This was one of a stack of late-60's 45's that a friend had inherited from his several-years-older sister. A lot of them turned out to be regional hits from the Philadelphia area, from the day when there was still such a thing as a regional hit, so that might be Mr. C's story. The main thing I remember is that the two sides of the single were identical save for the use of the title lyric. A-side went: "Baby, oh baby, boogaloo down broa-oadway," while the B-side (entitled IIRC "Look What Love Can Make You Do") went: "Baby, oh baby, look what love can make you do." Well, I remember hearing the commercial on the radio when I was a little kid, so it must have been from the 70's. It's from a CD called Popshopping and it's full of music from German commercials from the 60's and 70's. I pictured a bunch of emaciated, spiky-haired punkers pogo-ing and spitting like it's 1976. Speaking of pogo-ing, I forgot to mention in my review of the GBV concert last week: Any of you who've lived in Madison for the last 15 years or so probably know who Marco Pogo is. For the benefit of those who don't, Marco Pogo is an incredibly thin, bug-eyed guy, clearly with a thyroid condition, who began showing up in Madison clubs in the mid-eighties pogo-ing spastically to every band who played. Initially, it seemed as if he'd pogo to pogo-worthy music - but it gradually became clear that his double-time pogo-ing was elicited by damned near *any* music. So there he was at the GBV show. We hadn't seen him for years (not that we *know* him), and at first he was kind of a nostalgic pleasure to see - but then he started his act directly in front of us, and its manic and seemingly compulsive aspects started becoming distinctly annoying - esp. when he starts madly bobbing at one of Gillard's slow, arpeggiated guitar intros... As far as I know, though, he didn't go through multiple t-shirts as he used to back in Madison... - --Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society www.uwm.edu/~jenor/ADS.html ::a squid eating dough in a polyethylene bag is fast and bulbous...got me? __Captain Beefheart__ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Mar 2001 18:11:33 +0100 From: "Ian Runeckles & Angela Bennett" Subject: RE: [loud-fans] (review) Semi-Literate Poppy Stuff Cindy, then Steve wrote: > > 9) When Will I Be Loved - Sandy Denny / Linda Peters > > I have to confess, I saw this song title and cringed. Write to ABC and beg them not to cancel the Geena Davis show. This bizzarre anti-Geena Davis show conspiracy must be stopped. 3. Watch Survivor. Scan the Audities list for interesting bickering. Ponder whether Enuff Z'nuff are really all that. 6. Scan the Magic Dirt list for more messages like: fred, YOU are the disgrace to australian music. it's people like you who are giving the money to overseas artists, such as britney spears of the like. fuck. wake up to yourself. she doesn't even write her own songs. i think you should really think about what u say before u write anything. because if you knew anything about magic dirt, you would know that they are an extermely talented band and they certainly do not just play three power chords... go and have a listen to friends in danger, dood. i'm sure you can pick up on plenty more chords...that's if you can understand real music, and since you listen to britney spears, i doubt that severely. adalita does not "whine like a bitch" but you know, (gasp!) that's just what britney spears does!!! at least magic dirt have the talent to write and sing and play their own songs. go back to teeny bop lala land and fantasise over sum 19 year old boob. because yes, that's what she is. a boob. and that's the reason she's there. because she's got boobs and so people will look and listen and give big recording company's lots of money. adalita is exactly the opposite. she's a top chick and she rocks as hard as any guy, she's not supposed to be a sex symbol (although in my books she is :). listen to some real music you dick. and get a life. 7. Write a nasty letter to that idiot at smartertimes.com (a daily ritual). 8. Go to the "bad" record store and see if they'll sell me a promo copy of the new Mogwai album. 9. Go watch loud-fan Paula play at a bar in Park Slope. Uh oh. Survivor Conflict. 