[triggercut > You might find something in the history books about how the flag became a divisive point when flag-burning became a popular social event used by liberals in the late '60's (although many conservatives support flag-burning as a case of property rights. You bought it, you burn it). In that same divisive spirit, I've thought the WTC attack happened because airline pilots didn't fight harder for their right to bear arms. I guess it's also okay to blame it on the blind drive for profits in the capitalist system. After all, Falwell and Robinson shouldn't be the only folks who get to exploit this situation for their own purposes. But I'll have to miss out on the rest of all this. I've become so inspired by John W. Sharple's selfless one-upmanship (or patriotism, or whatever you call it) that I've decided to devote the next five days to supporting our nation's embattled airline and hotel industries. Not to brag, but there's also a good chance that people in the mai tai industry will also soon consider me a great American hero. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2001 07:34:21 -0400 From: Dana L Paoli Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Re: And as for musical content: I figure it's a pretty close race between The Clientele and Clinic over which band has made more music fans bemoan wasted money on lousy import albums. >>>>>>>>>> What, have you been feeling ignored by glenn and me lately? Definitely get the THERE'S GONNA BE A STORM CD which has everything (except a few outtakes) they ever did. I'd say that at least three other songs, "Pretty Ballerina," "She May Call You Up Tonight," and "Desiree" top "Walk Away Renee," and all of it, even the stuff they did after Michael Brown left, is grade-A pop. I can't figure out why their reputation isn't stronger. If you like Michael Brown's songwriting, I also think the Stories ABOUT US album is outstanding, as is the MONTAGE album, but that one has never been released on CD and is very hard to find. THE BECKIES is also pretty good, but it gives me a nagging feeling that it could have been much better. I can't really explain why. Bland vocals and lyrics maybe. Ah, I see JRT's problem: he can't read. If this is alluding to what I wrote, I didn't "blame" the attacks on the drive for profits above all; I noted that that attitude may have prevented the implementation of security measures that may have prevented the terrorists from taking over the planes in the manner they did. Note all of those qualifiers; note also that naming something that might have prevented something is not, logically, the same thing as naming the one thing that caused that something. As for "exploiting" this for my "own purposes": I suppose you could accuse anyone who talks about preventing disasters like this of furthering their own ends - since most such suggestions are going to run along the same lines of thought as those persons would otherwise support. Instead, we should all shut the fuck up and help keep bartenders and the makers of little paper umbrellas gainfully employed. - --Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey, who supports gun control and therefore the presence of discreet, *trained*, armed personnel aboard aircraft, so the guns and weapons of fanatics might be controlled. That said, they have returned from a WTC Attack-induced silence and jumped into the biggest story in the world with both feet. http://www.theonion.com Pretty amazing stuff, in that it manages to be pretty funny, cynical, and, yep, ironically detached, all while somehow not veering over violently to being tasteless and exploitative.
