I admit I was a bit skeptical when I saw the concept of the album. It is easy, I think, when basing your songs on other works, especially poetry, to be self-conscious and end up not sounding like yourself. Kris, however, makes these songs her own, though the words might have been written by someone else in a very different time. My favorite song might be the lead-off "Galuppi Baldessare" but there are several candidates. Who knew that songs based on the poetry of Byron, James Johnson, and e.e. cummings could sound like they belong together? Well, apparently Kris did! Congratulations to her on another fine album! Most of the songs sounded pretty great live (last week at the Tractor Tavern in Seattle). Actually, one of Kris' strong suits is that her voice can make anything sound great. And i just got home from the show in SF...with the full band...woo hoo! Everything sounded fabulous! Gotta admit, I think that's the "rockiest" I've every seen Kris play...lots of fun & the place was very full. She says this summer she'll start recording the second, more "traditional" batch of songs she's got ready to go...that were all gellin' together about the same time Strange Conversations was being birthed. Okay...off to bed. Stay tuned Davis & Santa Cruz & Santa Barbara...you're next! ;) Heather - --- Lightbox61@aol.com wrote: Most of the songs sounded pretty great live (last week at the Tractor Tavern in Seattle). MLN It may not always be easy, convenient, or politically correct to stand for truth and right, but it is the right thing to do. Always. M.
