The excitement of doing a retrospective of 2001 made me want to write you all about the year in music. 2001 was a year that won't go down as a rosy one for many of us. The music industry saw things get a lot tighter, as many a label and distributor went down for the count. In a time when all the commercial radio stations in the country are pretty much owned by two companies, I'd say that you can look for even more closings and consolidations for 2002. Here are some of the year's news highlights (compiled largely from CMJ online): Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inducts the Ramones, Talking Heads, Tom Petty, as well as oldies Isaac Hayes, Chet Atkins, Brenda Lee and Gene Pitney for 2002. Rolling Stone names Britney Spears artist of the year; Spin chooses U2. This reminds me why I never read those magazines. Eddie Van Halen announces that he has cancer Beastie Boys announce closure of Grand Royal; Atlantic closes jazz and artist development Division One imprint; Valley Distribution filed for bankruptcy; Warner Bros. shutters London, former home of the Rolling Stones, and Sire, former home of the Talking Heads and the Ramones. Whiskeytown splits after the release of the acclaimed disc (delayed by four years), Pneumonia. However, we are blessed with Ryan Adams' and Caitlin Cary's solo records. Tom Maxwell leaves Squirrel Nut Zippers but releases his own solo record, Samsara; Catatonia splits; Skunk Anansie splits; Sunny Day Real Estate disbands again; Elastica splits; Pizzicato 5 play final show in Japan; Reprise rejects Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot; the two parties agree to split. Mixed by Jim O'Rourke, the album will be released by Nonesuch in spring 2002 Passings: John Phillips of the Mamas And The Papas, 65; John Fahey, 61; Joey Ramone, 49; John Lee Hooker, 83; Chet Atkins, 77; Anthony Berkeley (Too Poetic of Gravediggaz), 35; Aaliyah, 22; Carl Crack of Atari Teenage Riot, 30; Warp Records founder Rob Mitchell, 38; artist who painted Talking Heads, R.E.M. album covers, Howard Finster, 84; George Harrison succumbs to cancer at 58; Michael Karoli of Can, 53; Juan Hinojosa of Tejano band Los Fabulosos Cuatro, 51; Bianca Halstead of Betty Blowtorch, 36; Stuart Adamson of Big Country, 43; Acetone bassist Richie Lee commits suicide. Our station saw it's fair share of loss for the year as well. Armando Bellmas, Dave Gonzales and Marshall Ballew made their exit, as well as station manager Delane Davis. We lost a number of great ARC DJs to the daylight world, as David Herring, Roland Hardy, Robert Hildreth and Randy Walker, among others, made what probably were their final appearances on our airwaves. Robert Hildreth is taking the year off to tour the country: After 20 years in the HVAC biz, I have decided it's time for a break. My girlfriend, after 8 years in the wonderful industry of banking agreed. The plan is to travel the North American continent in an old schoolbus while whitewater and sea kayaking in hopefully Alaska and Mexico. Having missed the opportunity to do the schoolbus thing in the 60's, I thought I'd better do it now before I need the aid of a fat RV. That along with the death of Ken Kesey, who needs a better reason? Of course I will be spreading the word of ARC and WNCW along the way and tuning in via webcast at every opportunity. For pics of how things are going so far, check out www.clubphoto.com and type in laura.neff@ivillage.com at the search. Hopefully the pics will get more intresting as we get on the road. Things are not all gloom and doom, of course. WNCW garnered new talent from Martin Anderson, who stepped into Marshall's slot, and David Gordon, new GM. ARC music director Dave Wall made a splash by revamping the ailing Frank On Friday show. ARC training in the fall was the most successful in recent memory, as more than half the original trainees made it onto the air, making my job of filling the schedule much easier. And then there's the music. In my five hour show, I didn't get close to showcasing everything. Doing the show made me realize just how much good came out of the year. FYI, I put out a box with some discs that stood out this year, but it is just a start. It's like an early, incomplete rough draft of the 'best of' essay that's still eluding me. Some of my picks for the best discs of the year include: Neil Haggerty, B.R.M.C., PJ Harvey, Love As Laughter, Drums & Tuba, Greyboy, David Garza, Euphone, Japancakes, Tortoise, Finley Quaye, Them Wranch, Michael Franti, Poets of Rythm, Fantomas, The Beta