Hi everyone.. I saw the Softies in Minneapolis and I must say that they rocked.. I was very impressed by the guitar interplay between Robyn and Nigel, er... I mean Kimberly. Robyn did seem very subdued though, I hope this isn't a one-off tour but I have a feeling that nothing further will come of this... Entering the 1st Ave, they give out complimentary tix for future shows, so if there is anyone on this list who could use Old 97's (4/10) tickets or Wanda Jackson w/ Rosie Flores tix (5/21) drop me an email and I will send them to you... I also saw Joe Jackson Sunday night in Milwaukee in the 1/3 full Riverside Theater, and he (despite a bad cold) put on a fabulous show.. Great band (no guitars!!!) and the songs from Night & Day II come off much better live than on the CD... Good mix of Night & Day I & II tunes, with 10 or so other oldies thrown in... Depends on how you define "seriously": I'd agree if you mean "regards all that depressive stuff as deep, meaningful reflection of one man's inner angst and whatnot." But the main reason that view fails is it utterly misses the fact that a lot of Morrissey's lyrics are downright hilarious, and not accidentally so. And none of that has anything to say about the music itself - which, at least up through _The Queen Is Dead_, is wonderful about 3/4 of the time. So it could be that, should Stewart ever drive in Milwaukee, he'll need to avoid any streets I might be on. - --Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society www.uwm.edu/~jenor/ADS.html ::"In two thousand years, they'll still be looking for Elvis - :: this is nothing new," said the priest. np: Guided by Voices _Isolation Drills_ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Apr 2001 19:19:29 EDT From: JRT456@aol.com Subject: Re: [loud-fans] isolation drills (ns) In a message dated 4/3/01 3:45:31 PM, flamingo@rt66.com writes: << Well! And you would be shocked at how many people take songs like "What She Said" and "I Know It's Over" completely seriously. All I think is that if you can listen to the chorus of "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" and not crack a smile, you are deeply and thoroughly missing the entire point. And that's not even including the obvious comedy songs like "Vicar In A Tutu," "Girl Afraid" and "The Headmaster Ritual." Written and recorded while Robert > Pollard was separating from > his wife of more than 20 years, these 16 songs form > a sketchbook > betraying his sadness and loneliness. If you look at some of the past few GbV/Pollard releases it kinda leads up to this. _Speak Kindly of Your Volunteer Fire Department_ was a product of the most relentless touring Pollard had ever done (in the Matador days the band only seemed to go out for a few weeks) and that's what the songs are about. Working towards realizing ambitions ("Do Something Real", "Slick as Snails"), temptations on the road ("Tight Globes"), paying a few thoughts to the family back home ("Messiahs"), and the nice feeling after a good show while looking forward to the next one ("And My Unit Moves"). Then after that, the next Fading Captain release was a 7" single, the A-side of which is a live recording of "Dayton Ohio, Nineteen-Something-and-5" (from the _Tonics & Twisted Chasers_ album) backed by some ominous, almost Jandek-like B-sides. It took me awhile to figure out that the single is a kind of "concept record" about returning to normal home life AFTER being away living out _Speak Kindly_. The A-side song sets it up with Pollard reiterating the *good* things about being back in Dayton, the B-sides are about, I guess, the cold reception from the folks at home who were neglected ("There'll be no welcome wagons when I get home"... "People tend to take you away"). And now you've got the divorce album! I don't want to encourage gossip, though Pollard's been fairly open about the inspiration behind _Isolation Drills_. I just think he tells the story very effectively. _Speak Kindly_ did nothing for me at all until a friend pointed out their observations about the "road" theme and then the album made a lot of sense and I came to love it. The _Dayton_ single struck me as superfluous noodling a year ago. Then, on a whim, I played it again recently and it's naked clarity hit me right between the eyes. This especially effected me because, despite what someone said earlier about Pollard's "nihilism", I've always found him heart-warmingly optimistic (I put on GbV records when I want to believe that pop music really can save the world) so this suddenly bleak outlook was disturbing. And I think _Isolation Drills_ is wonderful. I love how it starts out with bright pop songs done in Pollard's usual indecipherable lyric style and then seems to unravel towards the end as his words start becoming more straighforward and he opens up, like a friend who suddenly starts pouring their heart out as a conversation progresses. I look forward to what he's going to do next and seeing how he regains that sense of hope and goofiness that's been part of most of his work. His optimism seems so strong to me that I can see him facing down the demons and really coming up with something great. I think his best work is ahead of him. Oliver PS - I believe Pollard has remarked somewhere that "How's My Drinking?" is his response to Dayton critics who've criticized him for his enebriated stage demeanor. PPS - For the person who asked about the new Frank Black earlier, I think the new album is divine. Like Pollard, I think he's another artist who's really cutting himself an interesting path. On Frank's initial solo records I hear constant themes of escape and lots of "misunderstood misfit" moping (which resonated with me a great deal), but he doesn't seem to have those concerns anymore. With his recent approach to making music (live to 2-track garage/country rock 'n' roll) and his seemingly rejuvinated view of his place in the scheme of rock history he seems "comfortable" and more confident than ever now. And, as an almost college graduate who still doesn't know what I want to do or where I want to go after May, I can't help be energized by the sound of someone who's found his place. Oh yeah, and the record smokes. Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! This is the sort of comp that no indie-rock social gathering (okay, perhaps that's an oxymoron) should be without. I think I saw that some one-stop or another was going to bring some in at a mighty reasonable price in a week or two, so you may want to be on the lookout for it at your local hepcat-type music shop. Personally, I reached my GBV saturation point at "Alien Lanes", so I'll be interested to see whether this new record will be the beginning of the end for their old fan base. Not like anyone here cares, but the new Cathedral is purty swell. No more goofing around like the last couple ones, "Endtyme" is kind of what should have appeared between "Forest Of Equilibrium" and "Etherial Mirror".
