Besides being an all around wonderful medium (and now that I finally have a CD Recorder, I'm even more appreciative of how wonderful minidiscs are) they've expanded the recording time, to the point where you can get several hours of mono speech onto one minidisc. They're not as cheap as tape, but I think if you factor in durability, the advantages of random access, the longer playing time, and the great sound quality, minidisc is the way to go. Plus, it'll be great to have if you want to record live shows. As always, see www.minidisc.org for more info. - --dana On Thu, 10 May 2001 09:19:51 -0500 Miles Goosens writes: > A question for the journalists among us -- what do you use to tape > interviews? I'd never heard it before, and was about to make a private apology to Syd for questioning his best-of, but before I could do that, I asked one of the sales folk what song it was. And the answer was Kevin Ayers. Ok, so I've heard of Mr. Ayers before, and I've even heard one of his songs (covered by Bongwater) but I'd never actually heard him directly. And, uh, based on the four or five songs that got played while I was in the store ("Sorry, that's our store copy" they said when I tried to buy the CD, which was a compilation) he's worth a closer look. I checked out his website, but it didn't >really give me a sense of where to begin. Kevin Ayers is really all over the map, but I think his early 70s solo records are really the best place to begin. That's assuming you don't want to begin with THE SOFT MACHINE VOLUME ONE, which is the only record Kevin did with the group and is by far their most pop-oriented work, largely due to Kevin's songs. WHATEVERSHEBRINGSWESING and JOY OF A TOY are generally considered the highlights of his catalogue, and the former has my all-time favorite of his songs, "Song from the Bottom of a Well." (That's undoubtedly one of the ones you heard, and it's probably his most Syd-like song.) Random notes: Mike Oldfield first became known when he was the lead guitarist in Kevin Ayers' band The Whole World, and if you like Ayers, Tom Newman's FINE OLD TOM will delight you. It's the best Kevin Ayers record Kevin never made. Pudman's recently gotten into Ayers, so I'm sure he has something to add. They're early Ayers (70-71). I've also heard YES WE HAVE NO MANANAS, which is nice enough, but not prime. The first record by SOFT MACHINE also features Kevin Ayers--it's the source of "Why Are We Sleeping," the Bongwater cover. Check out also the records by 801 for more Ayers. While we're on the topic of Cale, I thought I'd mention that the first line from his song "Guts" ("Bugger in the short sleeves fucked my wife/Did it quick, then split") is a reference to Kevin Ayers, who did in fact schtup John Cale's wife one afternoon before the performance recorded on 801's live album. That is an odd one. It used to be that advertisers followed pretty predictible good guy / bad guy narrative strategies. They didn't make fun of people who used or liked the products they were selling. These people were to be admired. The laughable ones were those who didn't buy. Now it seems as though the goal of many, if not most, ads is just to get people's attention any way they can. To change the subject, perhaps under the heading "Things I Understand All Too Well", I just had to share these actual teaser headlines I saw on a copy of YM BEAUTY magazine in the grocery line last night: "Finding Your Inner Supermodel"; "Make Friends with Your Hair"; "One Girl Who Fought for Plastic Surgery"; and, "Stars Reveal What Makes Them Feel Pretty". About a year or two ago, I heard Ayers' song "Stranger In Blue Suede Shoes" on the radio, loved it and then posed this very question to this list! Now that I've bought six Ayers albums as a result, I feel pretty qualified to answer. WHATEVERSHEBRINGSWESING is Ayers' acknowledged masterpiece, a sort-of concept album that contains "Stranger" and what's both Stewart's and my favorite Ayers song "Song From The Bottom of a Well." I'm not that fond of the rest of that album, though. My personal favorite is the more commercial BANANAMOUR, which is full of catchy (but still pretty weird) songs, including "Oh! Wot A Dream," the song about Syd Barrett. The US version contains his near-hit "Carribean Moon," so is preferable to the UK issue. My next favoite is his weirdest, SHOOTING AT THE MOON, which has some bizarre noise experiments along with the warped pop songs. The song "Lunatics Lament" has one of the world's greatest guitar solos, a noice freakout by none other than Mike Olfield. ODD DITTIES is a pretty good "hits" collection, but Ayers is another one of those artists who's more interesting album by album. I have six albums (the four mentioned above and JOY OF A TOY and YES WE HAVE NO MANANAS) and like all of them. I don't think you can go far wrong with any of those. The only problem is that I don't think any are in print in the US. They all seem to have prices of $20+ on GEMM and elsewhere. I see there's a US release called COLLECTION. I just checked the song titles and it has some of the key songs, but doesn't seem to be a better overall listen than the individual albums. That man is a fuck. A worthless fuck. Read what he says about Unrest. He doesn't GET Unrest, so he panics and trashes their fans as idiots who need to "get a life." He's a fool. A pathetic old man. They're the other "Un" band that I like (don't like Unsane and haven't heard the Unband. Is there an Unbunny as well?). - --dana ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Juno offers FREE or PREMIUM Internet access for less! Needless to say, the >Jagger rumors turn out to be just rumors. Worst concert ever! Tee Hee, I had to laugh at this one. One of my close friends back in the late 70's was this tour's financial manager for the tour...he had been tapped to be Jagger's water boy for one show in Toronto. I saw the New Barbs show at the Oakland Coliseum and as I recall, I was so star struck...or really just thrilled to be enjoying the fruits of the dressing room (free booze, good food) that I barely watched the band. Of course I was about 19, in a less jaded era and much preferred the early Stones at that time. That said, I do recall Richard's guitar playing was as fine as ever (perhaps the one thing I always liked about the 70's-80's Stones). It wasn't the worst I've seen...the most annoying I can recall was Katrina And The Waves when they were breaking (that was about it for them too). The worst I can recall was probably Prince at the Coliseum for Sign O' The Times slogging through two set long medleys of songs, never finishing more than about a 3rd of any given song. The best I can recall is one of many actually...pretty much any of three Tom Waits shows, any of the shows on the Rain Parade Tour I worked, any show from Alastair Galbraith, Boston from Loud Family's '99 (or was it 98) tour, Buzzcocks and Pointed Sticks at the Geary temple in 80 and every Feelies show I ever saw...not one exception. The best secret Stones scam show I saw (there've been so many...this is the only one I cared about since I was in on the joke) was former punks Sudden Fun in full Bay City Rollers-style pop mode appearing at the Mabuhay Gardens club in SF as "Tattoo" the night before the Stones played some enormodome on the Tattoo You tour. - - Dan - ----------------------------------------------------------- King Record Worldwide Lathe Web http://members.home.net/vallor/ Xpressway List Group http://www.egroups.com/group/Xpressway - ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 May 2001 23:34:14 -0500 From: steve Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Things I don't get On Thursday, May 10, 2001, at 07:03 AM, Elizabeth Setler wrote: > On the "Things I Don't Get" thread, a recent headline on the cover of > Modern Bride Magazine - "Ten ways to put the sizzle back in your sex life! > " On *Modern Bride.* Shouldn't this not be a problem at that point?
