I was referring to the (possibly apocryphal) story from the TOPOGRAPHIC OCEANS tour, where Rick was spotted onstage scarfing down a curry during a particularly unexciting part of the show. Doing a web search for "Rick Wakeman +curry" turns up all sorts of interesting stuff. "Yep, the mans a hero of progressive rock and make no mistake. He was a genius player. He helped Yes put together 2 of progs most awesome albums. But above all he was the beer drinking, curry devouring lady-killing playboy anarchist of 70s prog" - www.glitzycape.free-online.co.uk "Keyboard wizard Rick Wakeman was at the forefront of Progressive Rock in its heyday, bringing his energetic classical skills to bands such as The Strawbs and the legendary Yes. Already an established session player, featuring on David Bowie's classic "Space Oddity", his unique blend of virtuoso talent, outlandish capes, and on-stage *curry* habits secured his place in rock history." - -- from http://www.go4mylondon.co.uk And here's a picture of Wakeman onstage in the late 70's (with a beer and something edible on top of his keyboard) http://home.maine.rr.com/abajoran/img/rw16.jpg > It was lovely to see you all on Saturday, and to meet Elizabeth in > person. I notice that the bonus demo version of "Reaper" on AGENTS OF FORTUNE is annotated as the "No Cowbell" version. Since Bruce Dickinson is credited as being in charge of the remastering, I'm not surprised. For those of you who don't know what the hell I'm talking about, the cowbell thing is a reference to a now-infamous BOC "Behind the Music" Saturday Night Live sketch from a couple of years ago with Christopher Walken as Bruce Dickinson.) >Of course Anton and his band were brilliant, like they always are, and >judging from the feedback afterwards, won over a large portion of the >crowd who weren't previously familiar with them. All the bands were great, but I gotta admit that Anton is a total madman. He can sure work the crowd. And I was so proud of Our Bradley playing drums behind Scott, especially since he had to deal with some particularly difficult songs. He pulled it off very well. To me, the Scott/Kenny & friends set was a Loud Family show, especially since I finally got to see a Scott-led band perform songs from AN. Andy Skunk Cabbage A rattle of winter-stiff grass in the bog and in the sheep shed a ewe, mother-mumbling deep in the throat two lambs still orange with birth. The ewe is busy licking the larger, butting her toward a teat, paying no attention to the runt in a corner, giving up. It's all quite peaceful, this dying. Everyone wants it. Already the ewe is digging a grave as she licks and butts, is scratching a trough in which to nudge what didn't work out. I rub the runt angrily. He has no right. I work his legs, force his mouth against a teat, knead his neck to start the swallowing, and force the milk. Too fast. He chokes, eyes bulged, and from the nose, small bubbles, unbroken. It's an act, I tell the legs to kick, the eyes to look lively. They don't, they mean it. Digging a grave at the edge of the bog, the muck in love with my shovel, sucking it in, down I go. This death is all there is. And from below, from the roots of skunk cabbage (that yellow-spotted purple thrust to come) a sharp sour scent muscles up, says Live God damn you, live. - --Rennie McQuilken, from his book of poetry WE ALL FALL DOWN ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Jul 2001 00:35:32 -0400 (EDT) From: Aaron Mandel Subject: Re: [loud-fans] We're only half as far as we need to go On Tue, 3 Jul 2001, Stewart Mason wrote: > LOVE AND WAR--The Pets actually a 2000 release. i haven't gotten around to filing most of my 2001 acquisitions, so i'm forgetting a lot, but i've liked: Atom And His Package - REDEFINING MUSIC Jon Brion - MEANINGLESS (also 2000? it first reached Other Music in Feb.) He seems skilled at the art of aggrandizing the obvious. In that sense, very much a product of academia. I know you meant this as a joke, but since Mark recently mentioned he wanted more personal posts on the list I figure I might as well oblige, perfect segue afforded me as it is... A couple of weeks ago my parents received a summons for me from the police department. I've been charged with Criminal Threatening and Criminal Mischief (read: vandalism). The intriguing thing about this is that after duly requesting all the discovery information I found that the police report was dated in March of 1999. At no time between then and now was I ever contacted, questioned, arrested, or otherwise identified as the suspect in question... and yet, now I'm forced to spend money to defend myself against charges that are obviously mistaken (since I know for a fact that I never smashed someone's window and threatened them with a gun, as I am charged with doing). Hooray! Jury trial on July 16th. The prosecution already said that they were seeking a year in jail for the Criminal Threatening charge at the arraignment. Is it my turn to be the martyr now? Consoling comments welcome. (the other) Dan ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V1 #149 *******************************
