She played a short set, Short Work, Little Wings, Broken White Line, and two others that I've forgotten. She was backed by two other musicians and kept it rocking. But the CD looks beautiful -- in a cardboard case this time, not a jewel case. Kris said she worked on the design with a friend of hers (it's credited to Charlie "the bubble" Palantino), and it's truly great. The cover has photos of the old Steel Pier in Atlantic City taken decades ago by Kris's great uncle, wonderful warm, sepia-toned photographs of a tightrope walker and other scenes on the pier where the famous diving horses used to perform. Inside, there is a full-color booklet with the lyrics and more contemporary photos of Kris performing, still lifes of instruments and some other scenes. As for the music, well, it's awesome to hear the songs that Kris has been playing in her live shows, but with full arrangements and backing vocals -- they all sound so lush and rich, with a subtle added dimension that takes them to a new place. The only song that I don't think she's performed live is "Just What I Meant," which is moody and plaintive and includes a saxophone riff in the middle of the song (something quite different). Here's the complete track list: Cluck Old Hen Damn Love Song Broken White Line Little Wings Words Fail You Just What I Meant Yellow Brick Road Garden Rose Mean Old Wind Honeyed Out Gave It Away Lullaby 101 Oh, and there's a short bonus track, a little bit of psychedelia , but I won't completely spoil it for you here. I imagine it will be available on her site in the next couple of days. And for all you New Yorkers who didn't come out last night, you missed your chance to be among the first to get the CD!
