I heard "You're No Train" and "Hummingbird" at past gigs and wanted them on CD back then. I'm holding off till her next gig solely in the hopes that the more CDs she sells at a gig will encourage her to come back sooner. :) But I do realize that probably has nothing whatsoever to do with it. Fortunately, the Jammin Java gig is less than a month away! Sorry to rub it in... ;) Got to catch a couple of shows 'round here. First was at Henfling's, a biker bar in the Santa Cruz Mountains. A great kickback & relaxed venue with some great music that tours through there...I think it's become one of Catie Curtis' favorite spots too! Anyway, I digress...Kris played two shows in Henfling's on successive nights. I only was able to see the second show on the 17th. Jabe Beyer opened, and for those of you in the Boston area, sounds like you probably have had the chance to see this guy before...I'd never really heard him. He's pretty good solo, but I have to admit I liked him much better when he worked with Kris. "He's played on every one of my cd's and I'm on his", says Kris. Found out who's blows the mean harp! Obviously, she's promoting "Hurricane", so the first half of the set is almost every song off the album, then she shifted into some oldies, but goodies. Sorry I didn't take notes on the set list, but I remember the mix included Little Wings, Broken White Line, Red Herring, Honeyed Out and her sister Jen came up and harmonized on Words Fail You. The funny thing was to close the encore, Jabe and she made a pact the night before that they'd close each show from there on out with a different Billy Joel song. Of course, they only allowed themselves a few minutes to learn the song too! This night, it was Only The Good Die Young. The only disappointment was I expected to see a few more folks. I guess they all showed up the first night. A friend of mine held up her phone during one song and the crowd cheer sounded lively and enthusiastic. I think our crowd was a little more tired and reserved. I was supposed to help sell product, but it wasn't a tough job with the relatively small crowd. Kris did unveil her new piece of merchandise...yup, Kris now has a t-shirt. But mind you...it's organic cotton, sweat shop free, made in the USA and screened in Santa Cruz non-commercialized and stress free t-shirt to buy!! ;) Then she played to a SRO crowd at the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley...great show! She had several family and friends in the audience. Pretty much the same set list, but she didn't ask for requests this time! Actually, the chit chat was cut back a bit by both of them and they put on the "just crank out the tunes for the big show" kind of gig. There were a couple of tell-stories-while-you-tune kinds of things, but nothing that really stood out different. But hey, I wasn't there to hear stories anyway, right? ; ) This time I got to sit in the "sound sweet spot"...wishing I had the gadgets to make a boot, because this would have been a great one! Thoroughly enjoyable shows with all the cute smiles, laughs and charms that are Kris. Wish I was a little more energy-juiced to fully enjoy, but that's kind of the space I was in because of everything else in life, not the show. She played Eugene Or last night, and then Portland and Seattle on her way up to Alaksa for several shows...very cool! (ha ha, no pun intended!) So, come on y'all...haven't really heard a whole lot about shows on this tour...step it up up there in the Northwest, k? ; ) be well, y'all, Heather Help Take Back Our Country!