10. Yes, it's from WONDERFUL WORLD OF THE WONDERMINTS. Since the Wondermints are (IMO) great musicians but not terribly great songwriters, it makes sense for them to do a covers album.. On the WWW album, they also cover Pink Floyd ("Arnold Layne"), the Raiders ("Louise"), Glen Campbell via Brian Wilson ("Guess I'm Dumb"), even an Abba song ("Knowing Me, Knowing You"), and make them all sound like Wondermints songs.. Definitely my favorite album by them, and I think this album was just reissued somewhere, because I've seen it around for less than Japanese import prices. Also, the Fountains of Wayne version of "These Days" is a bonus track from the UK "Troubled Times" single, probably out of print, but you can download it from N--.. Yes, I discovered this one on the soundtrack to Larry Clark's second film, ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE. Clark's new film, theoretically coming out this year, is BULLY, an adaptation of the most depressing book I've ever read. The drums are noisy indeed...and then halfway through, some aliens take over the record with some ominous synth noises while strange chatter rackets away in the background. Then it ends. Cool. <><><><><><><><><><><> Fuzzbox - cheap digital delay set for tightly spaced multiple repeats - (maybe) light phaser (or more likely) wah set in one place and not moved - slightly overdriven amp. The cheap delay is crucial; it provides the trebly metallic (as is the the sort of noise made by whacking a piece of metal, not as in James Hetfield) sound. 18. pedal fetishist, - --Dennis ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Mar 2001 12:10:17 -0800 From: Tim_Walters@digidesign.com Subject: Re: [loud-fans] (review) Semi-Literate Poppy Stuff >> 20) Punk Rock T-Shirt Melting - Stew >unless this is a secret hidden title for one of the bonus tracks on a TNP >album, i haven't heard (of) this song. someone tell me more? It's from SWEETBOOT, the homemade CD Stew has been selling at shows. I believe the songs are all demos for GUEST HOST. One made it on ("Lady of the Manor", which became "Daddy Feelgood"), and one is really a little too demo-y (he says things like "OK, we need another verse here... maybe a trumpet solo"), but the other six (I think, don't have it to hand) are very nice Stew songs with minimal arrangements. "Punk Rock T-Shirt Melting" (which I would have called "French Marie"--is there a list of titles somewhere? There's none on the CD itself) is probably the best, although "Bermuda Love Triangle" is also excellent. Unfortunately, "Naked Dutch Painter" and "The Statue Song" are not included. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Mar 2001 12:17:16 -0800 (PST) From: "Joseph M. It's from STEWBOOT, a CD-R of non-album acoustic songs Stew sold at his shows. It's also available from the TNP website, http://www.negroproblem.com. I just heard their CD "Put us in Tune" at the record store, and it was sounding awfully fine. No one there knew a thing about them other than the fact that they hail from the land of waffles. Allmusic says: Belgium's Thou mixes dreamy, dramatic pop with post-trip-hop beats. The six-piece group features vocalist/organist Does de Wolf, vocalist/guitarist Bart Vincent, guitarist Pim de Wolf, bassist Bart Depoortere, drummer Geert De Waegeneer, and arranger/sonic manipulator Hans Rabaey. The group's first two albums -- 1997's Une Poupee Pour M'amuser and 1998's Hello in This Sun led to comparisons to Bristol's pre-eminent trip-hop duo, Portishead, a connection that was reinforced on their third album and U.S. debut Put Us in Tune. The group recorded at Portishead's home studio, borrowing their discarded rhythm tracks for their own songs. PJ Harvey guitarist/producer John Parish, violinist Richard Hunt, Roni Size bassist Si John, and Belgian singer Mauro also collaborated on Put Us in Tune, which was released by SeeThru in early 2001. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide But what I heard didn't sound much like Portishead to me. More like recent blur if anything. Jones was a very popular female impersonator back in the '60s. Easiest place I know of to find him is the Monkees' film HEAD, where he plays the waitress in the studio canteen. (Better known as the "glass of cold gravy with a hair in it" scene.) This sounds to me like it's a version of an old Jim Backus record from the '50s called "Delicious," which is pretty much exactly the same thing.
