My friend Amber and I were up by seven thirty. We took one wrong exit on our way from Burnsville (we drove up the day before -- we were one mile from Woolstock, Chris -- and stayed there the night of the 20th) to Shakopee, but we got back on track easily enough and were in line by nine. A Minnesota radio station had set up camp and were giving away free juice, water, and bagels. They were playing crappy music, but food is food. I saw Shannon, an internet friend of at least two years, immediately, but it took me awhile to get up the guts to go over there (she's so scary, I tell you). Eventually I did and we talked for a long time, it was pretty cool. :) At noon the radio station gave away subs but they'd run out of stuff to drink -- I emptied my juice bottle and filled it with melting ice from the cooler. It was already hot. Some people from the station were running contests and spraying us with squirt guns -- well, actually, one guy from the station sprayed all the giggling little girls... I'll skip the waiting cuz not much happened. At about one oclock they told us they'd be letting us through the main gates early. At twenty to two some movement sparked everyone to pick up their blankets and pack their stuff up and cram into somewhat of a line. I'm not sure what time it was when we finally got through. We got free stuff, um, trying to remember... some Biore stuff, a free CD, a beach ball. I bought a Tshirt and a postcard book. We ran through this big ol' building (air conditioned -- nice, Amber and I were practically dehydrating) and out back, where they proceeded to make us wait again because the vendors, etc, weren't ready for us yet. We didn't get into the actual park until three thirty. I can't run very fast but we had to compete with everyone else for a close-to-the-stage spot so I told Amber to make a break for it and I'd catch up. We did end up getting really close. There were A LOT Of people there. :) At three thirty I went in search of a tie-dyed shirt with pathways written on the front that I'd heard about, but I never did find it. I returned to our spot with two bottled waters (even tho while I was out I'd already drank two Mt. Dews) but the water was *warm.* Amber took her turn out, and I went looking for that shirt again at four thirty. I was coming back from the bathrooms when I walked by the Bstage where N'Dea Davenport was playing... and all of a sudden she brought out Sarah McLachlan and Joan Osborne! I made a mad dash for the stage and ended up right against the stage, right in front of Sarah. I kept thinking how I didn't have my camera, and Amber was missing it!! They sang one song, and it was sooooo cool. After that I went back to our spot. That was the end of the wandering because I knew if I left again I'd never get back. It was after five and getting packed. I was disappointed that I didn't get to look at all of the vendors -- I didn't even get a stack of those free postcards -- but when there's only two people you can't go look at everything and leave your friend alone in the crowd. I can't tell you how hot it was. IT WAS SO HOT. And Amber and I were so thirsty for something cold. From five on we were drinking warm mineral water, and it wasn't very good -- but it was wet. First was Lisa Loeb. She had a really good set -- Stay was what I really wanted to hear and she sang it. Joan Osborne was next and she was amazing. At the end of "One of Us" we were screaming and she held her finger to her mouth -- "shhhhhhhh" -- and altered a line from "'Cept for the pope maybe in Rome," to "'Cept for the Pope when she's in Rome," and we went absolutely crazy. Joan sang a few songs from her upcoming album and let me tell you something -- I am DEFINITELY BUYING IT. She mentioned that there were 35,000 people there. I noticed that whenever a new artist came out on stage, they looked pretty overwhelmed by the crowd. Natalie Merchant came out on the stage and danced around a bit, which was cool. Someone sang a duet with Sarah, Joan or Lisa or maybe even Paula, but I can't remember which it was. The sun was finally starting to set. We were being buzzed by planes trailing messages from every radio station in Minnesota (I swear) welcoming Lilith Fair '98. And some helicopter kept flying by, real low. Taking pictures, I assume. I was fully prepared to be completely bored through Paula Cole because I don't like her. Well, I didn't. I was completely shocked by her. I mean, I was speechless after her performance, literally. The songs they play on the radio so much do her absolutely no justice. She was AMAZING in concert. She was singing that cowboy song and she said the line "I will wash the dishes while you go have a beer," or something like that and made like she was flipping the guy off. She danced around and pounded the base drum and did that really cool rap thing that she does. I mean, here I am, yawning while she comes on stage and people start screaming, but she put on one hell of a show, and when I say that, you know it's true. Cool lighting helped. Natalie Merchant was next. I have to admit I was kinda disappointed with her set. She said we seemed to be in a good mood, and we screamed out our answer, and then she mentioned that it was kind of hard to be in a good mood when America was bombing other countries -- trick question, dammit. After depressing us a bit with that, she sang maybe two songs, then got on the piano and tried to do two other songs but said she couldn't do it. She sang a duet with N'Dea Davenport. She sang thank you and Sarah came out to sing with her and it was really really a good ending to the set, but I was still bothered by the fact that Natalie was so upset. She has a beautiful voice and I was looking forward to hearing her show it off a bit. I don't even think her set lasted the full 50 minutes. Finally came Sarah. I was completely in awe. My legs were tired and my back ached and my face and arms were burnt to a crisp and I was hot and sweaty and dehydrated and my throat was raw from screaming, but I could have stayed and listened to Sarah all night. She is so, so wonderful. I remember she said Ice Cream and Possession and Building a Mystery and Angel and did a duet of Elsewhere with Paula Cole. And Black and White. Adia was the encore, as well as all the artists coming back out (minus Joan, she must have left already) to sing another song, I'd never heard it before. I was depressed that I was seeing Sarah AGAIN without the boy with the Pathways shirt, but I didn't want to let it ruin the show. When Sarah was thanking crew and artists and stuff, she started singing Thank You, and when she found out she was in the wrong key, she laughed -- she sings when she laughs, even! Oh, it was so awesome. Finally, reluctantly, the show was over and the crowd started to leave. It took a long time to get out of the actual park area -- for some reason they weren't letting us out (after they spent all day not letting us *in*) then we finally got out and to the car. We had planned on waiting until the parking lot cleared a bit, but then changed our minds and decided to just get in line. It took forever to get back out onto normal roads (that little scenic route that takes you from Canterbury Rd. to the actual concert area moved slower than ... something really slow :P) but then we got going in the wrong direction... We knew something was up when we went by ValleyFair, since we hadn't come IN by ValleyFair. We had to get on 101 or 169 or something, and when we finally found an exit to take us there, we found out we'd gotten on *past* the exit we needed to get OFF on to take us back to Burnsville. So we got on it and went all the way to a stoplight and pulled a U-turn, came back, found our exit. We were just entering Burnsville when Amber said she was hungry for a CHEESBURGER. 12:15 and she wants a cheeseburger. So we stopped and got her a cheeseburger. I got apple juice -- I've never had better tasting apple juice in my life. Cold, wet apple juice... This morning we left the hotel and nine and drove back here... five hour drive when you're already dead tired and don't even want to leave anyway because there's that unfinished business. Add to that car troubles, heavy rains, gravel trucks throwing rocks that put cracks in your windshield, and smelly garbage awaiting you when you open the door to your three-days-vacant house. But from five-fourty PM till eleven... that made it ALL worth it. On a side note, any Shakopee Lilith-ers who might happen to remember the bitchy lawn chair ladies from last year, they were back!! I wasn't behind them but I saw them. I *was,* however, behind the bitchy lawn chair lady trainees. Two mothers, two daughters. Four lawnchairs and more moving/breathing space than any one else at the whole concert. They girls argued with their mothers and downed at least two bottles of Tylenol the whole night because they complained of headaches. They didn't want to be there, I could tell. They sat down through almost everyone because they were bored. THe mothers were really into the music. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. I hope those lovely people are on this list. Can anyone confirm the rumor that Sarah will not headline the tour next year because of her and Ash's wishes to start a family?
