That's the one where they choose the 100 best soul/R&B albums. My local stores, for some reason, skipped straight from July to September, and I can't find any place online to buy it either. That whole "mainstream like Semisonic" threw me, even though MINE AND YOURS (the David Mead album in question) has been in regular rotation in my stereo since it came out a few months ago. I loathe Semisonic, but David Mead... ahhhhh. The voice of an angel, a gift for melody, and just enough lyrical ambition (i.e., the ambition adds an intriguing dimension to the music rather than making the listener think "what a pompous egomaniac"). I'll never figure out why Joe, Marc's Brother put the leaden, inexpressive voice of Joe Pisapia up front, relegating David Mead (who was in the band in the mid-'90s) to backing vocals. I guess they didn't want to change the name to "David, the Friend of Joe and Marc." Anyway, MINE AND YOURS, and its predecessor, THE LUXURY OF TIME, are both quite wonderful records. Mead is a Long Island boy, despite his Nashville stint, and he's now living in NYC, so he should be playing live at a Paoli-accessible venue on a regular basis. He's also got a pretty funny bio page at http://www.davidmead.com/bioframe.html. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Aug 2001 11:36:18 -0400 From: Dana L Paoli Subject: Re: [loud-fans] John somebody (ns) That whole "mainstream like Semisonic" threw me, even though MINE AND YOURS (the David Mead album in question) has been in regular rotation in my stereo since it came out a few months ago. Just that he occupies a similar, not-quite-mainstream but theoretically capable of getting radio play, melodic pop with guitars and good production, niche. - --dana ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! In fact I enjoy it so much that I went to a taping. While you're waiting to get into the show, they hand out cards on which you can write a question for the weekly Q&A portion of the show. That's where you get to query the hosts, Adam Carolla and Jimmy Kimmel, on some topic of extreme manly importance. To answer Chris' question, the Fox is now deceased. However, I heard from a friend who attended UCLA that he would see the Fox performing (he's a ribald piano player/beer guzzler) at local pubs. He was 100% legit, and could down an entire pitcher before the average fratboy could drink a single glass. Needless to say, he was highly regarded in the most manly circles (and appeared on the show during the first season). A nice obit appears here: http://talkshows.about.com/library/extras/blobitbillfox.htm As a tribute to the Fox, at the end of every show, Adam and Jimmy lead the entire audience in Fox's trademark "Ziggy-Socky" chant followed by a group beer-guzzle (they prodide the audience with real beer during the taping). Anyhow, week after week, Adam never seems to be able to finish his entire beer. I view this as a direct insult to the memory of the Fox. So, on my questionaire, I asked "Why can't Adam finish an entire beer?". I guess it was a slow week and they choose my question. I got to stand up (next to one of their dancing girls) while they read my question aloud and poked fun at me. The show aired about a month ago. Anyone interested in an MPEG clip, please let me know (it's about 16 megs). On a disimilar note: Am I the only one who is giddy about Sloan. Their name never seem to come up. Matt ...to offend, to oppress, to despoil, to plunder, to assassinate or enslave one's fellowman is ordinarily regarded as a crime. In public life, on the other hand, from the standpoint of patriotism, when these things are done for the greater glory of the State, for the preservation or the extension of its power, it is all transformed into duty and virtue... ...This explains why the entire history of ancient and modern states is merely a series of revolting crimes, why kings and ministers, past and present, of all times and all countries--statesmen, diplomats, bureaucrats, and warriors--if judged from the standpoint of simple morality and human justice, have a hundred, a thousand times over earned their sentence to hard labor or the gallows. There is no horror, no cruelty, sacrilege, or perjury, no imposture, no infamous transaction, no cynical robbery, no bold plunder or shabby betrayal that has not been or is not daily being perpetrated by the representatives of the states, under no other pretext than those elastic words, so convenient and yet so terrible: "for reasons of state." These are truly terrible words, for they have corrupted and dishonored, within official ranks and in society's ruling classes, more men than has even Christianity itself. No sooner are these words uttered than all grows silent, and everything ceases: honesty, honor, justice, right, compassion itself ceases, and with it logic and good sense. Black turns white, and white turns black. The lowest human acts, the basest felonies, the most atrocious crimes become meritorious acts.
