She was born and raised on a farm outside of town
(Where are these farms?  Most of outer Spartanburg is new subdivisions)
and she saved all her money from a teenage paper route
Enough to buy a little business of her own
(and mama's new trailer and Dale Earnhardt collectibles)
It's an anchor, it's a reason to live, and it's her home
(sheesh, shoot me now)
She sits there all day right by the Wilco station
Sometimes she wears the robe from her high school graduation
(and I thought Flannery O' Connor was dead)
Doesn't mind the heat or the noise or the semi smoke
(being hot like it is here...yeah, the only jobs are in trucking or 
convenience stores, like Wilco)
Just smiles and waves and ignores all the evil jokes
(hmm, kind of like me on this list)
Now I don't know why I love her but I do
(because she's a simple little SC redneck girl and you want to get her 
barefoot and pregnant, like God intended)

She was robbed four times by a guy with a kitchen knife
(Four times?  She must really be a dumb little redneck girl...the South and 
violence, especially domestic, are like peanut butter and chocolate, right?)
Just emptied the till and looked him straight in the eye
(then spit out her Marlboro and said, "Marry me, Bubba")
One time he wrestled her down to the mattress in the back of the shack
(covered with a Confederate flag bedsheet, bought at the truckstop near the 
Wilco)
but the way she laughed made him run and never come back
(um, whatever...perhaps he was a bit, well, small?)
Now I don't know why I love her but I do
(analysis...did wonders for me)

One day I bought a black rose and I asked her to be my wife
(a tad on the William Faulkner side, perhaps?  Is her name Emily?)
I share the mattress in the back and I share her simple life
(being she is from SC and hasn't finished sixth grade and all)
Dealing baseball cards while she trims off dead stems
(neat, kind of like a Morticia for the KKK set)
And we'll be pushing up daisies together in the end
(poetry, sheer poetry, man...kind of like the Colourfield meets Roy Clark)
Now I don't know why she loves me but she does
('cause she is from SC and hasn't finished the sixth grade, and hasn't 
developed higher reasoning skills)
If you think it's wrong you don't know the way it was
(I don't wanna know the way it was)

MOBY DICK.  It's about how Herman Melville looked 150 years into the future
and made fun of me."
