My understanding is that Sonic Boom is/will be (?) doing a tour wherein he'll be playing all old Spacemen 3 stuff. I hope that there'll be details on the show.: SPECTRUM Sonic Boom has been the most cosmic-minded traveler in the UK's psychedelic rock scene since the mid 1980's. As a founding member of Spacemen 3, he helped lay the blueprint for legions of analogue-equipment-worshipping drone rockers with his powerful continuation of the ideas set forth by folks like Suicide, the Red Krayola, 13th Floor Elevators and MC5. After the group's demise, Sonic continued his experiments in E.A.R. and Spectrum, who we are honored to be presenting live in studio this afternoon. On Brian Turner's show. Tonight on Politically Incorrect (which I don't watch, but I thought someone might want to know) Harlan Ellison is a guest. Finally, on Thanksgiving evening, Ben Folds will be the musical guest on Late Night With Conan O'brien. - --dana ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! There is a rambling, self indulgent but often wonderful 14 page article on Tris McCall in a zine called Badaboom Gramaphone that I bought at Other Music last night. There are more mentions of Scott Miller than you can count. The writer basically has Elvis Costello, Graham Parker and Scott Miller as his gods, and he gives Scott Miller alot of credit for choosing to produce Tris McCall, whom he gushes about and continually praises as the inferior only to the Loud Family. What a strange read this article is. It comes from a universe in which Scott is given proper credit as the God he is. It also mentions how smart Scott was to incorporate Alison Faith Levy into the Loud Family and quotes the Loud Family more than once. I know the cost of the zine is $7.95 but there are also tons of other articles about people the people here listen to. Anybody familiar with the author, Joe Harrington? Maybe he is on here, the name rings a bell. Nextly, I saw Spoon last night at Maxwell's, and anyone wavering about whether to see them live or not, run out and do it. They put on a rocking show and were clearly gratified by the usually attentive and appreciative Maxwell's crowd. Is there a better place to see live music in this country? Certainly not right around the corner from my house. Anyone who hasn't run out and picked up GIRLS CAN TELL, do so swiftly or the lower reaches of your top ten will have a hole in it. Ben Kweller has been explained as the former lead singer of Radish, who were signed and marketed in the aftermath of Silverchair. Now if someone described him that way to me, I would immediately ugh him out of my mind. However, Shah Shah, his self released record from last year, made my top ten and is excellent. It is produced by Bryce Goggin who is responsible for Spacehog's glam sounds, and features some of the best drumming and bass playing of last year. I believe you can order from his website benkweller.com and he was recently signed by Dave Matthews' ATO records (along with David Gray and Chris Whitley), so he'll be at a record store near you soon as well. If you get a chance to check out Ben live, do so, he is a real talent. Ben Lee fans will really dig this. Lastly, Hefner has made my top ten the past two years, last year with both their B-sides record, BOXING HEFNER and WE LOVE THE CITY. Their new import only for now record, DEAD MEDIA, will definitely make it for me this year. Their best , FIDELITY WARS, still hasn't left my CD Player since 1999, and their first record, 1998's BREAKING GOD'S HEART, is really wonderful as well. All this is to say, that Hefner has become my new favorite band now that the Loud Family are caput, (for now?). Darren Hayman is simply a great great songwriter. Five great records in for years? When is the last time anyone has done that. WE LOVE THE CITY, by the way, may indeed be their weakest record, so I can understand how someone was a bit non plussed by it the first time around. What does Hefner sound like? Well Darren Hayman is a huge Jonathan Richmond fan, his voice sounds a bit like Gordan Gano's, and he is lyrically similar but superior to Jarvis Cocker. My recommendation is to start with FIDELITY WARS. I haven't had trouble getting anyone into it. Maybe if a bunch of you buy some Hefner records, they'll actually tour the US. Okay, that's it for now, I haven't posted in eons so I didn't think anyone would mind. peace, Steven Matrick ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 11:33:27 EST From: DOUDIE@aol.com Subject: [loud-fans] oh yeah.. and Paula Carino And one more thing, I haven't gotten around to buying Paula's new record, mostly out of forgetfulness. The Gorky's Zygotic Mynci record was nice, but not quite there for me. In particular, I think the vocals are kind of colorless. I'll give it an 84. The new Matthew Ryan album, "Concussion", is kind of a disappointment. Now that he's been bumped off the majors, he's cut back on the production and big loud guitars. That's a shame, because the big loud guitars really helped his songs. Nice cover of the Clash's "Somebody Got Murdered". I'll give it a 77. Kevin Salem's new