Most songs with >"Rock'n'Roll" in the title seem to have the inside >track. Let's think - Clapton's 'Rock and Roll Heart', Lou Reed's album of the same name, Joan Jett/Arrow's 'I Love Rock and Roll' - yeah, all pretty horrible. The Ramones' first big misfire, 'End of the Century', included not one but two songs with the words 'Rock and Roll' in their titles. Even the great Tom Petty isn't immune: the only songs of his which I find unlistenable, with the exception of some of those on 'Into the Great Wide Open', which Petty himself has acknowledged was a bit of a mistake, are the ones based around those fateful three words ('Anything that's Rock and Roll', 'Baby's a Rock and Roller'). Coincidence? I don't think so. What a long, strange trip it's been dept.: I'm going to have to unsub for now, although I'd hesitate to rule out returning at some distant point in the future. Never say never, and all that... The reason I'm quitting for now is that following an audition a couple of weeks ago I was offered a place at the Academy Drama School in Whitechapel, London, so I don't think I'm going to have time to keep up with the list, or for that matter to listen to enough music to be able to post on-topic occasionally! Most songs with > >"Rock'n'Roll" in the title seem to have the inside > >track. I'm surprised to see John forget one of his own favorite power pop songs, the Beat's "Rock N' Roll Girl," a song that clearly disproves that theory, as does the Velvet Underground's "Rock And Roll," Chuck Berry's "Rock And Roll Music," and the Rubinoos' "Rock And Roll Is Dead." I won't claim Tuff Darts' "All For The Love of Rock And Roll" is worthwhile, I suppose, but both of the Ramones songs listed in the earlier post are quite good, even though END OF THE CENTURY is a mediocre album. But I do have to agree about the most annoyingly overplayed song ever, "Old Time Rock N' Roll." And I'm a big fan of Bob Seger's late-60s stuff. Another horrible song, though it skips the "roll," is the Who's "Long Live Rock," which I pick as their worst song ever. Oh, and here's a few classic FM radio tunes. Whether they're good or bad depends on your taste for the bands we'd been discussing earlier (i.e. Journey, Styx and so on): AC/DC's "Rock N Roll Ain't Noise Pollution," Boston's "Rock And Roll Band," Kiss' "Rock And Roll All Night," Gary Glitter's "Rock And Roll Part 1" and "Rock And Roll Part2," Rick Derringer's "Rock And Roll Hootchie Koo." I epsecially like the last one, but maybe that's just me. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 Aug 2001 09:57:24 EDT From: RanBeever@aol.com Subject: [loud-fans] Boston-area (sort of) Emm Gryner date I know I've seen Emm Gryner's name come up on this list in a positive light from time to time, so I thought I'd pass along this interesting little tidbit for Boston area fans. I've been the recipient of Stef's mixes in the past and I must say these are the most weirdly entertaining ones that I ever receive. Needless to say I've hardly ever heard of any of this stuff. So...onward. CD-1: The Hellacopters - (Gotta Get Some Action) Now! Sort of Stooges garage punk. Phyllis Diller - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction This certainly outdoes those Leonard Nimoy albums. Of course she throws in some additional lines like "I wore a see-through dress and nobody looked". The Boyz from Brazil - A Terra Do Frazer Crer Haven't a clue what this cool jazz number is about, but I worry about a band taking on this name. Johan - Pergola Made me think of the REM's "The End of the World..." with it's rapidly delivered lines. Actually kind of infectious. Mauro - Let Me Know This starts of pretty promising with some interesting keyboards & drums, but rapidly goes downhill when the singing and awful lyrics begin. Moments and Whatnauts - Girls Zappaesque me thinks. Dean Carter - Jailhouse Rock This was so badly recorded it almost sounded funny...but not quite. I hope this isn't a relation of the other more well known Carters. Katerine - Je Vous Emmerde Can't think of anything to say about this one. Motorpsycho - The Other Fool In spite of the band's name this was actually rather cool. A weird mix opening with this California 60's guitar thing that moves into a rather neat bass section followed by a cello. Cambodian Rocks - A2 I think Stef has this thing about collecting bands with strange names. I can best describe this as psych folk pop sung by an female alien. A little unnerving. Self - What a Fool Believes Amusing music and a vocal delivery that is so monotonous it's hilarious. Bob Neuwirth - Traveling Light I didn't need Stef's note to pick up on Peter Cases distinctive vocal accompaniment. Finally a song I can actually relax and enjoy and not listen to in shocked amazement. I think Peter may have done this song on one of his own albums. John S. Hall & Kramer - Clarity Transcending Choice no comment The New Bomb Turks - Summer Romance I've never heard this band before but heard of them. Very Ramonesy to me. The Sea and Cake - Afternoon Speaker From this combination of band and song I should have something to say, but I don't. Andre Williams & the Sadies - Hey Truckers A shuffling ode to the highway....ah America! Cornelius - New Music Machine This really did nothing for me. I saw this band open for the Flaming Lips a couple of years ago and was annoyed by them. maybe it's just me. Space Ghost - Hoodleehoo And what would a Stef mix be without a SG tune, the title track to boot. Alex Gopher - The Child A jazzy song with a bit of a hip-hop sound. Demolition Doll Rods - Married for the Weekend Thrashing Donna's wannabes. The Rosenbergs - In Pursuit Another few moments of relief. I really like this band. Eddie Palmieri & His Orchestra - Ay Que Rico wake me when it's over... Preachers - Who Do You Love? One of the BEST versions I've ever heard of this song! Sure sounds vintage. Who were these guys? Space Ghost - Fluffy Wonderful Stef! Green - B.I.T.C.H. Sounds like a "Rocky Horror" outtake. CD 2 to follow................... Don't