My wife and I saw her last two shows in Bristol and Exeter: two more different venues you could not possibly imagine! The Bristol gig was in a church hall, attended by a folk-aware audience who very much enjoyed her entire headlining set, covering her career so far and also the range of songs she writes. She showcased some excellent new songs which she will be starting to record very soon. She also admitted to being rather apprehensive about her next gig. As we'd researched the venue in advance, we couldn't help but agree when we talked with her after her performance. The Exeter gig was in the aptly named Cavern Club, a small punk venue in the centre of town, mostly frequented by a student element. Hers was the third opening act; the other two were young, hard driven (though melodic) hard core rock acts who performed at volumes I've not heard at a concert in many years! Her set was expertly chosen under the circumstances though (excising the Hummingbirds and Moscow Songs in favour of East Of The Mountains and her edgier material), and she received an excellent response from an unlikely audience. She's due back in the UK following the release of her new CD (probably some time in May or June next year). Hopefully her profile is on the rise over here, and we'll see a lot more of her! (I live in Bristol, but I couldn't make the Bristol or Exeter shows.) She played in a smallish room beneath a smallish cafe. Despite my excitement at seeing "8-11pm" printed on the ticket, Kris only played for about an hour. The opening act started at 8.30, and by the time Kris took the stage at 9.30, the room (which would have been crowded with half as many people in it) had gotten very hot and stuffy, so by 10.30 she decided to "let us all go". Her set was excellent, though, and included a couple of requests and a few new songs. "Early Everlasting" is very, very cute - can't wait to hear that one recorded!
