Did Kris mention what songs will be on the upcoming CD? I am so looking forward to hearing it. What's the procedure for actually making sure a post goes to everyone -- do I have to add the list address each time? * Then, I got Barb's post as both a direct email as well as a list post - -- two copies As I was typing this, having replied to Tim's email, he wrote back to say that he'd...uh...messed up (or something like that), and accidentally wrote directly vs. posting So, I guess my question is: * To reply to a post with a post (vs. a backchannel/direct reply), I assume I should hit Reply All? But since doing so apparently generates a reply that will go to the previous poster twice, is there a way to not double up -- other than removing the persons address from the "To" section of the reply? Thanks for your patience as I learn the system. I'm used to email lists (such as Yahoo Groups) that are set so that your reply goes only to the list, unless you specifically address it to an individual. I'll answer Barb's question as well as I can -- given my preior lack of familiarity with Kris -- in a separate post to follow. Barb, is there any way to set the admin files so that replies automatically to go the whole list UNLESS you want them just to go to the original poster? All this other lists I'm on, including the ones I run (Richard Shindell, Dave-and-Tracy) are set up to do that. This is the only list I know that's set up this way, and as a discussion list, it might facilitate more group discussion to set it up so it's easier for people to reply to the whole list. Well, I can only tell you about the San Diego one, but I'll do my best. Let me start by saying that I actually went for Mark Erelli, to review his performance for FolkWax magazine (FolkWax.com) I didn't know, until that morning, that Mark wasn't headlining. Having attended three recent folk concerts that were varying degress of disappointment to me (including the last one at the same venue -- disappointing mainly due to the fact that the performance of a local, and mediocre, performer -- and an apparent need to put on more locals later -- relegated Jeffrey Foucault to a 30 minute set) I feared that this would be another disappointment, with Mark playing a shorter set due to the fact that there was both a "local" opener and a headliner of whom I'd not heard. The opener WAS, by my tastes, a waste of time. My preference runs to "real" people, not characters that people have created for themselves. This guy, whose very name is clearly a creation, was just too much -- too much (pseudo) spacy/mystically/Zen/Native American creation. His guitar "stylings" are of the "Wow, can't I play well!?!?!?!" variety -- the style that favors technical ability over musicality. I could name names, but I imagine you all know people like the kind I mean. The best news of hearing him is that, after all these years, I've finally come up with a name to describe this phenomenon: (instru)mental masterbation. As far as his lyrics: grab a dictionary and look up "pretentious". Then, after a short break, came the always-engaging Mark Erelli. A nicer guy would, it seems, be hard to find. We'd had a pleasant, brief visit earlier, and his 30+ minute set was very enjoyable. I guess, after wasting so much time pontificating as I just did, I should let the previous few sentences summarize my impression of Mark, and get right to Kris. WOW! I am NOT a fan of female singer-songwriters as a rule -- Joni's move to jazz signalled the end of great female folkies, as far as I'm concerned. That's not to say that there aren't plenty of good ones with some great songs, but -- for me -- that's the exception rather than the rule. Within a few seconds, Kris made me think that 20+ year streak was in danger of ending. Within a few songs, I was convinced. After around an hour, I turned to my friend and whispered "Is she EVER going to do something that's less than GREAT?!?!?!". After ANOTHER 30+ minutes, when her generous performance had ended, I was still waiting. Accompanied by Mark, who added very tasteful fills and leads, as well as terrific vocal accompaniment, Kris played 90 minutes of mostly original songs, not one of which was less than excellent. The covers they did were equally great, with a Louvin Brothers song causing me to think that Kris and Mark should do a CD of Everly Brothers songs (although this particular Louvin Brothers song has apparently not been done by Don and Phil). Kris opened with a couple of new songs, an unidentified one that immediately told me that she was something special, followed by Bobby Lee. By now, I was sold -- and then came Broken White Line. I should also say that, by this time, I loved her personality -- and was also thinking that, despite what Mark was contributing, she was clearly capable of playing the guitar well enough to hold me as a solo performer. After these few songs, what was clear was that this was a person who knew how to write excellent melodies. First time, live performance exposure to new songs isn't the best way to know if the lyrics are good (or great), but -- as evidenced by the first performer of the night -- it