They had a huge three-for-$5 discount rack, and I saw an embarrassingly large number of fine records I paid full price for, but I did pick up six discs for ten bucks, plus a cute 50" fillip ... Buffalo Tom, Big Red Letter Day [now playing...] Then Jerico, First The Sound of Music [ironically, I think I got rid of their second album sometime last year, thus depriving me of their entire recorded output, I think?] The Lightning Seeds, Sense Jill Sobule, Happy Town Self, Subliminal Plastic Motives Kenickie, At the Club The 50" tidbit I saw was a promo sampler for Mike Peters ("It's the guy from The Alarm, flying solo!") with three reworked acoustic Alarm tracks. Among the other records I saw were things I already owned by Split Enz, Forest for the Trees, Professor and Maryann, Garrison Starr, Arson Garden, Matt Keating, Lauren Hoffman, and I can't recall what else. But the discount bins always make me feel compelled to visit the big chain record stores. Don't know the name of the new one, but I've heard a few tracks on the radio and haven't felt compelled to take a sledgehammer to it. Deep Banana Blackout - Funky funky funky. A band who really deserves the big crowds that flock to see them. They have jammed with, among others, John Scofield and Maceo Parker, whose recent albums would also be great gifts for the DMB fan (Sco's "A Go-Go" is especially great). Ani DiFranco - Might depend on the gender & open-mindedness of the listener, but her live 2cd set could be a good one. Bruce Hornsby - Nowadays attracts the same kinds of audience as DMB, but in my opinion can at least write a half decent song. Bela Fleck & the Flecktones - "jazz" for people who are more adventurous than Diana Krall, and less then Eric Dolphy. They are great live, but like DMB tend to overplay *everything*. I would suggest "Flight of the Cosmic Hippo". The Phish bootleg of the White album in its entirety. Dude. You could go the singer/songwriter route and try to turn them on to Freedy or Sarah Harmer, though I would bet that a David Gray or Lucinda Williams might be easier to swallow (though the latter's latest is less so - best stick with "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road"). Or go the "you may or may not like this, but at least you are helping out a deserving band" route and give them a cd by someone who isn't signed yet. I would recommend Stephen Kellogg (www.stephenkellogg.com) - a sweet and talented songwriter who will be big in the near future. Also playing at the House of Blues in Boston next Weds. with yours truly on ze bass. Hope this helps. I'm a big fan of making a mix tape/cd for a gift, which is a little more personal and allows you to sneak in songs that they really *should* like. I can't vouch for his style, as I've never listened to the CD, but the David Gray CD "White Ladder" has a sticker on it quoting Dave Matthews as saying that Gray is one of his favourite musicians. I suppose by implication that they must sound similar. You might give that a go. Hmmm, that's kind of strange, seeing as how they were formed here in Colorado and are still based in Boulder. Looks to me like they have a huge fan base here. They certainly get writ up in the paper a lot. Good to know one of our local bands is so popular up your way, even if I don't particularly care for their music. One of the reasons that Dave (Matthews) has such a glowing endorsement of David (Gray) is that Dave signed David to his own label. Thus, every purchase of a new David record benefits Dave as well. - -------------------------------------- Michael J. David G is your basic singer/songwriter music, and not bad either. Andrea ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V1 #318 *******************************
