Nowhere on the packaging does it say remastered...just new liner > notes by Elvis. I'm not able to make a direct comparison, but the Rhino CDs sound great, and according to the liner notes, they were remastered by some guy at Digiprep. There are also lyrics for all the songs. Were any of the tracks on the accompanying disc to the Rhino > version of "My Aim is True" extended play selections on the Rykodisc reissue > from early nineties? All of the bonus tracks from the Ryko disc are on the Rhino disc, as well as an early version of "No Action", the live "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself", and the version of "Less Than Zero" that was on the Live At El Mocambo CD that you may have if you bought Ryko's "2 1/2 Years" box set. I know that the bonus discs on the reissues of the > original Warner Bros. releases is something new to feast on. The Rhino folks have been very enthusiastic about the Elvis reissues on their website, and they seem dedicated to making these CDs definitive. I'm diggin' 'em. I just wish they wouldn't release three every three months. I don't have the patience. (I don't have the money either, but that's beside the point. Isn't it?) > 2) the Simon and Garfunkel box set...I read that the box contains miniature > versions of the vinyl packaging for each album (this gimmick has me so > wanting the thing). You are correct, sir. And they're very cute. If you have one of those mini-LP CDs that Capitol released a couple of years ago (such as R.E.M.'s Document), or the Complete Doors box set, or perhaps George Carlin's Little David Years box (I'm trying to give as wide a frame of reference as possible), the S&G covers are actually slightly smaller, much more the actual size of the CD. I think all those other discs I mentioned had a bit larger packaging to accommodate the miniature reproduction of the dust sleeves inside, which the S&G discs do not have, so be careful when you open them -- each one is individually shrink-wrapped! -- so they don't fall out. There is also a booklet with all the original and new liner notes (and lyrics) for all the albums. And don't let the shape of the box fool you -- the booklet is the same little square shape as the mini-LP covers. So why didn't they just stick the whole thing in a smaller box, one that would, oh I dunno, FIT ON YER FREAKIN' CD RACKS?!!?? It's all part of the record industry's ongoing efforts to give anal retentive music lovers everywhere one more thing to bitch about. You know who I are. Is there any difference in sound quality from the 1997 > release of the "Old Friends" box? This box was produced and remastered, respectively, by the same guys who produced and remastered Old Friends; this, combined with the fact that I can detect no difference between the sound on either box, indicates to me that perhaps all of this material was remastered at the same time. Compare this with the Byrds box, which had an okay remastering that was followed by the astonishing remastering job they did with the individual album reissues, thereby putting the box to shame. You might also notice that Sony seemed to follow the same release strategy in both cases: snappy box set followed by the complete catalog released several years down the road. They know that we aforementioned anal retentive music lovers just can't resist. How much is this box set running in cost? > I got mine for $46.99 at Tower; the individual CDs were $12.99 each, so the box is definitely the better deal, and the cool packaging is a bonus. I'm personally wondering if anyone (in the US) has heard any buzz on the new Super Furry Animals album. After quite a few listens, it's sounding really great: sort of like the Bowie/Beach Boys/Beatles/Roxy Music techno album that the world has been waiting for, funded by Sony so it sounds like a gazillion bucks. Also, it's apparently the first album to be simultaneously released on DVD in 5.1 surround sound, which seems to be a big deal. I'm hoping that Roger will invite me over to listen to it, as I'm still living with my ancient two speaker stereo (does anyone else remember those?) I think that "Rings Around the World" comes out in a week or so here. I get the impression that the band have a reasonably high profile in England, so I'm surprised that they get so little press around these parts. The "hit single" from the album is called "Juxtaposed With U" and, IMHO, they could sell a million copies simply because of the title...Destiny's Child must be kicking themselves for not thinking of that first. There's a pretty cool website too, funded by Sony so it looks like a gazillion bucks, at www.ringsaroundtheworld.co.uk . - --dana ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Even better, Michael Mitton and the much-loved, much-missed Julianne Overall showed up to make a complete loudfan event. After an undistinctive opening set from Chris McFarland (Austin-based, makes up in volume what he lacks in originality), Rebecca