one, "Ecstatic", caught me by surprise; I didn't know that he was still working. I think that his first album, "Soma City" is an absolute masterpiece; it's the best straight-ahead put-4-guys-in-a-room-with-a-batch-of-great-songs, lead-guitar-rhythm-guitar-bass-drums album since the electric side of "Rust Never Sleeps". This one is totally different in feel; the straightforwardness and tension of "Soma City" has been replaced with an eclectic production style that reminds me of Garbage. Not that that's a bad thing, but since really good P4GIARWABOGS, LGRGBD-type albums are so rare these days, I wish he'd made the follow-up to "Soma City" that his second album, "Glimmer", wasn't. I need to listen to it a couple more times to give it time to sink in, but I'll give it a provisional 86. I downloaded the title track from the not-yet-released-in-the-states Super Furry Animals album, "Rings Around The World", and I'll be looking for it once it finally gets released here; the track is that good. I also downloaded some tracks from the Great Lakes and from Beulah, both of whom seem to be worth checking out. Oh, and the Caravan mp3s I downloaded sound good, too. Nothing new there. It focused on Morrissey (Suedehead, a "minor hit", appears on no less than five albums) & The Cure, and the vast amount of compilations they have out. What I found interesting is that the new Cure Greatest Hits CD gets a thumbs-down, even with the inclusion of the acoustic bonus disc. The reviewer said the acoustic versions are not acoustic reinterpretations, that they are just note-for-note re-recordings of the original versions of the songs using all acoustic instruments. If so, I think I'm going to have to take it off my want list. Wish I could provide a link for the article, but it doesn't appear to be reprinted online. BTW, the new Therapy? (SHAMELESS) is a nice return to form after the lackluster SUICIDE PACT-YOU FIRST. If this is the kind of thing you like, then you'll like it. The new New Order (GET READY) isn't doing much for me (aside from a couple of songs), though I do like the crunchier guitars. Are we talking about music yet? Do I get a gold star? (One reason: I don't think the notes were ever written down, and since it would probably be more effort to learn exactly the originally recorded notes than to come up w/new arrangements...) Even if they were, so much of rock depends upon arrangement that even that sole change would radically alter the character of the songs. It also has "She Pays The Rent" by The Lyres and "Prairie Rose" by Roxy Music, among other tracks I recognize. If anyone recognizes this and could e-mail the track listing to me, I'd really appreciate it. Okay, I finally found the article in question: http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/315/living/With_reissues_what_s_old_is_always_new_again+.shtml Here's the bit about GREATEST HITS: - ------------- The new songs, "Cut Here" and "Just Say Yes" are infinitely dull, infinitely skippable. "Limited editions" (that often means "all") of GREATEST HITS include a second disc featuring acoustic versions of all the hits, but even with those the Cure fails to capitalize. Rather than try new, quieter interpretations of its "hits" the band tries to replicate every aspect of the songs acoustically. This comes off as unimaginative and amateurish. Singer Robert Smith's every annoying "doo-doo-doo-doo" and "owwwww!" is magnified. - ------------- Granted, the reviewer (Steve Greenlee) sounds like he doesn't like The Cure much anyway... I dig "disneyland" with the small "d" too, Andy "For the millions in the prison, That wealth has set apart-- For the Christ that has not risen, From the caverns of the heart-- For the innermost decision, That we cannot but obey-- For what's left of our religion, I lift my voice and pray: May the lights in the Land of Plenty Shine on the truth some day." - --from "The Land Of Plenty," lyrics by Leonard Cohen, music by Sharon Robinson; available on Leonard Cohen's latest album TEN NEW SONGS ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 15:18:38 -0600 From: Miles Goosens Subject: Re: [loud-fans] New Church stuff At 06:09 PM 11/20/2001 +0000, richblath wrote: >I got them through Whammo ! www.whammo.com.au >and give the relative weakness of the Aussie $ it's not that expensive. Everything Richard says is true -- at least about Whammo! Whammo looks a bit more professional and less charmingly handmade than Greg's Music World, but I've gotten great ahead-of-schedule service from them, plus quick personal responses when I've had questions (like making sure that You Am I's DRESS ME SLOWLY would be the limited Aus-only edition with the Tim Rogers solo bonus disc). If it's in print in Australia, they'll get it for you. While you're there, pick up a CD by the unheralded-in-the-rest-of-the-world Whitlams, who are described in one of the reviews on their website as "muscular piano-based pop with lyrics of charming cynicism," which is as good a summation as any I've seen. ETERNAL NIGHTCAP is a good place to start. