Does anyone know exactly when Sarah left the country? I'm guessing it was before 9/11. Her "I'm leaving soon" e-mail to LoudFans was on 8/24. And Jeff is right-on about the new Stereolab. The new one expands on their sound nicely (I love the pedal steel and piano) and also features some very good, though not instantly catchy, songwriting. - --dana ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! I heard a little bit of it in a record store, but not enough to decide I wanted it. My interest in the band has waned a bit. I really liked Dots & Loops, in fact it's probably my favorite album by them. But the album that followed it (the one with the long title I couldn't remember under hypnosis) really underwhelmed me. It seemed to take a small chunk of the sound on D&L and drive it into the ground. So I never even bothered with the one after that. I had kind of figured I'd give them another chance with the new one, and what I read here encourages me along those lines, but what about the one I skipped -- is that any good? Though you must record real time, a disadvantage compared to mp3 players the real bonus is being able to record with mics or a line-in and do live shows. I just recently purchased my second one, one of the Sonys that allows the recording of twice as much onto a disc without a discernable degradation in sound quality. Now no more annoying disc changes during a set. You actually missed two - or perhaps one and three-quarters. _Cobra and Phases Group Play Voltage in the Milky Night_ (and I should get a prize if I remembered that correctly w/o checking) indeed is a bit knotty to get into - but I find it rewards upon repeated listening, when its details can be better heard to advantage. I felt similar to Jon when I first heard it - - but now I like it pretty well. The 3/4 album that followed, _The First of the Microbe Hunters_, follows pretty clearly upon the sound of _Cobra..._. Frankly, it hasn't yet sunk in enough for me to say anything intelligent here, in my office, w/o the CD to hand - but even though the opening track is cursed with a boneheaded title and numbing but not terribly hypnotic repetition ("Outer Bongolia" - ho ho ho), I recall that there was enough interest on the rest of EP (which is nearly full-length - 30+ minutes, I think) to make me interested in coming back to it until I get it. - --Jeff J e f f r e y N o r m a n Lecturer English Department University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee np: Lilys/Aspera ad Astra split CD (Lilys half right now) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Oct 2001 13:49:12 -0700 From: rlewis@adnc.com (Russ Lewis) Subject: [loud-fans] Do I hear $10? Please, just leave the words to Steve, Marty. Also rented the latest edition of "Heathers" on DVD (which makes my earlier DVD obsolete) the night I rented "The Autumn Heart." The latest edition comes with THX mastering and little goodies like the unchosen ending. "If it wasn't for the courage of the fearless crew, the Minnow would be lost, and you are too." "The Strange Idols Pattern and Other Short Stories" and "Ignite the Seven Cannons" I believe were the albums RG produced (they were two on one CDs on Cherry Red), and they are wonderful to listen to. They predate FBTLW by a couple of years ('84-'85). There were two "hits" compilations. The first titled "Gold Mine Trash" (mine on PVC) and the latter, "Bubblegum Perfume," on Creation. If these are track downable, then perhaps get these for a sampling. If worse comes to worse, I'll tape some Felt of your choice for you (just don't turn your nose up at my outdated format...CD burners are still out of my price range). Then again, I suppose sex is a viable substitute for just about anything.
