We at Amoeba Music have declared it a big, big disappointment. A lot of us are big enough fans that we've been waiting ages for it, but it's badly organized and not terribly rewarding for the die hard. It sounds good, which, is nice, but most of the rarities are acoustic demos (Furay demos anyone?) or "remixes" and the full band unreleased tracks are mediocre. Plus, the last disc is simple the first two albums in order (even though all of those tracks already appeared on the previous discs.) The booklet looks great, but most of the text is simply press from the 60's (not the most revealing era of rock journalism) and kind of hard to read. Plus it's one of the big booklets that smells kind of funny--whatever paper they used gives me a headache. Anyhow, a real let down over all. It's got Neil's fingerprints all over it i'm afraid. In my opinion, individual album's are an artist's voice--do whatever you want, follow your own rules, etc. etc. But a box set is a fan's baby and you should include whatever the fans want and not what you think belongs. Especially if you're Neil Young and you have a track record of being clueless. I always hold that Beach Boys box up as a really strong box--lots of alternates and rarities, a bunch from the (then out of print) Brother albums, great tracks salvaged from horrible albums, the best Smile stuff, a "bonus" disc where all the tracking sessions/talking/weird mix stuff is exiled, and a good book. Plus the hits! I'm kind of reissue exhausted anyhow. I still eagerly await long lost gems, but it's a little overwhelming. Really, the catalog that needs reissuing now is the Sly Stone catalog--the state of that catalog is embarrassing. I sometimes think I'm the only rock fan who still likes new music. luv ('n haight), B NP Shostakovich string quartet 2 ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Jul 2001 19:12:59 -0700 From: "Bradley Skaught" Subject: [loud-fans] Life On Mars A e-acquaintance of mine that works for the art gallery that represents Chris Mars tells me there might be a new Mars album on the way! I often find myself the champion of underdog artists (especially ones like Mars whom everyone seems to agree on despite few ever having heard his stuff), but Mars is a particular favorite of mine. His last two albums are among the strangest things I've heard--weird, homemade psychedelic records full of bizarre sounds and lyrics about mad cow disease and kidney transplants. Great songwriting, too--really catchy and rocking. The voice is an acquired taste, but I'm assuming most on this list are fairly used to "acquiring tastes" for such things. Anyhow, Mars' albums are a big part of my pop universe and I'm thrilled to hear there might be more. Hey, I just ordered the new Porcupine Tree (does that count?) and the new Sam Phillips is next Tuesday. While we're on the subject of boxes, anybody shell out for the Echo and the Bunnymen box? I was a big Echo fan once, but I'm not sure I still like them enough to want second copies of all the albums, and there doesn't look like that much novel stuff in the box. But I could probably be swayed by a really enthusiastic testimonial... glenn ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Jul 2001 21:28:02 -0700 From: "Bradley Skaught" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] BS Box? Don't know anything about the box, but apparently their in-store appearance at the SF Amoeba last week was a real disaster. They went on at 5:45 and played for fifteen minutes--they were scheduled to start at 6. Icing on the cake was good ol' Ian making the in-store manager cry because he was upset that their "dressing room" (the Amoeba break room) wasn't a Bunnymen only room. He was, from all reports, fairly ruthless in raining abuse down on the poor girl. Real shame. Good point is made here--all the Buffalo Springfield albums are remastered and still at budget prices.
