First comment, about the venue: Thank heavens for California and its anti-smoking fervor; I'd forgotten how great it is to see a club show without reeking afterward. Bottom of the Hill is cozy, maybe 200+ capacity, and sold out. We were happy to have bought tickets online previously. The Handsome Family (http://www.handsomefamily.com) is a husband-and-wife couple, Brett and Rennie Sparks, who play with a drum machine and synths on stage. Lyrically, Rennie provides an unending series of morosely funny reveries on death and betrayal, including murder ballads in the country vein, most of which are sung by her husband. Brett plays guitar and mostly sings lead, Rennie plays synthesizers and mostly sings backup. The songs are mournful yet somehow affectionate - protagonists usually end up dead or neglected, but they're not lacking in charm. "Weightless," the song of theirs I know best, features the chorus "This is why people OD on pills / and jump off the Golden Gate Bridge," all in an attempt to escape the crushing burdens of gravity. Other songs are litanies of unfortunate demises. It'd all be somewhat tiresome if not for the persistent sense of wry humor that they bring to the material, and their obvious comfort with one another on stage. Willard Grant Conspiracy released one highly-regarded and prominent album on Rykodisc/Slow River, and their subsequent records have been sliding below the public radar screen. Lead singer and songwriter, Robert Fisher, is an alarmingly large yet genial man who bears a striking resemblance to John Goodman, in voice as well as appearance. He was touring with only two other members of the enormous floating ensemble (26 members, he claimed) who play on his records. As one would expect, their sound on stage in no way matched the sprawling tone of the WGC albums. Like the Handsome Family, Fisher sang brooding songs about untimely deaths, including one called "The Ghost of the Girl in the Well," and showed a strong affinity for Appalachian and neo-country balladry. All Music Guide describes the band's overall tone as "Weary, Yearning, Bittersweet, Melancholy, Brooding." The songs were mostly originals, but sounded creaky and ancient and time-weathered. I didn't think the sparse instrumental accompaniment on stage suited the songs well; the pedal steel guitarist on loan from The Court and Spark just seemed off and ill-prepared. Fisher's voice, acoustic guitar and delivery could have been sufficient by itself for a low-key, melancholic show. - -- "Let me ride on the Wall of Death, one more time" Richard and Linda Thompson ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jan 2002 17:14:22 -0600 From: "CJ" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Introduction Name: Christopher J. Andrew Hamlin at the Monkey Pub. I've driven by Chris Prew's restaurant several times in the last week, but I was working, so no eats for me. And though the rumor around town was that ana m. might make it to the Guided by Voices show in Iowa City when I lived there, she failed to materialize and so I still have not met any Loud Fans in person. But I did meet Bob Pollard and Doug Gillard, I think it was. I'd rather meet any of you. The List: Yeah, I'm with Jenny when she says this list might be described as having a bit of a draft. But I don't have a problem with that. I have flesh and blood friends to cover my social needs (and oh god, please don't anyone think that I'm somehow taking a dig at someone- or everyone- when I say that...). As to Lefty's age/weight dilemma re beards: I can relate, sir - I can relate. Age: 24, born 5/18/77 Married: no, girlfriend yes Children: none Pets: None at my apartment--I can barely take care of myself, but at my parent's house I have a cat named Cow that thinks it's a dog. Occupation: implementation planning and billing software development for a cell phone company. The one with wierd commercials. Education: BBA in MIS and BA in Communication Studies, Texas Tech U. soon to be working toward MBA in finance: SMU Hair: brown, slowly retreating from the front of my head. 5'11 140 lbs. Unlike most people in the world, I have trouble gaining weight, not losing it. Beard: No, but I could grow one in 2 days if this list started a mandatory beard policy. Eyes: contacts, 3 month disposables that I've had for 2 years. Met Janet: no, but I do remember her posts. Met other loudfans: I wish, maybe someday Last Concert: Pat Green, Steamboat Springs, CO. fairly cool, he finished with a cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit played as best as a country band can. It was cold. Watching a concert in ski boots is extremely uncomfortable. Favorite Scott record: Plants & Birds. First Heard of Scott: video of Soul Drain on USA late late late at night. Joined Loud Fans before I ever actually owned any more Scott than a crinkly taped recording of that from VCR to stereo. Seen Scott: nope, all of his concerts in