And for those of you that haven't seen it, a movie recommendation: directed by Jake Kasdan (the other guy behind Freaks & Geeks), it's a delightful comedy/mystery called Zero Effect. Well written and quite ingenious- one of the only times I've found myself actually HOPING for a sequel. One of my favourite recent movies, actually. Rent it tonight, won't you? Obligatory musical content: There's a nice Brendan Benson song on the soundtrack! Yay! Yes, glenn and I championed this one onlist when it came out. Whether we persuaded anyone else to watch it, I can't say. Kasdan has two film projects on the griddle, FRESH KILLS, about which IMDb sadly knows almost nothing, and a comedy, ORANGE COUNTY, with Lily Tomlin and Jack Black. He's also working on a TV series called "Undeclared," but info on that is scant as well. Anybody else hear the rumor about a new Kate Bush album? Andy Q: What is your philosophy of film? A: Ill go back to a statement of Peter Brooks:- In the theatre, you can walk out onto an empty stage and say Here in Timbuktu and instantly you are in Timbuktu. In other words, you can create a physical reality in the abstract. Film is completely the opposite. In film, physical reality has a very strong place. You cant walk into an empty space and say Here in Timbuktu unless you want the film to be instantly classified as a filmed play. Q: Unless its done like My Dinner with Andre, in the sense that the conversations evoke such strong visual impressions in the viewers mind. A: Right, but when you are engaging people in a dramatic story you have to be very real about the world. What a film can do, and what few filmmakers actually realize, is you can film peoples internal lives. Dirk Bogarde once said to me Ive made a career out of my ability to defocus my eyes. If you defocus your eyes, people ascribe to you all sorts of inner emotions, -an inner reality. In the theater you have to describe it all, you have to say it all, you have to act it all. In the cinema you dont have to act it. But the great thing about the cinema is that the exterior world, which seems so real, actually becomes a metaphor for the interior world of the characters. That is the difference between great cinema and mediocre cinema. Because if you can treat the world outside as a metaphor, if it feels like the interior world of the characters and the exterior world in which they operate are the same thing, then you start to have great cinema.
