(swap rev 2) Okay, here's the rest of the tape Brian Block sent me, called _The Following Program Contains Some Material_: The Refreshments "Down Together": Incidentally, has this band ever covered "Let's All Go to the Lobby"? They really should... Anycow, this is a kind of happier, wittier Gin Blossoms - that is to say, semi-catchy but inoffensive, and ultimately kind of forgettable. Casey Scott "The Paradise Lost and Found": Brian (or someone) sent me a tape with this track on it before - and while it has its strengths (sometimes clever lyric, a headlong rhythm, and an effective quiet break), it's way too freakin' long, and Scott's voice gets positively screechy in places. Those factors make this one pall with repeated listening rather than improve. The Dismemberment Plan "Memory Machine": First let me note that this band is touring with Death Cab for Cutie...in the immortally named "Death and Dismemberment Tour." This is one of their songs with rhythms as tricky and quicksilver as those of any prog band - but it's also very catchy, melodic, and is not 25 minutes long. The chords in the chorus remind me of Rush circa _Subdivisions_ (and hey - that very song shows up in a few minutes). An excellent, energetic, catchy, and creative track from a band I think a lot of us here would like. Fake Brain "Did You Calculate?" This one's all asthmatic organ and choppy guitar, with some clever lyrics - something about the chorus reminds me of (of all people) Nothing Painted Blue. Not as good as that...but a decent track nonetheless. Rush "Subdivisions": The synth patches are a bit dated, and the 7/8 rhythm at the beginning seems less integral than showy and gestural - but the song's solid, and the Peart/Weinrib/Zivojinovich trio possesses the chops to make the nifty little instrumental flourishes effective. And what about the voice of Geddy Lee? Thankfully, it doesn't get so high here. The floating synth line in the middle section is particularly nice. Oh! I just heard applause - apparently, this is a live version. What I said about chops... Crack the Sky "All the Things We Do": I was sitting on the couch reading when this one started - a '70s hard-rock feel, with synth touches evoking a bit of a progginess - and then i got up to get something to drink from the kitchen, and when I came back, I thought the next song was on. It wasn't; the band had just radically shifted gears into a bouncy beat sorta like that ELO's "Mr. Blue Sky," accompanied by those harmonized, cutting lead guitars that I associate primarily with Queen. I'm not sure of this one...there's a solidness to the melodies that helps stitch the parts together, but I'm not sold completely. Sissy Bar "Gin 'n' Juice": Snoop Doggy Dogg reconceived as new-wavey indie rock - the chorus works quite well, but the verses' vapidity is all too apparent - enough so that I'm not sure whether this is a pisstake or just that the lyrics are beyond parody. I like it anyway. Alice Cooper "We're All Clones": It's hard to imagine - but there was a time when aging rockers, attempting to render their images more contemporary and less antediluvian, looked for inspiration to the works of...Gary Numan. Maybe they were onto something, actually. This is pretty damned catchy, and somehow is compatible with ol' Vince's pre-existing image... The Refreshments "Banditos": This was a pretty large MTV hit back in, oh, 1995 or so - and indeed it's pretty damned catchy, even if one suspects the band of spending a whole lot of time studying those couple of Cracker songs that hit big. I like the line about Jean Luc Picard... Primitives "All the Way Down": Which "Primitives" is this? The agitated guitar and steady Velvets-y beat, and something about the production, sound almost early '80s...and so I'm thikning maybe NZ - but it's maybe too muddy for that era, and the organ solo sounds pretty vintage - enough so that this could be considerably older. Wait a minute...I just remembered something...Nah Curlew "Paint Me": No, not the Posies' song - this one features a repetitive, minimalist guitar pattern, low-pitched, quiet percussion, and a repeated, harmonized vocal line: "I'm a dog playing cards." Ah - so it's about Jesse Helms' taste in art? Both hypnotic and goofy - damned avant-gardists. Well, that's it - as diverse and intriguing a tape as I might have expected from Brian. - --Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society www.uwm.edu/~jenor/ADS.html ::"Shut up, you truculent lout, and let the cute little pixie sing!":: ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Jan 2002 01:30:25 -0700 From: Stewart Mason Subject: Re: [loud-fans] just how much sexiness can that frog tolerate? Wait a minute...I just >remembered something...Nah This is the Primitives from Coventry who had the enormous 1988 hit single "Crash." This is from their second album, PURE, which I love nearly as much as the first, LOVELY, which I think is one of the all-time great albums. What might be puzzling you is that it's one of the handful of songs sung by the songwriter, Paul Court, instead of the euphoniously-named lead singer Tracy Tracy. Beginning sometime last year, Gira started receiving a series of arcane CD-Rs from the Italian collective / hermetic cult that simply labeled themselves as Larsen. The music within was a diverse collection of sounds that in Gira's words included "a whispered song, accompanied by a distant accordion, as if playing in the next room, or a drone of unknown origin, or a short burst of percussive chaos - sometimes just a single sound or noise, a scraping sound, as if someone were slowly etching a piece of rusted metal with a blade of some sort, or the sound of saliva working in the mouth." The last package that he received did not include a CD-R, but a handsome amount of money, a plane ticket to Italy, and a request for his presence to produce an album for Larsen. Intrigued by the music he had heard up until then, Gira took Larsen up on their offer. Once in Italy, Gira was never allowed to see the band who had situated themselves in the recording studio behind a screen. He described their actions as often emerging as if part of some ceremonial rite, but the liturgical music for these rites have all of the trappings of a band who are far more interested in Sonic Youth than the archetypes of ceremonial musics. Hypnotic, interlocking math rock grooves pulse from forceful minor-key guitar chords, counterpointed with accordians, trumpet blurts, mechanical tape whirrings, tectonic rumbles, and other incredibly rich textural elements. The resulting album is a stunning collection of tense musical constructions that have been gilded with a fragile sadness, recalling the likes of recent Unwound, Blonde Redhead, Ulan Bator (another exceptional band produced by Michael Gira), and bits of This Heat and fellow weirdo Italians the Starfuckers. The one qualm with the album is on how the record ends. It has been a longstanding belief of mine that Sonic Youth's "Daydream Nation" should have ended with the graceful haze of "Hyperstation" and done away with the unnecessary exclamation of "Eliminator, Jr." Similarly, Larsen ends "Rever" badly, as a beautifully repetitive groove simply cuts out, making you wonder if California is returning to the days of rolling blackouts. If only every record had one thing wrong with it instead of eighty-eleven problems, and in spite of that one misgiving, this is one of the best records we have heard in quite a while.