be so sure you know what you don't > like... Well. I went to the band's website and downloaded a couple of MP3 samples, from three songs, one from each of the three albums listed. _Over the Hills and Far Away_ wasn't listed, and maybe they've changed dramatically, but... Sample 1 was from "She Is My Sin," from the album _Wishmaster_ (not to be confused with that product Suzanne Somers used to advertise). Blast of very fast guitars, bass, and bass drums, playing 16ths, a chime-like synth line, and then the operatic vocals. The melody was interesting, but the arrangement sounded pretty standard metal to me. Lyrics include lines like "Take heed, dear heart / Once apart, she can touch nor me nor you / Dressed as one / A wolf will betray a lamb" and "Lead astray the gazers / The razors on your seducing skin / In the meadow of sinful thoughts / Every flower`s perfect." Sample 2 was from the album _Angels Fall First_, a song called "Elvenpath." I can't remember now if this was the one that started with the doomy synth and subdued vocals before leading into the typical metal bit in a frenzied Phrygian mode, or the other one with one of those two features but not the second. Lyrics? "Hearing music from the deepest forest / Songs as a seduction of sirens / The elf-folk is calling me / Tapio, Bear-king, Ruler of the forest / Mielikki, Bluecloak, Healer of the ill and sad / Open the gate and let me follow the uncarven path." (They're Finnish, as glenn mentioned.) Oh - and more stuff about a wolf. Sample 3 was an excerpt from "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean," from the album _Oceanborn_. Here are some lyrics: "A snowy owl above the haunted waters / Poet of ancient gods / Cries to tell the neverending story / Prophecy of becoming floods / An aura of mystery surrounds her / The lady in brightest white / Soon the incarnate shall be born / The Creator of the Night." Okay, probably the best of the three lyrics - I suppose they come by the whole folkloric, forest thing naturally. Album covers? _Wishmaster_ features a gloomily lit, heavily shadowed painting in red and black tones, showing some sort of being standing atop a rock in an ocean, gesturing toward some images of what I can't tell, at the resolution and image size the cover is reproduced. The band's name appears (as it does on all the covers) in a rather formal looking script font that strikes me as almost greeting card-y. _OCeanborn_ is primarily blue and black, a large moonlike orb in the sky made to look like an eye with the assistance of eyelid-shaped clouds or something, some sort of white bird in flight, and some sort of image in the water - an upside-down baby? Again, small picture... _Angels Fall First_ features a moody shot of a single tree in silhouette in the lower right-hand corner of the image, a red sky fading upwards to black, where a small planet that looks like neither the moon nor the sun is suspended in the sky. Sad to say, the whole impression is just way too Spinal Tap for me. The music relies too heavily upon the same-ol' same-ol' metal distortion (a specific kind - guitarists hereon could probably help me out) played in the rapid metal way (is it all upstrokes? or downstrokes?). The synths sound rather dated - odd, since the band formed only in 1996 (sez the site) - and the vocals are absurd. Sorry - I just connect emotionally with any of this. But it's good to have tried. He usually shows it off much sooner than that, often within the first 30 seconds of meeting you. That said, this is a *much* better video than the rather boring one included in the multimedia section of the album, not least because I recognized damn near every location shot in the video. English major rant of the day: Reign (v) = Exercise of soverign power, like a king or queen Rein (v) = To check or hold back as if in the use of reins similarly: Reign (n) = The period during which a particular monarch is in power, as in "The reign of King Swozzlekins the 32nd" Rein (n) = a means of restraint or check (usually plural), as in "He held the reins" This seems to be one that nobody but me cares about anymore, but THEY'RE TWO DIFFERENT FREAKIN' WORDS! Hey, let's not joke about this stuff. "Reign of Frogs" came periously close to being "Rein of Frogs" (picture the little froggies with the saddles and all). I beg to differ with Mr. dmw's theorizing: I would imagine that most of the folks who enjoy the current pop music scene wouldn't know what rampant pitch correction (anyone read about Mariah Carey's "breakdown"? I think we have a gold medalist in the Emotional Special Olympics!) was if it bit them on the ass, nor would they be able to recognize artificial time lock if it meant that their SUV/riceboymobile/phat ride would be repoed on the spot. <><><><><><><><> Waitaminnit, whatthefuckisa"riceboymobile"? - --D, hoping doug is right, too, but less out of concern for the state of music (personally I think the most effective solution would be to make music which overexaggerates to the point of overt offensiveness the characteristics that bug you, given of course that one has large scale international distribution) than out of concern for the implications regarding doug's relationship with his god if he's not, seeing as how he did follow the time honored "repeat it three times" method for making wishes come true. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 Aug 2001 15:16:38 -0400 From: "Larry Tucker" Subject: RE: [loud-fans] Hoodleehoo tape revoo #1 |> Cambodian Rocks - A2 |> I think Stef has this thing about collecting bands with |strange names. I guess this gives us all license to mention our pet peeves. It drives me nuts when people who are sick to their stomach say they're "nauseous." The correct word is "nauseated." I you say you're "nauseous" you're saying that you make people want to throw up. Please, no jokes about how often the word is unwittingly being used correctly... _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V1 #190 *******************************
