I'd been told this tour would be with a 3 piece band, but it was just Kris and guitarist Jabe Beyer, who plays on some of the tracks on Songs For A Hurricane. At showtime, attendance looked abysmally low. Jabe started around 15 minutes later, and more people filtered in during his set. Total attendance appeared to end up being around 30, well below her April appearance at a different local venue. Kris's manager speculated, and it makes sense, that the April crowd included a fair number of college students who have probably not yet gotten back to town for the Fall semester/quarter. Jabe opened with a 20-25 minute set, joined by Kris for the last few songs. After a break, they returned for Kris' set. Beginning with Waiting Under The Waves, Kris did most of the songs from Hurricane in order -- which, I imagine, is being done because the songs are a cycle - -- a relationship from beginning to end and beyond. Kris then asked if anyone had any requests. When no one called anything out, I broke the silence with a request for Broken White Line. It was cool to have Kris respond so favorable to that request, but even cooler to hear half of the room seem to audibly indicate their agreement with the request. I guess I broke the ice -- I break a lot of things -- because what followed was a number of requests being called out. After playing BWL, they did four or five songs -- most of the other requests, as well as a great performance of I Still Miss Someone as a tribute to Johnny Cash, who had died that morning. Kris was in fine vocal form -- is she ever NOT? -- and as personable and engaging as ever. Hearing her in concert again, less than 5 months after hearing her the first time, just served to confirm my opinion that she's about as good as it gets -- as a songwriter of melodies AND lyrics, and as a vocalist. Her voice, and her style -- especially her lack of contrived vocal mannerisms and affectations -- is my favorite among female vocalists of the past 25 years. I'm not -- at all -- a fan of the females (or males) whose style is contrived. Kris just sings -- with genuine feeling. Needless to say, I'm a big fan.
