Now and again there's a song on there that doesn't get announced and sometimes I have no clue as to who it might be. Being the anal retentive I am, I'm of course desperate to fill up the blanks. The internet is a handy tool but sometimes one gets too many hits and it's difficult to pick the right one. Like there's this rap version of Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" on the first tape I'm transferring. Does anyone out there know who did this version? From CDNOW I learned that Biz Markie did a version of this, but the voice on the version on my tape didn't sound like his... More questions undoubtedly to follow (and not just about rap). Jack and Meg White had been passing themselves off as brother/sister, but it recently came to light they're a divorced couple. Not sure that without this info I would have made the connection, but I hear a few similarities to Quasi (sardonic subject matter, guitar/drums palette- no keybs here, general song structure). I've used the term "psychobilly" to describe them before (Jack has a Hasil Adkins yelp to his voice) but gotten pushback from others. The best description may be that they sound like stripped down Pixies demos, with the histrionics but without the gonzo second guitar. Jack's guitar has an unfortunate tendency to veer toward heavy metal (and I haven't noticed this, but a friend thinks he lapses into Robert Plant vocal territory at times), a minus in my book. I can't listen to their albums start to finish, but I think about half their material is really neat. I have an acoustic set by Jellyfish from The World Cafe, I let the tape run, and following their show, there is a song by Matt Severe (sp?) called Hills above Wiltshire. My sister in Philly says he's local, but not well though highly of (think Marc Cohn), but I liked the song and am trying to find his CD, Faultlines. I can not find it anywhere. Does anybody around Philly have one, or know where I can get one? I'm guessing they're a bunch in the $3 dollar bin at HMV on South St., but you never know. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Sep 2001 23:42:52 -0400 From: jenny grover Subject: [loud-fans] paranoid Is anyone else having problems with the MP3 of Paranoid up now on the official page? I was able to download it with no problem. You might have a corrput download, or it may have gotten "cooked" - mistranslated in downloading. If you look on the Web for "MP3 uncookers", you should be able to find a program to fix it. Or you could try downloading it again. Thanks, Glen. That sounds kind of interesting. I've liked Quasi since "Featuring 'Birds'" came through the play stack for the late night DJs at WNCW a few years back, and of course the Pixies comparisons don't hurt either. Maybe if I'm lucky (usually about two thirds of the time a disc I'm interested in will scan) it will be on the discscanner system at the record store and I can sample it. Nobody wants a $15-$17 dollar coaster. Mark np The Heartthrobs "Cleopatra Grip" ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V1 #251 *******************************
