(I'll never get over my L.A. cousins snickering behind their hands at our deplorable fashion faux-pas of wearing bell-bottoms long after they were deemed passe. Mortifying.) Born: The same day and one year earlier than Kevin Bacon Job: Working as a Web producer for "the software giant," but on fun and fascinating education-oriented content [http://www.encarta.com] rather than You Will Be Assimilated software products. Therefore, I Am Not Evil. Got that? Married: Yes, and blissfully happily, to the perpetually delightful and profoundly wonderful JDC Facial hair: More than I'd prefer, but at least it's light blonde and thus inoffensive to others ... (of course please let me know if I'm mistaken about this--then again, you don't have to look if you don't like it) Vision: Weirdo monovision (nearsighted in one eye, farsighted in the other) that has actually improved with age; adequately corrected with disposable contacts. Met Janet: Yes, and a pleasure it was! This was at a 1998 pre-Loud show Thai dinner with a host of other Loudfans, including Roger Winston, dmw, ana, Sarah Gorden, Bradley, Lori and Stefan, SteveH, Sue and Joe, and a couple of mysterious guys who never introduced themselves. (Who were those guys??) How I Became a Loud-fan: Saw the Loud Family open for Aimee Mann in 1996 (Dawn's last show, apparently); Aimee called Scott back for a duet of Inverness. I was mesmerized and decidedly hooked; ran out and bought Interbabe Concern and PABARAT shortly after and then backtracked into Game Theory stuff. Why I Read This List Every Day but Continue to Lurk: I often log onto my home mail from work and read the list but am unable to and don't have time to post--although plenty of topics get me riled up enough to, for sure. (One of the great mysteries of this list for me is how some of you can respond so often and still manage to get enough work done to stay employed!) While I may often scoff, snort, or shake my fist at some of the opinions expressed here, I just as often burst out laughing, or nod and mutter "true, true." What I really value is the vitality and passion here, with or without Scott content. I've really enjoyed reading these intros, and meeting Loudfans over the years. Hope we'll have a good reason to get together again sometime soon. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Jan 2002 16:50:18 -0500 From: David A Seldin Subject: [loud-fans] Late to the Mixer *Name: David Alan Seldin *Location: Boston MA, by way of Ann Arbor, MI and suburban Cleveland OH *Education: University of Michigan, BA and Harvard University, MA both in Cultural Anthropology *Occupation: Director of MIS for the Boston Housing Authority. Cycling, particularly mountain biking, which has obsessed me for the last 6 months, to the point that I crawl out of bed before sunrise on Sunday mornings for the opportunity to ride. Today, for the first time, it was in the snow. Two hours slogging through 4 inches of powder. The woods were pristine, and the ride was difficult, exhausting, and wonderful. *Preferred Technology: The right tool for the job. *Met Janet: Only virtually, but I like her. I'm happy she's lurking around here. *Turned on to GT by: A column in the Tower Records house rag. I bought LN, and that was it. *Most life-altering album: Would it be ROCKET TO RUSSIA, MY AIM IS TRUE, or NEVER MIND THE BULLOCKS? In any event, punk rock was just what this 17-year old needed. *Favorite Scott: LN, without question. Why you all don't feel this way is a mystery to me. *Favorite TV: The Simpsons. *Transportation: An Acura TL, and a Klein Adept Comp *Joined LoudFans: After finding the single-disk version of LN in a Cambridge record store, probably in the middle of 1997? I knew about the LF website, and the webmistress (Sue T.) was the only person I thought capable of explaining what I'd found. She was so helpful I felt obligated to join the list. For a long time I was an active contributor, but my busy life no longer allows this particular indulgence. *First rock concert: I could try to be really hip and say Iggy Pop (with the Ramones opening) in downtown Cleveland in 1977, but it was actually probably James Taylor at Blossom Music Center several years earlier. *Last rock concert: To quote Brett Milano, Mission of fucking Burma, yesterday's all-ages show. Since I last saw them at their farewell all-ages show at the Bradford in '83, there was a certain symmetry. Plus, like I said, I get up early on Sundays... They were superb; Intense, raw, intelligent. The word that came to mind as I watched was 'formidable'. And I loved that their families (including lots of kids) were there to see them; Clint waved to his daughters a few times during the first set... And they played "Heart of Darkness as an encore! *Misc.: Mark Kunkel is one of my best friends in the world. How could I not send him a tape of LN? He is touring solo again, in support of his most recent album Right Between the Promises, and based on the songs he performed, his writing is just as touching, on point and catchy as ever. He was confronting an audience whose attentions were divided, however, and at one point this usually