As somebody who has done web design at many times and others, I say: Clip art is a quick and convenient way to make your web site look bad in as mundane a way as possible. Much better to get a digital camera and take a few relevant photographs, and keep the rest of the site's graphic design as clean and simple as possible. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2001 12:32:50 -0400 From: "glenn mcdonald" Subject: [loud-fans] Gifts OK, sniping at mass-media coverage of celebrity aircrash deaths is a fairly petty and unrewarding sport, but this particular bit of one of the stories about Aaliyah seemed relevant to our discussion of what's become of the music business: "Aaliyah clearly was an artist that had gifts .... Nowhere on the packaging does it say remastered...just new liner notes by Elvis. Were any of the tracks on the accompanying disc to the Rhino version of "My Aim is True" extended play selections on the Rykodisc reissue from early nineties? I know that the bonus discs on the reissues of the original Warner Bros. releases is something new to feast on. Now I want these bloody things, but how many more times am I gonna have to buy this man's catalog? I bought the crappy '80s Columbia versions, then the Demon imports, then Rykodisc, now Rhino is beckoning. When will the wallet sucking end? 2) the Simon and Garfunkel box set...I read that the box contains miniature versions of the vinyl packaging for each album (this gimmick has me so wanting the thing). Is there any difference in sound quality from the 1997 release of the "Old Friends" box? How much is this box set running in cost? Feeling drained dry, - -Mark p.s. To the linguistic purists, I realize my e-mail address (yes, AOL leaves something to be desired, and I swore I'd never go back, but...you know how I am) is a hybrid of Italian, French and English slang. It is intentional. I like the look of "Viva" in print better than "Vive," though the word does bring to mind Morrissey solo albums and paper towels heavily advertised in the seventies by that short stocky woman who played Rhoda's mom, whereas "Vive" makes me think of "Vive Le Rock," a certain Adam Ant LP I'm guilty of owning... New Pornographers, "Mass Romantic" (Mint) Put five guys from Vancouver in a band that would rather be Oasis or even the Small Faces in their arty period -- or the Beach Boys topping "Good Vibrations" or, why not, the Beatles -- together with someone doing a good imitation of Phil Spector crinkling up tinfoil, bring in Bloodshot country singer Neko Case and watch a smile spread through the room, and then watch it soar into the sky like a balloon, and Case fly through the air like Supergirl, or anyway Helen Slater, who will do. "The song, the song, the song that's shaking me," Case warbles off her feet in "Letter From an Occupant"; I couldn't make out the next line, but the boys' "woo-woo-woo-woo, wee-ooo's" were clear as day. Well, I believe the reissues have had to do with the fact that EC retains the rights to the recordings and licenses them to particular companies for limited periods of time. (I think this is the case w/Bowie and Zappa as well.) Ryko, even though they've put out a lot of good stuff, has a nasty habit of keeping things in print all of five minutes. I'd have to say Rhino is likely to be a better home - plus, they do know how to do reissues. Another driving factor would be technology: certainly the sound on the Ryko issues is vastly superior to the original Columbia CDs. I haven't heard the new Rhino ones, so I can't say re sound quality. I also heard they collect the bonus tracks on extra CDs rather than append them to the original albums, > 2) the Simon and Garfunkel box set...I read that the box contains miniature > versions of the vinyl packaging for each album (this gimmick has me so > wanting the thing). Is there any difference in sound quality from the 1997 > release of the "Old Friends" box? How much is this box set running in cost? I just read a review of this in..._The Onion_'s AV Club? www.theonion.com & follow the links - if I recall, the reviewer mentions the price (not that he'd know!). Apparently, there remain a few tracks exclusive to the previous box set (or "boxed set" for those who somehow cannot fathom "box" as an adjective). Joe Frazier and George Foreman - now that's a boxed set.