my state have been during finals. Guitars: Fender std Telecaster, National Les Paul, Epi '61 reissue SG, pointy Jackson bass Bands: Yes, bass in a band in Lubbock that was pretty terrible, but we knew people who knew people, so we got to open for and drink a bit with quite a few relatively famous bands. Jimbo from the Rev. Horton Heat was the coolest, Butch Vig and the other guy in Garbage were the least cool. There were only about 1200 (like half full) at their show though, so I understand why they weren't in the best mood. Guitar here in Dallas that's a bit better, but we never practice enough to play out. and everyone else is scared to. The lead singer wants to be a rock star more than anyone I have ever met. Neither band plays music that is very LoudFan friendly. They say I play like Radiohead, whatever that means. The only songs I've ever heard by them are the ones from the radio. Why LoudFans: Lotsa reasons. 1. Someone says something every day that makes me fall out of my chair laughing. 2. My friends all have crappy taste in music. The don't understand why I listen to the stuff I do. When I hear The Strokes on radio or MTV, I say "YES!", because they may be a bit derivitive, but they're a darn site better than that "smack my ass" band and Nickelback. Dallas also has no good radio stations; I think it might be the Clear Channel capital of the world. They're also a much better sounding band than those Backstreet Boys guitar solos that would make the members of Poison blush. Without LoudFans, I would have only heard of about 3 new bands this year. 3. The intellectual debates. Even though I always seem to be on the other (losing) side than most of the regulars, I still find them highly enjoyable and informative. Again, I almost always seem to be on the other side, and I say lots of stupid stuff, and I've never felt insulted or bullied, and I hope I've never said anything that really insulted anyone else. 4. Website recommendations. PandoMag, The War Against Silence, The Onion, Dancing About Architecture, Salon, Jim Derogatis just to name a few. Keep them coming. 5. Movie recommendations: I really don't like to watch movies very much, I prefer active entertainment, but I do like to read about them. Something different: Much like dana and stewart I do believe, I don't like to drive very much, mainly because I'm not very good at it, but in order to go to band practice, I have to cross parts of 4 cities and about 30 miles, 5 and 40 if I have to pick up the lead singer or one of the bass players. We had a 10,000 sq ft practice space in Deep Ellum for $300 a month plus electricity after we found that the 20 X 20 spaces in Richardson and Garland were going for $500 a month. We played for a varying collection of homeless folk. They usually booed us, execpt for 1 guy with a hook for a hand that was our biggest fan. I think booing was the sound they were making. All my Loud Family albums and 1 Game Theory album were purchased in different states. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jan 2002 23:28:05 -0500 From: Betsy Lescosky Way Subject: [loud-fans] introductions This is all warm and fuzzy, which is how I like my mailing lists. *Name: Betsy Lescosky Way *Location: Ann Arbor, MI (born in NJ, raised in southwest GA) *Occupation: Graphic designer at ad agency on automotive account (zzzzzzz...) *Would rather be: A real artist *Married: Yes; Doug Way (sometime list member and former Impatients singer/guitarist),two years ago Monday, in Las Vegas at the same chapel as members of Blue Oyster Cult and the Who *Education: BFA in art (painting/photography) *Children: No thank you. *Age: 30 *House: 1914 Craftsman-style Sears mail-order (see www.searsmodernhomes.com) *Vision correction: Is very important to me *Hobbies: Photography (currently Polaroid manipulations of all sorts), collecting mid-century modern design, lurking on loud-fans, creating pixel art with Painter, surfing eBay while appearing to do work *Paper or Plastic: Paper, I like the nice bags with carrying handles best. *Preferred Technology: Macintosh *Met Janet: Yes, in Cleveland *Turned on to GT by: Mix tape from penpal in Maine when I was in high school *Most life-altering album (tie): MBV - Loveless; Pavement - Slanted & Enchanted *Current unobtainable holy grail: Beulah - Handsome Western States (someone help me out here -- please!!) *Favorite current TV show: Six Feet Under *Misc.: I own 14 pairs of Doc Martens in assorted styles and colors. I was told, at an impressionable age, that "Mac" was the original Scottish form, and "Mc" was a contraction common among the Scotch-Irish, thus giving us Americans with Scottish ancestry a way of telling whether our clan tarried in Ireland on the way across the Atlantic. What we were supposed to *do* with this "knowledge", however, I never learned. glenn ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V2 #21 ******************************
