Marcie is fifteen, very outspoken, (which a lot of co-workers mistake as disrespectful or rude) and will either one day be writing feminist tomes, or setting fire to your local Gap store. A budding activist and intellectual, (political buttons all over her backpack/pocketbook) I don't see her falling into the common local tragedy of being pregnant and living in a trailer with her redneck boyfriend at seventeen. She is a very rare bird in my neck of the woods, and I really admire her passion. We bonded over our mutual love of Todd Solondz films (she takes film criticism in tenth grade...we never had anything cool like that when I was that age...what did we have, "personal typing"?) Anyway, she looks like a groupie of the band Bis before they went techno, and she loves collecting vinyl (indie stuff, or just "old school" vinyl for the sake of the pleasure of the experience of playing it...how sublime) No, I'm not a perv, she's just such a breath of fresh air, though if she had a birthday sometime in the '70s I'd ask her out. Anyway, because she is so special, I gave her a copy of "Big Shot" on vinyl (the mint one I found some months back). She really likes GT, though I don't understand her saying it sounds like "'80s Sonic Youth," but I've been surprised in the past of what those with a limited musical knowledge base/totally different knowledge base tell me what Scott's music sounds like to them. ("Big Shot Chronicles" = "Confusion is Sex"? nah) There really isn't a point to this story, just that if someone young comes along that you'd think would get Scott's or any good musician's music, give them some to listen to, or make them a tape/burn them a CD. As cheesy as it sounds, I think the future of independent music may be in our hands, especially the way the music industry is going, because of the almighty dollar. If it doesn't change, I'm afraid the generation coming up will think that the kaka on the airwaves is good, because they don't know of anything else to think is better. Remember, nothing says "I love you" like a parrot, (a funny bumpersticker I saw recently) Mark ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Jan 2002 10:15:39 -0800 From: Tim_Walters@digidesign.com Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Fwd: Fw: It's the end of the year as we know it >This reminds me why DJs are commonly held to be idiots. The artist of the year was Barry Bonds. Add to the death toll Florian Fricke, leader of German band Popul Vuh, who died December 29 at age 57. PV made lots of wonderful records, but are probably most famous for scoring some of Werner Herzog's films (AGUIRRE and NOSFERATU, probably others). ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Jan 2002 19:08:14 -0000 From: "richblath" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Another 2001 list > On 1/1/02 2:29 AM, richblath wrote: > > > 9. If I may, I'd like to relate a great experience I had there over the weekend. Like many of you, I've got hundreds of CDs. Unlike some of you, I am not adverse to parting ways with less-played ones. The other day, I packed 100 of my old discs into a box in anticipation of venturing up to Amoeba. Realistically, I figured I'd be able to get about $1 a disc, so I wasn't expecting much. Bear in mind that these were the dregs of my collection - CDs I felt I would never want to hear again. Imagine my surprise when the gentleman offered me close to $300 for the box. What's more, he called his partner over as he pulled out three of the CDs. They spoke to me in quiet, even tones as they said "are you sure you want to turn these in?". They recommended - no insisted - that I hold onto my old copy of The Traveling Wilburys first album along with Camper Van's II/III and Tom Wait's Rain Dogs (original cardboard packaging). They said the Wilburys is worth up to $75, the CVB $25 and they couldn't put a price on the Tom Waits. I told them that I was pleasantly surprised that they would suggest I hold onto pieces of my collection when they could have easily purchased them for much less than they were worth. They said that "they don't do that kind of thing". NEWS FLASH: Amoeba cares about their customers!!! Doug S. P.S. - does anyone have an idea how much Rain Dogs in it's original cardboard DigiPak sleeve (in mint condition) is worth? EBay came up empty. Album of 2001: Old 97's - Satellite Rides (w/ bonus disc). Old 97's top my list for the second consecutive year. Song of the year: The New Pornographers - Letter From an Occupant. Or was this really from 2000? In that case, I've got to go with Paula Carino - Venus Records. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Jan 2002 14:51:39 -0500 (EST) From: Aaron Mandel Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Another 2001 list On Tue, 1 Jan 2002, richblath wrote: > As with last year I sort of made up my mind while filling in Aaron's > handy form and then after sending that re-read several other people's > lists of the year and contemplated all the ones that I'd managed to > miss out! His RAINY SEASON album is probably my album of the year, too. Amazing to me that after twenty-five years of more misses than hits it could all come together and he could make something that's almost as good as his first few albums back in the 70s. I suppose if Dylan could make his best album since 1975 this year, so could the world's greatest "new Dylan." _________________________________________________________________ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Jan 2002 16:07:14 -0600 From: "Kunkel, Mark" Subject: [loud-fans] T.Rex? Game Theory? While wasting time at work today, I was reading The All Music Guide's article on T. Rex and noticed that it lists Game Theory among the "followers" of T. Rex. (Also listed: Poison!) I don't get it. I love T. Rex and, of course, Game Theory, but I don't hear any T. Rex in Game Theory. Is anybody willing to argue that T. AMG is totally arbitrary in their connections but I guess I don't see this comparison as that far off. Marc Bolan/T. Rex at least influenced Game Theory indirectly through Bowie, Rundgren, Big Star etc. Also a T. Rex song like Cosmic Dancer could have a lot to do with early to mid Game Theory (see The Red Baron, Regenisraen) If nothing else, T. Rex's The Slider pops up on Scott's 1972 list at number twenty (http://loudfamily.com/scottlist.html). Electric Warrior didn't make the cut in 71 though. Besides I am all for AMG's apparent affinity for Game Theory. It doesn't matter what you are looking at, Game Theory shows up somewhere on the page probably a third of the time. the all miller guide, bjc np a western front _the king is dead_ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Jan 2002 18:14:18 -0500 From: Dana L Paoli Subject: Re: [loud-fans] T.Rex?
