I've listened to Jon's tape a bunch of times, and it's hard to get all this drony wall-of-noise stuff straight >> Yeah, subtract 10. They are due for a new album proper in May. "Blue Collar Love" is early Starflyer 59, when they liked to stare at their shoes, but, wasn't everyone in the early nineties? They are a different beast now. You may like them more in their current stage of evolution. Macha is one band, Bedhead was another: the EP these two are drawn from is a long-distance collaboration. Bedhead recorded some basic tracks, then Macha completed the arrangements. On their own, the two bands sound quite different from one another - Bedhead was an outstanding exemplar of the Codeine/Red House Painters/Ida area, with a bit more Slint in the mix; Macha are neo-psychedelic with an Eastern influence that's actually earned (two members journeyed to Indonesia and studied the music for a while). I like both bands, but Macha's closer to me. They apparently are working on a new one to come out in fall - either of their two releases, the first self-titled or _See it Another Way_, is highly recommended. - --Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society www.uwm.edu/~jenor/ADS.html ::flag on the moon...how'd it get there?:: np: Ulan Bator: Ego:Echo ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Apr 2001 14:17:09 -0400 From: Dana L Paoli Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Tape Review: Jon Gabriel's 'Rhythm Is Gonna Get You.' >np: Ulan Bator: Ego:Echo >>>>>>>>>>> I'm pretty fond of this, especially as an example of a French band succeeding in sounding vaguely menacing. Anyone heard any of their pre-Gira releases? I saw another band on Michael Gira's Young God records, Flux Information Sciences, playing live recently. On CD, they didn't sound like much, but live they were almost a must-see, even if you have no interest in their music (modern day no-wave with more synths and no guitar). They consist of a keyboard player who looks somewhat like the mustached guy from Sparks, playing a keyboard that makes only noise; a lead "singer" dressed head to toe in leather who performs karate moves while making noises from his mouth and playing another keyboard; a preppy bass player, and a girl drummer playing a very distressed kit with intense concentration. What I found compelling was the fact that they managed to play extraordinarily unstructured songs (no melody, no beat, two unrelated singers going on simultaneously) and yet every so often, without looking at each other, the whole band would come together for a simultanious crunch-crunch. I can't imagine how much rehearsal goes into that. If they play your town cheap, they're worth a trip to see. They had a pretty neat light show too, for a band playing at Brownies on a weeknight. Just don't expect to come away humming anything. - --dana ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO!
