Though you gotta admire a band that can write an actual fugue. For some reason I never bought another Gentle Giant album until years later, when OCTOPUS failed to make much of an impression on me. I should give it another shot. You all probably know that Ray Shulman produced the first Sugarcubes album (and did a great job), which I find amusing. Y'know, Card's comment about "graduate degrees" might apply to the Grateful Dead...but then I was thinking, hey, _The Onion_ already did that in their article suggesting that the Dead had simply performed one, very long song over th entire course of their career...but that got me wondering: why not assemble a band (a large one) to perform the world's longest concert? Good thing we didn't tell'em about the Def Leppard business... Dese guys don't watch VH-1 huh? Andy 18:44. I'm northbound on Hoover, waiting for the light to change at James M. Wood Boulevard. A white sedan enters the intersection from my right. It veers left and the passenger door swings open. The woman in the passenger seat is screaming. At first I expect her to fall out, then I watch the open door. It's going to hit a parked car. But the driver tightens his turn. From the back seat, my fare says, "That was a ho trying to jump out of a trick car." "How do you know that?" "The word's gone around about that guy driving the white car. Stay away. He stabbed a ho in the hand a couple of days ago. And, I recognize the ho." "Do you work with her?" "No way. That girl's just getting started, doesn't know what she's doing. Around here's a turnout tract. Hos work in tennis shoes around here. I'm not a ho; I'm a prostitute. I don't even own any tennis shoes." "If you're positive about that guy, should we call the police?" "Don't do that, she doesn't want to go to jail. She better learn to take care of herself. I'd have sliced him up." "With what?" "My boxcutter." My passenger takes a single-edged razor blade out of her mouth and demonstrates the proper grip and slicing motion. Then she puts the blade on her tongue and, mouth open, rolls and flips it like I might play with a cracker. "Is that sharp?" "Razor. I have to get a new one every couple days because they rust." Oh boy, new Firewater! I did not know. I absolutely adore THE PONZI SCHEME (favorite song: So Long Superman, but I like every single song on that disc). But I've never heard the first album - don't know why I never got around to getting it. So would I like the new one? Wasn't the tribute more like 1997 or 1998? You know, I've finally made my money back on these after all these (how ever many) years, so it doesn't really disturb me that they're going for 11 cents on eBay when I'm selling them for $8 postpaid. I still have around 40 of them left, and sell them at a rate of about one every other month these days. Probably THE PONZI SCHEME is better than I am giving it credit for, but the songs on it didn't grab me as much as the ones on GET OFF THE CROSS, WE NEED THE WOOD FOR THE FIRE. Also, the first album has Yuval Gabay on drums, not that the drumming on the other albums is bad. After a couple of listens I'd say that the songs on PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY are overall catchier than either of the other albums, not that the others are slouches either. The instrumentation is a bit more straightahead, though. If you like any of them you'll like them all, is my prediction. - -- http://www.dfan.org ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Jul 2001 17:34:12 -0400 (EDT) From: Aaron Mandel Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Crack the Sky?? I found Psychopharmacology to be a little too laid-back for my tastes. However, I haven't given it more than two listens, because yesterday was a truly great new-release day for me... I've been listening to the new Edith Frost and String Builder CDs, and to the Sparklehorse sampler I found. All big hits with me, as each performer overcame the obstacles that had previously kept me from loving them (Edith's occasional lack of melody, String Builder's shrillness and Sparklehorse's perverse vocal production). Hm -- that seemed nice and parallel when I thought of it, but the fact is that the first two fixed their problems, while Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse doesn't seem to have changed... I just stopped minding it. Conveniently, I already have both old Sparklehorse CDs at home; I got them out of bargain bins and then occasionally came back to glare at them for not living up to my expectations. aaron ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Jul 2001 17:38:13 -0400 (EDT) From: dmw Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Crack the Sky??