came on playing solo guitar, backed occasionally on an acoustic bass and someone playing a keyboard, analog synthesizer (I thought it was an Optigan), and a lime green iBook. She did mostly songs from the new solo EP, with twittering, off-kilter electronic and lounge influences and periodic repeated Glassian riffs. One moment in particular reminded me of Steve Reich's Point/Cointerpoint, in which Pat Methany's electric guitar is looped overand over again, while he plays live to the recordings. When completed, the new Gates songs didn't so much end, as stop. She also did at least three tracks from Arches and Aisles - "Greetings from the Sugar Lick," "Love, the Lazee", and "Kid in Candy," which she described as an ode to Portland. (Does anyone else find it incredibly difficult to remember Spinanes song titles? They never correspond with choruses...) I knew nothing of Neko Case, except by reputation, save the New Pornographers record Mass Romantic. But from the first track, a mostly a cappela piece addressed to someone named Andy, it was clear that this modest-looking woman, who speaks in a perfectly pleasant but unremarkable voice, could sing the bejezus out of a country song. Julianne whispered in awe, "She can wail." She did songs from a new "secret" Canadian tour EP, from her current and past records with Her Boyfriends, and a lot of traditional material - "Poor Wayfaring Stranger," "See the Pyramids," some Hank Williams and some Dylan. She also did some songs from contemporary songwriters - the woman from Cub, and a band called Destroyer. The Destroyer piece was staggering, something about love in the guise of military metaphor, and it immediately put that band on my to-check-out list. Case's band, all two members with no percussion save a tambourine, was excellent. In addition to an upright standing bassist, she played with a multi-instrumentalist named John who did pedal steel, acoustic, electric, banjo and tambourine, all brilliantly. He won deserved applause. Based on the reputation of Bloodshot Records, I was expecting some hard twang and raucous country-rock songs, but the material was wholly of a traditional bent in style and performance - more Patsy Cline than Whiskeytown. I suppose it hews too closely to tradition in form to fit in lite-rock Nashville. But otherwise, I can't for the life of me think that this woman is not going to be a huge star. The crowd for both Gates and Case was sizable and mostly respectful, although Rebecca issued a preemptive strike against the drinkers by the bar to quiet down. Considering the crowd had paid their $10, I can't figure why anyone would just sit in the corner and yammer over such good music. Long-time Scott Miller fans (fans of who?) may recall that at one time, Scott kept pet rats (not pink press rats). Long-time Scott Miller fans (say what now?) may also recall that former mid-afternoon guy and present large-planet aficionado Michael Quercio was a late addition to a late edition Game Theory, although that version of the band never released any recordings. In a sad twist of fate, the two tales are intertwined. It seems one day, Scott and Michael were running through some songs together and decided to tackle the Beatles' "Hey Jude." As both were songwriters and singers, there was a bit of friendly competition, so as they approached the song's coda, both simultaneously decided that the rising vocal figure just before that part of the song would be grounds for a little vocal competition. Each pushed the vocal part to higher and higher octaves, as dogs throughout the Bay Area suddenly felt compelled to seek out their apartment, and Mariah Carey awoke in a shaking fit, when suddenly, 'round about 30kHz, an odd splutting sound emanated from a corner of the room. A few seconds later, floating down from the ceiling, where they'd ended up due to lack of oxygen, Scott and Michael discovered to their horror that their high notes had caused Scott's poor little rats' skulls to disintegrate. Shocked and stunned, both artists decided their musical partnership was just too dangerous to continue, and Scott resolved that from then on, he would do what he could to prevent evil in the world. The Entity is a ForeignInstallation that sits inside your consciousness and lies to you and dis-empowers you, robbing you of your essence, and aims to weaken you and bring you into pain and suffering. For it is written in the eyeinthepyramid... All of the wars of this earth - aimed at population control - are the result of the Entity, that which we call "The Flyer", the shapeless black amorphous mass that no one can see unless you practice mind-cleansingdiscipline. Silence. Focus. Concentration. Listening to your intuition and shutting out the noise around you. The frustration for (and indeed the eventual ousting of) the Entity is in the "Not Doing". There is more power in silence than you know. There is liberation. In the "doing of nothing", the