Fleischmann" ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 9 Oct 2001 07:32:03 -0700 (PDT) From: Becky Rickert Subject: Kris...of course :-) Hey all, I'm new to this list, however it seems it has been rather quiet the last week or so. I figure Kris's return to New England will jump start some discussion fairly soon. Anyway, I saw Kris play in Ann Arbor last Friday in a small church with fabulous acustics. There were probably 25 people in attendance. Some times it pays to be stuck in the mid-west. I don't remember much of the set list (never very good at those things), but I"ll try and reconstruct as much as possible: Open Road Marylou Garden Rose Damn Love Song North Dakota Broken White Line Cluck Old Hen Weatherman Lullaby 101 (I know I'm missing a bunch...but that's all I can come up with at the moment) // Words fail you Honey-out ("a song with words that are not very churchy and certainly not lady like") I know I saw someone booting the show...so if you're out there...e-mail me privately, I would love to trade for a copy. :-) I bought her new CD at the show and completely fell in love with it. If you don't have it. Get it. I envy those of you in Boston who get to her play on a more regular basis. Post reviews please! Hope all is well with everyone...have a fabulous day! :-) ~Becky NEW from Yahoo! I saw 3 shows in a row last week!!! Kris's Iowa shows, first ever, were amazing. Since she was the only act she did 2 sets both nights. Grinnell Iowa 10-2-01 Set One yellow brick road - moscow song - cluck old hen - mary lou - weatherman - north dakota - open road - little wings - honeyed out Set Two broken white line - red herring - short work - words fail you - somewhere trouble don't go (Julie Miller) - gravity - sleeping dogs An incredible show....since she had never played in Iowa she told her great stories including her blues lovin chicken twitching-cluck old hen, friend's trip to SF-open road, mom's over enthusiasm-north dakota and little sister getting dumped-short work. It was so funny! The next night in Iowa City was just as good, maybe even better. It was a little coffee house with everyone there just to see Kris, you could hear a pin drop! I didn't get the first part of the first set, just remember she started with garden rose and yellow brick road and later did damn love song - north dakota - gravity - little wings Set Two open road - weatherman - short work - joni mitchell cover - sleeping dogs - somewhere trouble don't go - honeyed out - lullaby 101 encore - words fail you - mean old wind. Not a lot of stories but lots of talking about being on the road and her impressions of Iowa. She sang the Joni Mitchell song because she heard it on the radio, one of the few times she got a clear station in. Said she used to sing it so it was fate that she do it that night. If anyone knows what Joni song she used to cover let me know since I don't know any. The last show (Chicago 10-4-01) was the shortest of all, only 9 songs :-( But she finally sang The Train YEAH I had requested it the previous two nights, so she must have felt sorry for me finally! yellow brick road - the train - cluck old hen - mary lou - broken white line - lullaby 101 - weatherman - little wings - honeyed out Uncommon Ground is a pretty noisy place, with dishes clanging and some talking, so not the best place to see Kris. It still is so much better than not being able to see her at all though :-) so I can't really compain that much. She tried to get the song on, but it just didn't fit. We'll have to settle for live performances to hear that one for now. It's one of my favorites too. ~Becky - --- Elizabeth Lerner wrote: > why isn't marylou on the new cd? it's simply the > best song ever...other songs from oddlot are there, > why not marylou? on the otherhand, lullaby 101 makes > me cry every time i hear it. which would be a lot > more if my cd player weren't broken. and yellow bri > ck road sounds so damn pretty, i like how it sounds > almost live. just thought i'd share some random kris > comments. > > -elizabeth Make a great connection at Yahoo! I must say, I'm a bit envious! - I went to college in Iowa (at Grinnell! I practically LIVED in Bob's coffeehouse :)) and good musicians NEVER really came to our campus. In fact, Iowa isn't really a heavily traveled state for much of anything :) And now that I'm not there anymore it seems they're getting some great people to go play there. I'm looking forward to Kris's return to the East coast though! Can't wait to hear what lovely things she'll play when she gets to Mass. Did anyone happen to get a recording of the Grinnell show? BTW, the rendition of Yellow Brick Road is REALLY growing on me from the new CD. At first I had the "I heard the upbeat one first so I liked it better" syndrome, but I have to say, it's a close call now which I like better. They're both great in their own ways! Fleischmann" Subject: Ann Arbor Show (10/5) RESEND I was thrilled to attend Kris's show at the Greenwood Coffeehouse last Friday evening (the same show about which Becky just posted), and continue to be severely blissed out. The Greenwood is small venue in a local Unitarian Church: the performance space has very nice acoustics and full glass walls revealing the wooded lot behind the performer. With the evening's rain audible in the background, Kris described it as "a great place to sing mopey love songs." No bar noise and no basement cinderblock: I'm glad to have finally visited this smaller space for those performers who are not yet ready to be booked at the Ark. I was a little disappointed at the turnout, but recognize that this is the first time Kris has played Ann Arbor Last May she opened for Brooks Williams in Lansing. She's also played in Flint in that tour and the night following this show; I'm hopeful she's developing a following there. Between sets I overheard Kris talking to two groups of recent Boston transplants who were among the couple dozen attending, so the crowd wasn't *entirely* unfamiliar with Kris's work, but I think there was a general first-encounter wariness in the audience's early response. Becoming comfortable in the face of that initial wariness must be dificult for performers. Missing from Becky's explicitly abbreviated set-list were (in no order) Little Wings Yellow Brick Road Moscow song Sleeping Dogs (prefaced with a story about the 8-wk old kitten at the house where she was staying on one of her recent nights in Iowa; Kris had to barricade herself into the guest room with her suitcase and guitar because otherwise the kitten would burst down the door: "Dogs wouldn't do that.") A Julie Miller cover A new untitled song (which she hesitantly labelled "Train Song" though I'd suggest "You're no train") (Hmmm... Cluck Old Hen, Little Wings, Sleeping Dogs, Red Herring, Mos-Cow Song: maybe Kris *is* ready to play the Ark.) btw: Kevin McCarthy just posted this glowing review of _Five_Stories_ to the Folk_Music Digest http://www.surfnetusa.com/celtic-folk/fr-KrisDelmhorst.htm (More info about Folk_Music Digest: http://grassyhill.org/mailman/listinfo/folkmusic) Best, >>Bill ------------------------------ End of little-wings-digest V3 #58 *********************************
