So FedEx that ol' trophy thisaway, Andy DOVER, Delaware (AP) -- Several flesh-eating pet lizards were found feasting on the corpse of their owner in his apartment, police said. Police were called to Ronald Huff's apartment in Newark, Delaware, on Wednesday after a relative became worried because Huff failed to show up for work, investigators said. Officers found Huff's body on the floor, with his pet Nile monitor lizards feeding on his flesh. The state medical examiner is investigating the cause of death. Huff, 42, had last been seen Sunday, New Castle County police said. Workers with the Delaware Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals recovered seven lizards, the largest measuring 6 feet long and weighing 25 pounds. "They're alive and well," said SPCA director John Caldwell. He added that one of the reptiles recovered was acting aggressively, "actually going toward you, mouth open." Caldwell said the lizards have small but very sharp teeth and muscular, whip-like tails that can seriously injure a person. In the wild, they eat eggs, birds and other animals, he said. "In captivity, we feed them raw chicken and liver. You can also feed them hard-boiled eggs," he said. The SPCA will try to place the lizards with zoos or educational groups, Caldwell said. Barring that, they will be euthanized. The lizards are considered exotic pets in Delaware and cannot be acquired without a permit from the state Department of Agriculture. State veterinarian Dr. H.W. Towers said the department stopped issuing such permits for New Castle County residents in 1997 after the county passed an ordinance to stop the proliferation of exotic pets. Caldwell said he was told that Huff was granted an exotic pet permit several years ago. Towers said he didn't know, however, if Huff had permits for all the lizards. "If somebody had come for seven monitor lizards, somebody would have said something to me," Towers said. I didn't think I'd live to see that. What a nice, old fashioned horror movie, with a plot twist to boot. Glad that it was still playing. Also, I found a CD copy of World of Skin's "Ten Songs For Another World" which is possibly the best (or at least the most pleasant) album with Michael Gira's name on it. If anyone wants my pretty gold vinyl copy, email off list. - --dana ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! I thought it was so well done and I'm very surprised and glad that a movie like this has had such box office success. What I noticed was how well it was visually edited. How unexpressed thoughts by the characters were so clearly suggested visually. When I see a movie that lingers a little too long on a subject I wonder what was the director trying to convey in that --like just focusing on someones face or a scene or what ever too long . I feel like I'm supposed to be moved and it's a pet peeve of mine. I didn't feel this happened in this movie. What I mean by that is if it did happen it worked and I didn't feel that it was obvious. This was a very sad and serious movie but I didn't feel there were too many tricks or elements of it designed just for mass appeal. I checked the annotated lyric page, http://www.eecs.harvard.edu/~aaron/scannot/alolita.html and none were mentioned there. So, whether valid or just my imagination, here they are: "Cozify with the lip-tied mind" The subconscious mind, a key idea in 20th-century Modernist thought, can't express itself verbally. It's lip-tied (tongue-tied) in other words. "Lip-tied" is a pun on "riptide", a powerful and dangerous underwater current. By metaphor, subconscious mental processes are under the water's surface. "Death By Water" is the title of the fourth of five parts of T.S. Eliot's poem, "The Waste Land". This part concerns Phlebas, a drowned Phoenician sailor: A current under sea, Picked his bones in whispers. [...] O you who turn the wheel and look to windward, Consider Phlebas, who was once handsome and tall as you. "The Waist and" is very similar to "The Waste Land". "Riptide" was also an instrumental surf song by The Chevells, from roughly the same time period as "Hang on Sloopy" and "Sloop John B" mentioned later in the song. "Beckmanns by the enlistment line" Max Beckmann (1884-1950) was a prominent German Expressionist painter, contemporary with artists like Ernst, Dali, and de Chirico, who are named-checked in "Chardonnay". Beckmann served in the German army field hospital corps in World War I. He wrote much about his wartime experiences, which both stimulated and horrified him, and which strongly influenced his subsequent art. The lines: Going to get folded into threes Until you bend at the waist and the knees seem like a more fatalistic version of: And he's got nerve Asking this Lolita nation to bow and serve in "We Love You Carol And Alison". The bridge of "The Waist and the Knees", beginning with "Agreement made today with the undersigned", is obviously a parody of the legal language found in a recording contract. The image of kneeling down also suggests folding a legal document to fit in an envelope. When I see a movie that lingers a little too > long on a subject I wonder what was the director trying to convey > in that Conversely, I thought the editing in _In the Bedroom_ was extremely manipulative and awkward, and I repeatedly felt like they were doggedly holding onto an empty scene hoping I'd eventually conceed it was profound out of sheer exhaustion. The fade-outs especially bothered me. Actually, most of it bothered me. I basically thought the acting was great, the writing was decent, and every other aspect of it was dreadful, like somebody had read a book about Independent Filmmaking and tried to follow the "rules" without having any artistic instinct to guide them or give the exercise a point. But then, I also hated _Affliction_, which seemed very similar to me, and many people thought that was tremendous, so if you're among them I think there's an excellent chance you'll totally disagree with me again. glenn ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V2 #27 ******************************
