Yard sales were in full swing in Park Slope, and I stopped in front of one of those sad-looking little ones where there's nothing much on display, debating whether to get off of my bike and look or to pedal on. The old guy running the sale saw me and said "I have more records in the crate" and I felt compelled to take a look, 'cause it's kind of rude to just walk on after someone has invited you to look through their crate of records. There was nothing too interesting in the crate, but he did have a neat selection of books/magazines, and I picked up a 1969 copy of F&SF and a 1943 Life. Then I noticed another small pile of records and in it was a well-handled copy of a self-titled record by "The Illusion" on "Steed" records. I haven't heard of either, so I grabbed it for $3. Got it home and it's pretty neat garage-psych. No date on the album, but it looks/sounds very late '60s. It's made in the U.S, distributed by "Dot Records, a Division of Paramount Pictures Corporation." Anyone know anything about the band or the label? It's good enough that I'd like to hear more by The Illusion, if there is more. - --dana Breakfast: Coffee, Cheerios with Silk, Blueberry Yogurt, more coffee Lunch: Pinto bean taco, veggie fajita and a coke, from Happy Taco. Do they have chinese mexican places all over, or is it an NYC thing? Dinner: Sushi (with extra octopus -- yum!!) Movie: Fight Club (Shari liked, I didn't) Book: Alice Through the Needle's Eye by Gilbert Adair CD: Still the Charlatans. Cat: Fluffy and Tofu are tied for #1. Little Boy is still annoying. Mogwai and Squeeble are cute when they play. Pixie is still weird. Momma Cat still hates us. Bird: Pigeon still needs a name. ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Juno offers FREE or PREMIUM Internet access for less! Join Juno today! They had a swoopy looking logo. I've never seen any other Dot records besides hers. I pulled out her stack of 45s to see if I could find one and one I found is Pat Boone singing "Tutti Frutti." I'm fairly certain this predates his "In a Metal Mood" by just a tad. It says "Gallatin, Tenn." under the logo and at the bottom it reads "Ultra High Fidelity." The label is burgundy with silver trim. I didn't know that anyone other than Andy Kim had ever released records on that imprint, but a quick look at the estimable www.borderlinebooks.com reveals that the Illusion were from Long Island, that album came out in 1969, and they recorded two more albums, TOGETHER (also 1969) and IF IT'S SO (1970). Says that all three are available on CD. Does anyone know if the movie version of "Fast Sofa" has been released? Is it coming out Christmas? I'm not finding anything on the internet as to a release date. I didn't see it at my local Blockbuster (the best outlet offered in my area), but that doesn't mean very much.