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 16:22:36 -0600 From: Miles Goosens Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Greatest Hits At 12:48 PM 11/20/2001 -0800, Jer wrote: >The GREATEST HITS CD, btw, is the first thing I've >ever purchased by the Cure despite liking them for >about a decade. I had bought THE HEAD ON THE DOOR in '85 but wasn't engaged by it then, and the videos from KISS ME KISS ME KISS ME didn't grab me at the time. Then we moved to Nashville and I kept hearing cool songs on WRVU like "Charlotte Sometimes," "The Hanging Garden," "A Forest," "Primary," and "The Walk," and I was sold. I think the Cure's career is remarkably consistent. The absolute peak for me is probably the 17 SECONDS / FAITH / PORNOGRAPHY sequence, but that shouldn't be taken to imply a dropoff. In fact, DISINTEGRATION (1989) and BLOODFLOWERS (2000) are my #1 albums of their respective years. From esoteric new wave debut (BOYS DON'T CRY/THREE IMAGINARY BOYS) to dark propulsive dirges (1981-82) to cracked pop singles (1983-85) to incredible hodgepodge of all of the above and more (KISS ME KISS ME KISS ME) to elegiac dirges (DISINTEGRATION) to '90s inbetween-styles (WISH, WILD MOOD SWINGS) and back to elegiac dirges (BLOODFLOWERS), I've enjoyed it all. The real questions on the Cure catalog, which may be related to each other, are: (1) Why aren't there CD releases of their enormous and high-quality catalog of b-sides and rarities? The *cassette* of STARING AT THE SEA remains a better buy than the CD because it's got an album's worth of them, then there was THE CARNAGE VISORS, great moody stuff on the FAITH cassette... There's a whole boxed set's worth of them just waiting to be gathered or used as bonus tracks on reissues. (2) Why hasn't the band's catalog been remastered? The CDs of the 1980-85 catalog (i.e., CDs done from album masters in the late '80s) are particularly showing their age, plus they could tack on a ton of b-sides as per item #1... >but I was >surprised to find "Pictures of You" absent. Wasn't it >one of their bigger hits? Or did someone at the radio >station I used to listen to just happen to have a >thing for it? "Lovesong" and "Lullaby" were the ones I remember getting airplay outside of college radio, and they're both on the disc. "Pictures of You" and "Fascination Street" were the other two DISINTEGRATION singles, and they got more airplay than your typical Cure song thanks to the group's relatively high profile at the time (in fact, "Fascination Street," the actual first single from the album, got re-released as a single after "Lovesong" and "Lullaby" got the group mainstream exposure), but I can see why they were pruned for a single-disc career-spanning singles comp. All four of them are on GALORE, the 1987-1997 "hits" collection. If you don't want to plunge right into the group's non-comp albums just yet, putting together STARING AT THE SEA and GALORE gives you a more comprehensive overview. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 18:37:10 -0500 (EST) From: Michael Mitton Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Greatest Hits On Tue, 20 Nov 2001, Miles Goosens wrote: > "Lovesong" and "Lullaby" were the ones I remember getting airplay outside > of college radio, and they're both on the disc. On the album, it's a very long meandering song (7+ minutes), which fits the lyrics, and builds into some wonderful chord changes after the final verse. The radio version, though, was a 3:30 affair, and when a song's success rests on being long and meandering, a 3:30 version isn't a good idea. That said, it was probably left off because 7+ minutes is a long time to dedicate on a single CD Best of. My favorite B-side of the cure, incidentally, is "2 Late" which is on "Love Song" CD single. One of my favorite Cure songs ever, in fact, with one of Smiths snappiest melodies, yet the vocals are mixed way to the back, giving it a strange, searching quality. I've been a Cure fan since I was old enough to buy music, but I never did get into "Bloodflowers." - --Michael ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 18:10:27 -0600 (CST) From: Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Greatest Hits On Tue, 20 Nov 2001, Miles Goosens wrote: > (1) Why aren't there CD releases of their enormous and high-quality catalog > of b-sides and rarities? Could be record-comapny issues...could be Smith doesn't think they're up to snuff...could be someone's figuring, "hey - in 2003 or so it'll be the band's 25th anniversary - let's release a box set!" But I speculate wildly. The Cure is one of those bands whose stuff I like very much in small doses, but which wears thin over the course of entire albums (exception for me is the sort of slightly psychedelic pop stuff from the mid-eighties). Haven't heard _Bloodflowers_, have the rest of the catalog except for all the odd bits. - --Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society www.uwm.edu/~jenor/ADS.html ::pushing the pencil not the envelope:: ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 18:48:44 -0600 (CST) From: Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey Subject: [loud-fans] Scary!
