It's bugged me for a while, 'cause after the band split up the guy moved to Walthamstow, the London suburb where I live, and he used be a regular in the pub that I tended to go to at the time. All this brings back memories of the early Pooh Sticks song, from when they were in their feyest phase, 'I Know Someone Who Knows Someone Who Knows Alan McGee Quite Well', which featured some line about signing with Sire and making a record 'with expensive Lenny Kaye production': I always assumed that was some kind of pop at the Weather Prophets. The Weather Prophets came out of that period in late eighties England that produced some of my favorite pop, like Felt at their peak (Belle and Sebastian ain't got nothin' on these guys), and the House of Love, materialized on record for public consumption largely to the efforts of McGee, so I plan on buying some of these new Poptones releases to see if his ear for good music is still on the button. Cuz I thought they were one of those Swedish garage-rockers a la Hellacopters - but this is a sort of Beatley/Beach Boys slightly psychedelic number. The singer sounds kinda like Wayne Coyne from the Flaming Lips. The bridge shifts into 3/4 for a clever effect, then multiple ba-ba-ba vocals - surf's up! Nice counterpoint on the chorus between an echoey, high-register piano in one channel and in the other...a big Hammond organ. <><><><><><><><><><> There was a band from California circa '91 - '92 who used this name. They recorded at least one record, which a coworker of mine played to death. They were sort of noisy and uninventive, from what I recall, which ain't much. I've no idea what became of them. Only complaints are that I couldn't hear Belinda's vocals (dang, she looked fine...just wish the skirt was above the knee, and I think she's gained some weight! She looks much sexier heavier to me), and the commercial overkill right before they played reminded me why I don't watch TV that much. Oy. Screw Huddle House! Also, I liked Dave better when he was on later and smoked cigars. He's lost something, but I can't say exactly what. Just know it isn't there anymore. It's like Dave is playing himself. Know what I mean? Charlotte looked really good, and I enjoyed watching her concentrating while she scaled the frets on her guitar. Jane is still opting for the "queen of the trailer park" look she's been doing for awhile (the Today show look she had last summer is still going strong...guess she couldn't wear the Betty Page number she wears on her latest solo record...I love Jane, even though I think she tries too hard to get attention...hell, if it weren't for her, there wouldn't be a Go-Go's since she's written most of the songs! She's my favorite drummer (tied with Gil). I remember the look I got about 10 years ago when I was asked by someone after a show the band I played in had who my influences were. You've broken an unwritten guy law when you tell another guy that Gina Schock is your biggest influence. **** 'em. You don't need a sperm count to rock!
