I was just reading that Mark Prindle list (thank you Andy, I think, for that link which was posted a while ago -- it's a great procrastination tool) and going through the Alice Donut section. I used to live with someone who worked with the lead singer of Alice Donut, and I once discussed rollerblades with one of their guitar players, but I haven't heard their music in about 11 years. Anyways, so I'm reading along and suddenly the review mentions the song "Lisa's Father" and all I can remember is that, twelve years ago, I really liked this song. I remember that it was some sort of novelty tune, and I think I remember that Lisa's father was a bad man. But, I can't for the life of me remember what the song sounded like, or if it's worth going to the trouble to track down. Anyone on the list been taking their Ginko Biloba and care to help out? - --dana ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! It's atypical Alice Donut: a bass-heavy groove, thick with tom-toms, over which is narrated a story of a little girl whose mother is an alcoholic and whose father sexually abuses her (the neighbor finds out, and he starts abusing her as well). There are also periodic interjections, in a pseudo-operatic voice, of "La forza del des-tiiiiiii-no!" The parents eventually find God and vow to treat the daughter better: the father informs the child "we're not gonna hurt you any more," to which little Lisa responds, in a rather blase tone of voice: "Oh, really?" It's available on the Alternative Tentacles comp. OOPS, WRONG STEREOTYPE!, which also includes some nifty tracks from Nomeansno (come to think of it, "Lisa's Father" sounds like Nomeansno more than AD), Christian Lunch, and a typically excruciating rant by Jello Biafra. More of a Magpie kid myself though (bet that means zip to most on the list!). I read an interview in one of the papers with Sophie and apparently she turned down the support slot on Mr Robbie Williams' tour - Robbie then insulted her by saying she looks like a TV satellite dish - Sophie's got this amazingly beautiful moon-face. (Had some donuts this morning on 45th, but that's another story.) Will always remember the REVENGE FANTASIES OF THE IMPOTENT review, though not the publication in which it ran (Puncture?): "Some bands have talent. Alice Donut has not talent...Do not buy this record." 'Course, a the review says the record has a song about a mentally handicapped kid having sex with a dog, switching halfway through to the dog's point of view, I naturally do what I can to hear that record. I don't remember that song, but I do remember "War Pigs" for trombone and "Come Up With Your Hands Out," which got me in medium-sized trouble one night on KAOS-FM. "Mother Of Christ," from MULE, is my very favorite thing Alice, though. I disturbed a friend of mine by running around screeching "FEELIN'/BUX-OM!!!" And yes the Mark Prindle site fascinates, though I'm frequently left wincing at its tastelessness. Also, that wedding photo, even if faked or joked, is still the most devastating indictment of matrimony to cross my senses in the past few years. Still hoping to lactate sin-free, Andy Two American fans are already [sic] in line to see the next Star Wars film, four and a half months before it opens. Jeff Tweiten and John Guth have pitched their tents outside the Cinerama in Seattle, Washington. Tweiten is aiming to set a new world record for the longest wait for an event. Star Wars 2: Attack Of The Clones opens worldwide on 16 May. He says, "We love Star Wars and I want to create sort of a life art project out of this that can be displayed once this is over with. "Over the course of the next four months we plan on capturing our adventures and experiences on the streets of Seattle with our cameras and journals. What we do with it after it's all done with... ask us then." Tweiten and Guth will have to contend with Seattle's notoriously cold and rainy weather. A storm rolled into Seattle Sunday night and a series of overnight lows within a few degrees of freezing are expected to set in by Friday, according to extended weather forecasts. - --from the Internet Movie Database's "Celebrity News" for January 7th, 2002 ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Jan 2002 15:28:10 -0600 From: "Dennis McGreevy" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Re: loud-fans-digest V2 #8 Andy's remarks regarding: >> 16. Baha Men - Who Let the Dogs Out I almost completely missed the "Who Let The Dogs Out?" phenomenon. But it is singable at Monkey Pub karaoke, and I found it hilarious. Then again I'm the last man in America asking "WAZZUP?!!", <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> I was ignorant enough of this that I had to ask for an explanation during Elektion Khaos '00 when someone in here posted a story about a mob of Cubans chanting "Who Let The Chads Out!" in the streets of Miami. Then one of my store's suppliers, Miller Electric, invited me to their skybox to see a Bulls game (aside: that team is astoundingly bad; I played better than that in high school) last January or thereabouts. After entering, hitting the comp bar, etc., I found out that the half time entertainment was going to be the Baja Men. Incredible, I thought to myself, I'm about to witness a live performance of the premier sports arena chant of our time, in a sports arena. And it sucked. The whole thing except for the main guy's vocals were canned, and no attempt was made to meld the sound of the live mic with the ambient processing on the other lip-synched vocal parts. It wasn't very loud. There was no low end. The only people in the whole crowd who bothered to shout along were two seven year old white boys in the front row, whose parents seemed mildly embarassed by their children's conduct. I was seriously disappointed. (The above personal anecdote is a transparent attempt on your author's part to make list content about ME!, so for those inclined to not want to read such, please go back to the top and delete prior to reading this far.) UK albums, which have sold 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 copies in England. (I also spent a few hours reading Robbie Williams websites, watching Robbie Williams videos, and basically immersing myself in the Robbie Williams experience that had sadly eluded me for so long.) At first I was taken by surprise, as I'd assumed that all his stuff was in the same vein as "Rock DJ" which is very M/Murray Head-y. Nothing on "Ego" sounds like that. But, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that most of the songs on this sound like a mishmash of Blur (Leisure era Blur), Oasis (big time), Pet Shop Boys, a smidge of Elton John (in some of the vocals) and a dash of George Michael, all with a decidedly mainstream slant. It's hard for me to imagine anything from this getting big in America, but hey, what do I know. Shari says that "Angels" was huge a few years ago, though I'm not entirely sure that she's right. Regardless, I think that it's one of the best dramatic, radio-ready power ballads that I've heard lately. What I do know is that one of the songs "No Regrets" has backups from both Neil Tenant and Neil Hannon, and I read that Robbie even had the Divine Comedy open for his tour several years ago. America should be so lucky to have helpful teen idols like that. And some of the lyrics are great: "Early morning when I wake up, I look like Kiss but without the make-up, And that's a good line to take it to the bridge," being my favorite at the moment. After hearing "The Ego..." I'm wondering if he might have more appeal to people on this list than I'd originally thought. I'm not saying he's the new Kevin Tihista, but it's definitely worth spending a few bucks on half.com for a listen. Oh, and Stewart was right about the Fugu album. Check the archives if interested. - --dana ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Juno offers FREE or PREMIUM Internet access for less!