mild-mannered songwriter was cussing out the bar fiends who persisted in talking loudly during his songs. Berbati's is a club venue, but the setting for this show was more cabaret-like, with candlelit tables and hushed conversation, so the loud drinkers were quite out of place. Freedy did what I thought was a strong set for a fairly small audience, and the new material held up very well next to the best songs from his back catalogue. He did a lot of songs from Blue Days, Black Nights, somewhat to my surprise, as it's faded in comparison with This Perfect World and Can You Fly. But the hushed sentiments of that one were well-suited for solo performance, and all told, all the songs basically are strong ones. He did "Radio for Heartache," "Waste Your Time," and "Arriving on a Train" from the new record, along with his cover of the Edison Lighthouse's "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)," which is just great. He also performed "Wichita Lineman," which has been part of his repertoire for ages, and as a surprise Todd Rundgren's "I Saw the Light," performing it sweetly and sincerely. From Perfect World he did some of my favorites, including "Evie's Tears" and "Dolores," but not his biggest hit, "Bad Reputation." He did pull out "Lucky One," the highlight from Can You Fly that Mary Lou Lord performed on her major-label album, and "Tucumcari" from The Trouble Tree. All told, a fine fine set of songs, but I still think (much as I think of Richard Thompson) that he should tour with a band and rock out a bit more. Ken Stringfellow, ex- of the Posies and long-time adjunct member of R.E.M., was the opening act. I didn't recognize any of the songs, since they were all from his solo record, but liked almost everything. He did some synth keyboard stuff that is strongly reminiscent of his contributions to the recent R.E.M. records, and a fair amount of solo guitar. His voice, I think, is the strongest element of his music. He has a fine tenor, marking him as a power-pop rather than a rock vocalist, and he turns phrases charmingly. Most songs were relationship vignettes, without some of the bitterness that tends to pervade Posies records, but almost everything was strong and memorable. After the set, Ken told Michael Mitton and I that he was going to see Scott in SF at the American Music Hall show - did anyone attend? Show report? Scott report? Matic: Oh La La La Starts like "Beyond Belief" and then gets new-wavey in German (?) in a great way. (12) Self: What A Fool Believes Another cover, better but equally pointless (13) The Residents: Act Of Being Polite Wow! Almost hummable! Who knew? The inspiration for TMBG has rarely been more clear. (14) The King: Come As You Are Now this is a good cover - Elvis does Kur(d)t. Wacky, but likeable. (15) Stevie Wonder: Sir Duke Unimpeachable. (16) The Rosenbergs: In Pursuit Run-of-the-mill guitar pop w/ a nifty vocal effect now & then. How many guitar-pop bands are out there? (17) Slim Gaillard: Cement Mixer An old recording of a classic. (18) Sum: Nag Champa Sputtering electronica w/ a sitar. I'm not a big fan of the repetitive beaty stuff... (19) Possum Dixon: Faultlines Delicious music, reminiscent of the Cars. Produced by Ric Ocasek - what a surprise! I know Roger is a big fan of these guys, and I can uderstand why. (20) Tony Burello: There's A New Sound Totally freaky shit, man! Again, drugs??? (21) Wizards Of Ooze: Big Red Balloon (John Weener mix) Neo-psych w/ analog synths - more impressive to those who made it, I'd guess (22) The Swingin' Neckbreakers: The Girl Can't Help It Cramps, call your lawyer...trashy, in a good way! (23) dEUS: Instant Street I thought these guys were all math-rocky & artsy, but this is great mellow pop. (24) Jello Biafra & Mojo Nixon: Will The Fetus Be Aborted? Makes its point, then wears out its welcome. A 3-min. song that should've been 1 minute. He did some synth Just to add here, like (one of the other) Michael(s), I hadn't heard any of his solo stuff before this set. But liking his set, I bought the CD from him after the show, and it's really wonderful. At least of The Posies records I know, it's most reminiscent of DEAR 23. There just seems to be a stronger focus on melody, and the clarity of his voice comes through better than some of the more rockin' Posies records. It's probably featured at a Border's near you, if you want to hear more.... - --Michael ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Jan 2002 06:46:13 From: "Philip Rostonovich" Subject: RE: [loud-fans] ...ever the wallflower... (And since that's the computer with the CD burner, it's also the reason why these'll have to be the so-20th-century tape kinds of swaps.) If Jen and M.D. can get me their addresses, I could probably knock these out in the next couple of days. Actual musical content: um...the first album by the Killjoys, RUBY, which I spent 50 cents on during Hastings' annual purge-the-used-bins clearance, is one of the most delightful things I've heard in years. Female vocals, vibes, acoustic guitars, a little muted trumpet, some piano, that sort of thing. Dana and Carolyn in particular should get behind it.
