I had a chance to speak to him at both shows I attended and he was a really nice guy and seemed to be well grounded. I would recommend his music to anyone that has an interest in country/folk/bluesy/singer-songwriter genres. His tastes are almost as eclectic as mine (being that I can go from Kris to Live to Mark to Tool and then to Jewel like nothing). But I would like to recommend one artist that I'm sure 99% of you all haven't heard yet. His name is Greg Boerner and he plays out around Chicagoland and Wisconsin areas alot. He is a little more old-school blues/country than Mark is, but this guy can tear it up on guitar. All of his shows are solo (him and the guitar) and like Kris and Mark, he's one of the nicest guys you'll meet. You can check out his web site at www.gregboerner.com and also check out his music there. (Take a listen to "Wishing Well," and "Thing of Her Own." Both are awesome!) Funny thing though, I wrote to Kris not too long ago asking for any recommendations for music, and she recommended Jabe (www.jabe.net), Deb Talan (www.debtalan.com), and also Patty Larkin (whom I had never heard of). But coming up in April Greg Boerner just so happens to be opening for Patty Larkin in my town! Freaky Coincedence. Anyhow... Now I'm just waiting til Kris comes back to town. Arg... Have a great day! VERY poetic and an awesome storyteller :) so...your turn. who and why are you into lately? ~tim ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Mar 2002 09:43:41 EST From: Lightbox61@aol.com Subject: little-wings: Re: Other Artists Check out Jonathan Kingham (cd Hardwood Floors) who co-wrote "take my ashes" with Mark Erelli and who is the only person I've ever sing that song, and Holly Figueroa (cd Dream in Red) who founded Indiegrrl (www.indiegrrl.com)--a website where you will discover many many talented artists. "fireflies" and "paper wings and halo" are my favorite if you're looking for song recommendations. she's right up kris' genre, and don't quote me on this but i'm almost 100% sure that they have worked together. actually, i know that they both contributed to the RESPOND cd. and you know what, i just checked "5 Stories" and lori contributed vocals, so they've definately worked together. another great singer is susan wearner. she's got this awesome voice..."Live at Tin Angel" is a great cd - it's got "last of the good straight girls" which is one of my favorites. it's got some pretty funny lines in it that remind me of dar williams (who should be a strong hold in your folk collection). lastly, i'll recommend a group. Eddie From Ohio is absolutely fabulous. i can't wait to see them preform this year at Falcon Ridge. I should cut this email off now, hope you all enjoy the picks :) - -chrissy _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Mar 2002 12:20:53 EST From: TkleMeCher@aol.com Subject: Re: little-wings: off topic: new artists Ok...i'm being pulled from lurking mode too. Good job, Tim. I totally agree with Deb Talan. She's an amazing songwriter. Although i haven't seen the band yet, I'll be making it out to see her on Friday. I've also been wrapped up in Live From New York. If you haven't seen them, do try to. Sam Shaber, Andrew Kerr, Teddy Goldstein, Anne Heaton, and Edie Carey are great on their own and even more amusing together. If you check out any of their websites you'll find a link to the LFNY page. If anyone is in the area of southeastern MA, Teddy Goldstein is playing at this cute little venue in Marion, MA, on Saturday, March 23. It was a free show last time he was here but i can't promise you its free again. Check www.hardware-cafe.com for details. On top of that, I've been ryan cohen's latest hostage. Check out my webpage, ryancohenfan.com or his official site ryan-cohen.com. He's a younger artist out of the philly area and a real talent. I'll be seeing Edie Carey again this Sunday and love Anne Heaton's music too, she has a great new CD "Black Notebook" just out last month. Someone who is more unknown, at least to anyone not in the midwest, is Brenda Weiler. She is based out of Minneapolis right now, so has only done a couple small east coast tours. She has a great voice and I love her lyrics...although her stage presence is nothing like Kris's, but who's is!! She'll be opening for Dar at a couple Minnesota shows. http://www.peppermintcds.com/Brenda.html She has another web site, but it's down right now..... www.brendaweiler.com Another artist I really like, but isn't "new" is Patty Griffin. Her new CD is coming out in April, after a huge mess with her old record company left her last CD unreleased. Just another reason to be thankful Kris has her own label :-) As for Lori McKenna, I'm surprised Tim hasn't replied to that post!! Kris and Lori have certainly performed together (Kris opened for Lori's CD release show a year ago), in fact they have an in-store together next week. She is awesome. Off the top of my head, I have seen two shows that Lori and Kris co-headlined - one upstairs at the Middle East and one at Sanders Theater (along with Jess Klein). Speaking of Jess, she is also up there on my list of favorite artists. I've been seeing a lot of Meg Toohey shows lately (I love living in Boston!). Depending on the venue and who she's playing with, Meg can be anywhere from folkie to Rock Star. Her album Eight So Low is acoustic stuff, while Romantic Blunder #4 is with her band. Melissa Ferrick is another amazing artist. If you ever get a chance to see her live, go! In fact, check out her website because she is going on tour with a soon-to-be-released new album. What an amazing voice, and song-writing to match! I'm also in love with Erin McKeown, especially after seeing her perform live with Voices on the Verge. Her music is unique and fresh, and she has a great stage presence. And you gotta love the outfits :-) An artist I've recently been introduced to and I don't have enough words of praise for is Kasey Chambers. She's from Australia, and her music is a mix of folk, country, and bluegrass. Her voice is just amazing, and her songs are full of emotion and wonderful lyrics. She's a must-have for any fans of artists like Lucinda Williams or Emmylou Harris. I would also like to give everyone a heads-up about an awesome internet live streaming radio station that is dedicated to playing indie female musicians. It's a great way to be introduced to lots of new artists that you probably won't ever hear on commercial radio, and to listen to some old favorites. The name of the site is www.michal.com. Yes yes yes :) Deb Talan rocks too. Deb's speaking voice is HORRIBLE as she sounds like a 4 year old (she helps a daycare out all the time, so she must get confused or something! haha!) but her singing voice is AWESOME! :) very heavenly. and her guitar chords will send any player in a tizzy. i LONG to be able to play stuff like her. Hmm...what else? Pretty much cross reference this with Sharon's post as I follow her steadfastedly around the world wide web :) I wonder how she'd react if i _didn't_ email her so much?! hahaha But yay for some more new stuff to sample :) I'm quite fond of folk and all it's stylings and love giving people a whirl. The artist I've found MOST to be like Kris would be Patty Griffin, tho. they sing VERY much the same. and with the same themes. Patty is a tad louder but still with JUST AS MUCH SOUL. :) my mom told me today that Patty is like the female Ellis Paul and if you really listen to some stuff, I totally agree. Download "Never Get What You Want" by Patty Griffin and then download "All Things Being The Same" by Ellis Paul and you can see how much they share themes. They're friends though so I guess that would be why :) My dream would be to have Patty Griffin sing on Kris's next cd. wouldn't that be AWESOME, Shar? both of them together and in harmony! :) wow! a duet would be even cooler but possibly too much to wish for. lemme go before i can't stop speaking. ~tim ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Mar 2002 16:36:37 -0800 From: "iocane powder" Subject: little-wings: in my CD player So this is my first post to the list.
