showed up at the American embassy in the Hague to check out the digs, saw cats in residence, and got nervous. They were worried there might be a calico cat. Of course, Tobias has to have a good imagination. As the Treasurer of the Democratic National Committee, he even had to go along with the notion of wealthy Buddhist monks. I seem to recall that while in library school, we were told/advised that libraries that wished to keep their patrons' circulation records private simply set their system to dump them immediately after return, leaving no record at all. I was thinking that *this practice frees up space on the system, officer.* This was, of course, well before 9/11 and the Priapism... er... Patriot Act. Is anyone else just pissed off at the embarrassing extent to which PR dictates politics - such that bills are given bone-numbingly stupid names like this one? I mean, the folks who write in to "Savage Love" with cringeworthy acronymns that spell CUMSHOTS are less tedious than this. Didn't they used to give military actions and so on names that were random and meaningless? Here's a sampling: I lied. Just change every reference to "Saudi Arabia" to "United States," every reference to "Islam" to "Christianity," and you'll have direct quotes from Pat Buchanan's book - currently a best-seller right here in the USA. What's worse is, people are nodding their heads and politely listening to him on talk shows and the like, as if he's not snake-droolingly insane. Just how far left would one have to go to go as far right as this? I think we need to resurrect Chairman Mao to have some balance in the talkpits. > > "And as the millions pour into Arabia, they will bring their infidel > culture, traditions, loyalties, and faith, and create replicas of their > homelands in the heartland of Islam....Will they [be] indigestible parts > in what was once the base camp of Islam?" > > And more chilling: "If our nation expects a long life, it had best > recapture the fighting faith of its youth.... Of course, Tobias has to have a good imagination. Tobias - I've written for a variety of magazines over the last 30 years, including a column in TIME for several years, and have some appreciation of the need not to publish allegations as true unless I've checked them out. I got this odd story from someone who was definitely in a position to know and then confirmed it with someone else, also in a position to know. That said, it's certainly possible that Ashcroft doesn't actually believe calico cats are signs of the devil, even though his aides said he does. And its possible that his aides were kidding, or overly sensitive, when they discussed covering the naked statue. http://www.snopes2.com/critters/gnus/calico.htm > As the Treasurer of the Democratic National Committee, he even had to > go along > with the notion of wealthy Buddhist monks. The great thing about Buddhists in the U.S. is that they're not so inclined to try to use the power of the state to force other people to act the way they do. I'm not particularly conversant with Buddhism, but they would have to work pretty hard to do something more bizarre than speaking in tongues. But to be fair to Ashcroft, I've read that he doesn't flop on the floor and shout gibberish. His Pentecostalsim is of a more refined variety - from the description I read it sounds like everybody sits around and talks like Frasier. Speaking of music, it looks like the new 6 CD set from the self-proclaimed "world's laziest Buddhist" will finally be released real soon now, and he already has a 2 CD follow-up ready to go. http://www.billnelson.com/discography/noisecandy.htm http://www.billnelson.com/diary.htm - - Steve __________ Our previous president studied at Oxford. This one was given a sightseeing tour of London and said it was ''diverse and clean.'' The Times also said Bush gave a ''pep talk'' to children about the advantages of reading over television. The children did not ask him to name the last book he had read. Just good manners, I guess. - Roger Ebert ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V2 #93 ******************************
