I don't know about the South, but it's a mainstay in Northern Ohio. I missed some of this thread, so I have no ide aif it's been mentioned, but my favorite regional drink is Moxie, which, as far as I know, is only available in New England, though at one point about 100 years ago it was the most popular soft drink in America. Anyone ever seen it anywhere else? _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Oct 2001 11:23:27 -0500 From: Dennis_McGreevy@praxair.com Subject: Re: [loud-fans] a mulleted nation mourns Jeff cautions: Seriously: Deet mosquito repellent? When Rose was an undergraduate, she took some course on "native plant communities" or some such, and they went on a field trip, covered themselves w/Deet, and were required to take notes, using those Bic pens w/the white plastic coverings. The Deet started dissolving the plastic. Scary stuff. <><><><><><><><><> I suspect it wasn't actually the dimethyl touelene (that's Deet, right?) that did it. There's usually very little of that stuff in your basic mosquito repellents (though if I recall correctly, chronic skin exposure to part per billion concentrations have been shown to be carcinogenic, so we're talking potent nastiness here). The chemicals employed as a medium in which the minimal proportion of active ingredient are suspended tend to be a blend of organic solvents (themselves not particularly wise to go smearing about on one's skin for prolonged periods), which were probably at fault in the bics' untimely demise. Amazing what carbon and hydrogen can do if ya bend 'em the wrong way. - --DM ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Oct 2001 12:40:59 -0500 From: Dennis_McGreevy@praxair.com Subject: Re: [loud-fans] a mulleted nation mourns I question, doug, then Mark reply: > 1) Aren't fats complex carbohydrates? No, they're different. However, carbohydrates can be converted (and stored as) fat by the digestive system. No, carbs are different from fats. Carbs convert to sugar in the body which easily convert to fat. Carbs (and proteins) have I believe 4 calories a gram and fats 9. <><><><><><> O.k., let me be more specific: Is there anything other than carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen in a fat molecule? If so, what? If not, then how are they not "carbo-" "-hydr-" "-ates"? - --DCM ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Oct 2001 20:14:31 -0400 From: Dana L Paoli Subject: [loud-fans] nice package (ns) So, anyone who's thinking of getting the new Spiritualized CD "Let it come down" might want to investigate the limited edition (probably not all that limited) which is pretty darn cool. Regardless of your opinion of their music, I hope that most of us agree that Spiritualized are in the running for some sort of lifetime acheivment award for innovative packaging. I actually like the new one, but I'm wondering what happened to Jason's voice (which sounds very different -- is it actually him singing I wonder). Also, the lyrics to the first song are really pretty terrible. Something about being on fire and there's not enough water to quench the fire. After that, things improve, but unless it's some sort of a joke that I'm not getting, it's a really horrible way to start an album. I'm assuming that everyone saw the thing about Q33 NY and wingdings. - --dana np: Simon Fisher Turner/"The Bone of Desire/When Will I Shoot You Again?" ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO!
