As a kid, McVeigh had noticed that the 'Star Wars' movies showed people sitting at consoles -- Space-Age clerical workers -- inside the Death Star. Those people weren't storm troopers. They weren't killing anyone. But they were vital to the operations of the Evil Empire, McVeigh deduced, and when Luke blew up the Death Star those people became inevitable casualties. When the Death Star exploded, the movie audiences cheered. The bad guys were beaten: that was all that really mattered. As an adult, McVeigh found himself able to dismiss the killings of secretaries, receptionists, and other personnel in the Murrah building with equally cold-blooded calculation. They were all part of the Evil Empire." - --from AMERICAN TERRORIST: TIMOTHY MCVEIGH AND THE OKLAHOMA CITY BOMBING, by Lou Michel and Dan Herbeck. Some of this debt will be removed if I teach in a need-based area in SC (I plan on teaching in Charleston, I've decided). Back in the eighties, you could have all your debts wiped out, and people would get Ivy league educations and run up their credit cards, and then declare bankruptcy and be debt free with a free college degree. Besides Columbus, the helmers in talks for the >> job at various points were: Terry Gilliam, Jonathan Demme, Mike Newell, >> Alan Parker, Wolfgang Petersen, Rob Reiner, Tim Robbins, Brad Silberling, >> and Peter Weir. You can just see the movie executive's head thinking... Hmmm. We have Harry Potter. Who to direct? Well, Gilliam is known for creating unique, magical worlds, like in the Harry Potter books... Demme can create powerfully creepy atmospheres combined with a sense of innocence... Mike Newell has proven that he can balance charmingly British humor and pathos... Alan Parker is a master of spectacle... Wolfgang Petersen can deftly handle big budget, special effects laden films... Rob Reiner has extensive experience bringing books to the screen successfully, notably "The Princess Bride..." Tim Robbins projects have been skillfully filmed and critically acclaimed... Peter Weir is one of the most acclaimed directors working today and one who's most recent film, "The Truman Show," was both a popular and critical success... Oh, and then there's Chris Columbus, who hasn't had a significant hit since 1993's 'Mrs. Doubtfire,' but who made lots and lots of money with "Home Alone," which was about a little boy who... wait! Lots of Money! Little boy on his own! That's his territory! Get Columbus on the phone and tell the rest of these chumps to get the hell out of my office! And Hollywood grinds on... Far from being beneath Gilliam, I think the Potter series is excellent and right up his alley. The only director who creates worlds as successfully as Gilliam, IMO, is Tim Burton. Actually, we're lucky that the atrocious "Grinch" wasn't a hit until after the Columbus/HP deal was long signed or we would be seeing Rob Howard directing "Potter." Yuck. R. Warners has the rights for the first three books, thus giving Rowling some clout. If you can believe what you read, she's already bested Mr. Spielberg on casting, and she does have script approval. You get those kind of things when your last book sold over 8 million copies. I see that Rik Mayall is listed as Peeves the Poltergeist. This is good news, as I'd not seen anything about him in a good while. Looks like his ATV accident was not fatal. - - Steve __________ Is this thing on?