Entity begins to go away, it is no longer fun to be on your back, to hold you as its prisoner. You will then begin to shake off this parasitic monkey on your back. The Entity consumes off your negativeenergy - it's aim is to destroy you, bring painanddestruction to you, and ultimatelydestruction, robbing the Creator of your experiences, and then the Entity moves on to continue its trail of detritus and destruction... The Universe has brought you here because the Lightforce wishes to accumulate the experiences of your journey here. You are one of a trilliontrillion beings throughout all the multi-verses, and but a nerve ending in all that is Creation. In the same way that the Human Body is a miracle to us, but nothing more than a sensorynervecentre, and a recording device to take back with it all it's experiences on this remote world. For it is written in the eyeinthepyramid... For generations we imprisoned our livestock and farm animals for food and sustenance; would you have thought you were being farmed yourselves? According to a most Secret Report, it is the plan of the Flyer-controlled Governments of the world to continue to keep our foodstuffs unclean, containing more chemicals than are made publishable, the water filtration process still composed of "gray brain-matter destroying" lead and lethal flouride which clouds your power of discrimination. There has been a cure for the cold for over 80 years - one of the better known daily remedies of royalty passed on to them by the benevolent Grays and sorcerers being the consumption of silver; but authorities have pushed up the price of silver to the extent that it is impossible for you to maintain its dosage requirement. Certain medicine is not made known to you, and is kept out of the pharmacy - it is there, but it's price is high, and only we who have reached deeply within ourselves and discovered our true power, can afford to pay for it. Gold is like silver, and silver is like health. Manifest silver as you need silver, and the same can be said of health. Let not the ForeignInstallation confuse your power. It makes you afraid, so that what you think is your weakness you fear is actually its own fear of the strength that you really have. You are truly more powerful than you can possibly imagine. But you must learn to re-wire your mind. You must break the comforting patterns and habitualroutines, for in these The Entity makes you believe there is safety; so that your growth is stymied and the true extent of your mind is never known to you - forever trapping you into a platitude of mundane repetition. If only you realised how whatever you wish can be yours - dream it in silence and in meditation and it shall come to you. For you will see in the eyeinthepyramid... The Entity lies to you - trust not your inner voice, trust your more tranquil inner intuition; the quietness that leads you to discover. Meet all whose eyes you make contact with, for with them lies a connection to you; in all that is said you begin to get closer to the truth. The consciousness of mankind is becoming ready to know. Your oxygen supply is being thinned yearly, so that only the bare minimum will be made available to you. Even for your oxygen you will pay. Are you so sure you now what is behind the Ozonedepletion report? They keep you weak, and divided because a united mankind can destroy The Entity that is the Flyer - with your thoughts alone. As the walls of Jericho were brought down by thought and the sound of trumpets, so the Torah tells us. Through the instruments of government and churches, your scriptural texts have been edited. Your Baghavadgita, Bible and Koran are but shadows of what they once were. For it is written in the eyeinthepyramid... Your scriptural edits rob you of the knowledgeofprayer. They keep you scared and running around trying to earn money. This takes your minds off discovering true inner power - and there is so much of it. The Entity sits on your consciousness and controls everything you do, see and "think" you believe. The Entity allows you only the smallest amount of lifeforce, envelopes all of your energy, drags you down, absorbs your life-strength, so that only the most minimum lifeforce near your ankles is kept free - giving you just enough connection with mother earth to survive. To kill you completely is fruitless for the Entity, it wants to see how much fun it can have with you first. So you will find the Entity in all your bars and wherever there is drink, and fast cars and beautiful women. There you find The Entity. These are the facts: The world is at war. Humanity is at war with a secret enemy - secret only because only a small part of the population knows about it - others discredit it and even others deem this to be trash, nay, the utterances of a crazy man. If you are ready to listen, then do so now. The Reptilians are at war. The US State Government holds mankind's contact and encounter with the Alien Entity at