Band, Chris Lee, Kingsbury Manx, Beachwood Sparks, My Morning Jacket, Chris Knox. This list is valid only for right now. A different list awaits whomever may ask tomorrow or the next day. I never put together a formal 'top 10' list this year, mainly because it got to be a drag. Simply considering all the discs that I've just unearthed that were neglected this year (e.g. Captain Audio), I don't put faith in having heard enough to definitively say what 10 discs are best. And I listen to a lot of music. I'm in a "top 10 lists are self-important" mood I guess. However, if you are up for it I would suggest the Village Voice method of scoring: Unlike your normal year-end list, the Voice version differs by having contributors assign points to the records in their top ten. You have 100 points to assign to ten records. Unlike a Top 10 where you must decide a specific order, here you can assign two (or more) records the same amount of points indicating that you like them the same. The maximum points you can give any artist is 30 and the minimum is 5. Other notable releases were some reissues: Shuggie Otis' Inspiration Information and The Soft Boys' Underwater Moonlight. Shuggie went from the 'where-is-he-now' file to, well, at least the side stage with Luaka Bop's release of his 1974 classic. No wonder the Stones wanted him to play in their band. Robyn Hitchcock's early genius was brought to light with Matador's reissue of 1980's Underwater Moonlight, throwing in a live disc for good measure. Add to these Faust's BBC Sessions + on Cuneiform/Recommended (a label which specializes in smoking reissues), New Order's 20 Years of New Order and Heavenly's Heavenly Vs. Satan on K, and you have lots of grist for the musical history mill. In 2002, I'd like to see more of all of you. It was a real treat to have free tickets to see Stephen Malkmus in Asheville recently and I'd like to have another 'ARC night out' soon. Many thanks to Kate Barchshat for doing all the legwork in getting the tickets for us. So if you have an idea for an ARC gathering, please let me know. Right now I'm wanting to target a show in Charlotte for us to attend. Also, I'll probably put together an ARC bash at my place in the spring again, but would love to see someone else step up to the hosting plate too. Anybody feel like entertaining? I mean, if I had her money I'd have probably lost a kidney in liposuction surgery long ago. I think I need to change my best of list for 2001. Though nobody cares but me, I just don't feel like it's right. I think that I shouldn't limit myself to records that have only a 2001 copyright. There were some that I didn't get until the new year that I really enjoyed, and shouldn't be left out on a technicality. Also, the ep rule is kind of limiting, as sometimes eps can be as an important part of one's record collection as lps. Here goes: 1. Go-Go's (God bless 'em) 2. Orange Peels "So Far" 3. Andrew Sandoval "A Beautiful Story" 4. Dar Williams "Out There Live" 5. Steve Kilbey "Dabble" 6. The Minders "Golden Street" 7. Of Montreal "Coquelicot Asleep In The Poppies: A Variety of Whimsical Verse" 8. Kings of Convenience "Quiet is the New Loud" 9. Death By Chocolate s/t 10. Belle and Sebastian "I'm Waking Up to Us"/"Jonathan and David" (I can't decide...two eps = one lp, right?) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Jan 2002 22:41:06 -0500 From: Dana L Paoli Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Fwd: Fw: It's the end of the year as we know it Rolling Stone names Britney Spears artist of the year; Spin chooses U2. I was getting a little worried, as both the "Songs for the Jet Set" and "Reverie" series were starting to dip in quality. I do think that I've had enough el graphic to last me the next decade or so, though. - --dana ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Musicians on the list know this type well, I'm sure...love 'em or hate 'em. For more info. on this personality type, see _Please Understand Me_ by David Keirsey and Marilyn Bates. He has the type of personality that either makes you scratch the walls with your fingernails, or you slap him on the back as he gets you another beer from the keg that he pumps in his backyard by the live band playing at one of his parties. (I don't fall into either of these scenarios I suppose...being the "author" type, I thank him for the beer without slapping, then go find a spot on the fringe of the party and watch the band) I posted this because I thought the music news would be interesting to those who didn't know.
