I was ready to write off ORANGE COUNTY with extreme prejudice after the trailer (which seemed to play before EVERY damn movie). But then I heard it was directed by Jake Kasdan, who was responsible for ZERO EFFECT, a favorite movie of mine. Still don't know if I can bring myself to see it though... Just wondering if anyone's gone and seen Orange County yet. I had high hopes when I hadn't seen the trailer and knew nothing about it save that it was Jake Kasdan ("Zero Effect")'s new movie... but now that I _have_ seen the trailer it looks rather awful. I'm hoping it's just one of those trailers that's poorly put together and doesn't reflect the movie at all, and that my initial estimation of Mr. Kasdan's superior character will prove the true one. Any opinions? (the other) Dan ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Jan 2002 18:34:13 -0500 From: Dana L Paoli Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Orange County? Just as a note (I kind of obliquely referred to it earlier) the movie also features a script by "Chuck and Buck's" Mike White, who (unless I'm thinking of the wrong guy) has a small but funny part in the movie. I never saw the (apparently awful) trailer, but the review in the NY Daily News gave it 3 out of 4 stars, and the high powered cast convinced me to give it a shot. The movie features Tom Hanks' son, Sissy Spacek's daughter, Catherine O'Hara, John Lithgow, Jack Black (very funny in the movie), Lily Tomlin, Chevy Chase, etc. In addition, I wasn't previously aware that Jake Kasdan is Lawrence Kasdan's (Big Chill) son. I guess the last name is a clue, but sometimes I miss those subtle hints. Given the high price of movies in NYC, it takes a lot to convince me that a movie was worth going to, and this one, as I mentioned, is on the edge. Money issues aside, though, it's a perfectly diverting and often very funny movie. If you live in an area where movies are a little cheaper than they are near me, it's definitely worth seeing. At least IMHO. BTW, the movie starts out badly, but improves after the opening. - --dana On 12 Jan 2002 18:24:50 +0000 "D. Any opinions? I haven't seen the film yet, but Roger Ebert's review went exactly to this point. He gave it 3 out of 4 stars, but commented that the trailer makes it look like a film that no one over the age of 17 could possibly enjoy, and he begged us to trust him that there was more to the movie than that. From memory, I think it's http://www.suntimes.com/ebert On a different note, Andy opined that this was the best year in movies since he's been going to them. I don't have a long enough history of going to movies to dispute or concurr, but I can say that when I made my top ten list, I was working from a list of about 30 movies that I thought might be there. WIth only one or two exceptions, every movie that showed up on the other people's lists were films that I felt bad about leaving off my list. That suggests that it was a good year indeed. - --Michael ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Jan 2002 18:26:47 -0800 From: "Andrew Hamlin" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Orange County? >I haven't seen the film yet, but Roger Ebert's review went exactly to this >point. Kasdan and Mike White (who left America cringing with bitten nails as writer and co-star of CHUCK AND BUCK) try lampooning Southern California culture, but the unfocused, improbable script overshoots lampooning, and splashdowns squarely into embodiment, of the cognition-in-neutral territory splayed before us. I have nothing against black comedy, but lacking that decisive snap black comedy needs, the horror stories here (a disaster-bound brat ignored equally by his party girl mother and middle-aged powermonger father; an old man kept in narcotic paralysis by the wife leeching his bank account) simply jerk and fester. On top of which, the filmmakers ceaselessly quell any real emotional moments when they shoot musical cues into every pause. How deeply weird that Ebert praises ORANGE COUNTY while he dismissed THE LAST AMERICAN VIRGIN, a roughly-similar film that triumphs by allowing for humanity, as a "Dog Of The Week." Or okay, perhaps that was Siskel, I can't quite remember anymore. Certainly, Ebert's comments over at Slate edge me towards giving him up. Colin Hanks shows potential--he's instantly likeable like his dad, and manages a complex reaction even after a knee in the nuts. But I'm hoping he'll move onward and upward. After all, who's seen MAZES & MONSTERS lately? That was supposed to be "what the?" but I had my fingers misplaced (no, not in an unfortunate chainsaw juggling accident) and I decided I rather liked the Swedish Moose effect that resulted. Uh, anyway, what I *was* going to say is that the All Music Guide, weirdly, links the following when one brings up the first of two metal albums reviewed in glenn's column this week: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=Atwarqjkyojda Hey, for all I know, this is the most "metal" album ever. In other news, our visit to southern California has resulted in our being converted to Iron Chef fans. We were, in fact, drinking quite a bit. - --Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society www.uwm.edu/~jenor/ADS.html ::the sea is the night asleep in the daytime:: __Robert Desnos__ ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V2 #13 ******************************