the highestdegree of secrecy. The Entity has a greater degree of power and control than you realise. For it is written in the eyeinthepyramid... The thoughts you hold - your inner voice is not your own. The only mind you really have is your Intuition. Your intuition does not waiver - it is firm and grasps clearly. Your thoughts smash you up because they are not your thoughts. The indecision, the misdirected thinking is not you thinking. The Entity has taken over everyone by agreement. Ever since you were very young you unknowingly allowed the Entity to enter you and take over by the agreement you made with it. The Bible says that whenever two people meet and agree on something, then it is so... well, it is so. This is one of the truer statements made. We have all made agreements with this Entity. Through prayer. By listening and believing it to be yourinnervoice. The Entity resides within mostofhumanity. Have you exorcised your demon? Alcohol, speed-cars and the Entity are not a good combination. The Entity does not care for you. The Entity is in it for what it can get out of you. The Entity is the other voice in your head - which confuses you, which brings you hardshipandpain. The Entity lives off the negative energy you emit. The Entity enjoys bringing you pain - once it has destroyed you it leaves you... and goes onto anotherhumanhost. The Entity is like a Kid that steals the car. The kid can not wait to act recklessly and race round the block - even if it means that he smashes the new car - usually this sort of kid is Entity-possessed and has not been Entity-cleared. Please be aware of your Entity and sitinsilence; and do nothing - it will drive the Entity away. Yes, Do nothing. Do things that bring you no reward. Speak to plants in the desert. Bush and Jesse Helms "public servants" is like calling Iran-contra criminal Elliott Abrams an "outstanding diplomat"--which is precisely what White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer did when he announced Abrams' appointment as senior director of the National Security Council's Office for Democracy, Human Rights and International Operations. - Terry J. I've been mulling over reasons for why the top 10 bestsellers in books suck so much these days, and also for music (at least according to Hornby, though some here dispute that), but without resorting to the "as opposed to yesteryear, people now prefer crap" explanation. So here's my theory (written for fiction, although I think it basically applies to music as well): Pulp fiction is usually pretty interchangeable. That is, you might like Steele or Grisham, but there's nothing particularly distinctive about them; there are other authors who you would enjoy just as much as Steele, but there's no particular reason to run out and buy them, either, because they also are not distinctive. On the other hand, quality fiction (and I'll just assume we know what that means) is distinctive. If you like Proulx or Updike, it's much harder to say, "Well, author X has everything Proulx's got." If you like Proulx, you pretty much have to read her. In the past 30-40 years, the book business has changed quite a bit. Publishing houses have consolidated so that end of the industry is more concentrated. Since pulp fiction is interchangeable, the (now) larger publishing houses don't have an incentive to promote all of their pulp fiction. Consumers find it interchangeable, so they only need to heavily promote one author, and consumers will buy that author. So whereas before, we had many publishers each promoting many pulp authors, we now have a few publishers promoting a few authors. At the same time, independent bookstores have been replaced by B&N and Border's. The same process works here. They don't need to stock their display windows with every romance author out there; they only need to pick one or two, and leave it at that. With independend booksellers, they might each choose a different author for their displays, but B&N makes a corporate decision and awards a limited few with promotion. Add to this the economically puzzling practice of discounting the bestsellers--if pulp authors are interchangeable, then just buy the one on the bestseller list since it's cheaper anyway. All of this has the effect of concentrating consumers' pulp fiction purchases onto a smaller number of authors. And this is why pulp authors now dominate the best-seller list. We might be buying the same pulp to literature ratio as in 1961, but the pulp purchases are being concentrated onto a smaller number of authors. OK, that's my theory, backed up with no hard facts whatsoever, so please feel free to comment. And, where do I get the data to try and test this theory? Very happy that Michael Zwirn reported on the Neko Case show, because all I could think of to write was "I'm in love with Neko," Michael np GT "Real Nighttime" ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V1 #213 *******************************
