Ah, but I think all of these rhyme pet peeves should be taken in with a caveat - even if the rhyme (superficially) might be duff, it really depends on the song. For instance, I know that the "girl" / "world" rhyme was dropped by Big Star - "I'm in love with a girl / Prettiest (?) girl in the world". Whether, in that instance, it was meant as a rhyme, I can't say, but hey, let's not usher Mr. Chilton into the stocks for this. I think at least 3 Spinanes songs utilize the "fire" / "desire" rhyme as well. To paraphrase Alan Licht (via Run On's "Bring Her Blues") - tonight, and every night, it should be the song. This could be a given, though. And kudos to Aaron for the puzzle idea - if anything, it gives me something to ponder while I smack my brain against this dang Systems Analysis project I've been saddled with. project THIS, daver. http://www.popshots.org ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Mar 2001 16:02:06 -0800 From: "Andrew Hamlin" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] rhyme crime >To paraphrase Alan Licht (via Run On's "Bring Her Blues") - tonight, and every >night, it should be the song. I remember "Mammoth Gardens"'s onlist trouncing for the "and we danced/and danced/and danced/and danced" bit, and thought to myself, "Okay, nobody remembers the Hooters song people scarfed up like popcorn with exactly that same bit?" Closer to elitism >si vous prifirez<, a singer-songwriter much-loved onlist recently gave the world this chorus: "You do/you do/you do/You really do." I saw IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE last weekend, and quite liked it, but it's really really sad. It felt to me a lot like his earliest films, like DAYS OF BEING WILD; one review I read also pointed out an influence of Taiwanese films, especially those of Hou Hsiao-Hsien such as FLOWERS OF SHANGHAI. The production design is very nice and Maggie Cheung's costumes are breathtaking (as is she, both in her acting and in her appearance, enhanced by a tenderly lingering camera and a seemingly endless parade of gorgeous cheongsams - that classic tight Chinese dress with the side slits and high collar.) It's a typical Wong Kar-Wai film, emphasizing mood more than plot, and the mood is nostalgic and achingly sad. If you've seen his work before and liked it, I strongly recommend this one. Well, Brianna, I think you were actually the first to mention him by (however-disguised) name. If it only worked that way--I can think of lots of threads on lots of lists that I'd have loved to have stopped by simply hollering, "Hitler!" And FWIW, Jeff didn't compare the plight of Jews in WWII to Brianna's DJ friend's CD loss.