IS a way to expose shortcomings in that area. Kris had exposed no shortcomings, lyrically or any other way. Soon I began to wonder what I'd say to her after the concert -- what to compliment/praise first, and how to not sound like a smitten teenager. How can you NOT talk about her voice? -- but the greater compliment would be to praise her songs. What's a guy to do? So, after listening and loving it for an hour and a half, and then waiting while a couple of women talked with her (for what seemed like an eternity), I introduced myself and, I'm sure, babbled like an idiot. Probably like one of those TV sketches in which the goofy guy finally works up the courage to talk to the prom queen, only to stammer and stutter and drool (I think I managed to not drool) like the complete loser that he is. Did she scream and run away, or maybe call security? Nah, she couldn't have been sweeter. Given my age, she probably knew she was safe, and that she could always outrun me. So, finally drawing this long ramble to an end (it's probably so long that it'll have to go to the moderator for approval, based in the list rules I read;-) I'll close by saying a few things: * WOW (yes, I can somethimes be redundant, saying thngs more than once [yes, that was an intentional example]) * Please forgive the person who only gave Five Stories a rating of "6" in FolkWax. Everyone makes mistakes. The good news is that the Reader Rating is "9", showing that sometimes the pros don't know it all * If you subscribe to FolkWax, count on a review of the concert to appear either this week or next. It'll probably look very much like the second half of this post (I'm not only redundant, I'm lazy) * I also hope to do a feature or a feature/interview on Kris in the next few months, maybe midway between now and the expected August release of her upcoming CD -- and then a review of the new CD. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Apr 2003 12:16:25 -0700 From: Carey Driscoll Subject: little-wings: Re: BTW.....it appears as though both Beth and Julia have their computer clocks set to the wrong time zone. I hope everyone understands that, just because I have an opinion, even *I* don't necessarily think it's an accurate one:-) It's just that, with limited time and money, my exposure is necessarily limited, and I haven't been very impressed by the females I've heard. Not that a lot of males -- including ones with lots of fans -- have impressed me all that much, either. But the ratio is, for me, much higher in the male singer-songwriter category. Thanks for confirming that the absence of archived recent posts IS simply that there've been no recent posts. Since you asked so nicely... :-) I saw Kris in Ithaca last weekend. This was the third time I'd seen her at Juna's, and each time has been more packed than the last. I sat in a plastic patio chair along a side wall and felt lucky considering all the people who stood standing the whole night. People were sitting on every bit of open floor space, as well. The crowd was definitely festive and excited. Kris was joined that night by Steve Mayone - what a great pairing. Here's the set list: Waiting (or is it Wading?) Under the Waves Bobby Lee Broken White Line Cluck Old Hen You're No Train (Kris and Steve seemed to do an extended guitar interlude at the end, compared to other times I've heard her play this. It was *very* lovely.) At this point Kris laughed about turning the night into a strip tease as she took off her wide leather belt with its many metal grommets. She said it sounded like "we were all on a ship or something" as her guitar kept hitting the metal. She then said her pants would probably come next, now that she didn't have the belt to hold them up. East of the Mountains Juice in June (or is it Juice and June?) Weatherman (Kris played this more slowly than I'd heard before, making it moodier and more poignant than usual) Mary Lou cover of "Hold On" by Tom Waits Hummingbird Yellow Brick Road cover of Anna Lee by The Resophonics a song she said she'd written just a day or two before (maybe about letting go, but I didn't catch all the lyrics due to the chattering people sitting on the floor at my feet) North Dakota (in the wrong key, then the right one) Janet the Pig (a song Kris used to sing long ago, by request from the "old-timers" in the crowd - Steve was *amazing* accompanying her on a song he'd never heard before) Sink or Swim Honeyed Out a little detour where Kris talked about how she loved to call the presidential comment line, and how it's "like leaving a message with George's roommate" Little Wings Encore Words Fail You (by unanimous audience request, thankfully. I'd requested it before the show but somehow they overlooked it, distracted as they were by the Janet the Pig request) Red Herring (because she couldn't end the show on that down note) I had to leave right when the show ended, and it took forever to get down the stairs with all the people there. The energy in the room the whole night was amazing, though, and it was obvious Kris was having a great time. Oh, as other people have posted, she said the new album will be out August 19th.
