I'm gonna do a huge write-up thing with tons of details but for now I just wanna tell everyone I've never had more fun or met nicer ppl in my life :) thanx to everyone who made my nite special, I luv yous all! :) I have a request for all you on fte: Sadly, I'm not on the list due to overwhelming mail but I met some great ppl from FTE last nite that I didn't get a chance to say goodbye to :( So if someone could pass this along to Kristen and Nicole from Conneticut, I'd love to have their email addys....also, the fumbler sign that Jess spoke about *waves to Jess--great meeting you!!!* was MINE! :D me and two of my friends made it and wrote a big SARAH on one side and "Fumblers love you" and "with love from Ottawa" on the other....Kris held it up cuz she was closer than us and we asked her to try and give it to Sarah but I don't think she got the chance....oh yeah, as far as I could see, the amount of glowstix in the audience during Witness was pathetic :p But hey, me and Jess had matching ones!! :) *waves to Jess again for throwing one at Sarah* :D Also, MY quote is in the paper this morning!!! The article on Lilith in the arts section of the citizen today...they quoted my friend Angel but said she was a 17 year old vocal student at Canterbury when in fact she's a 15 year old drama student....oh well, my quote was at the end of the article "Everybody's just so talented, how could you not want to go?" :) BIG LONG REVIEW TO COME! fte-ers, pleeeeeeezzzzze pass this along! :) Thanx, luv, hugz, and one of those dazes you get when you're overtired, Shawna =) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe lilith-fair-fans - -or-- unsubscribe lilith-fair-fans-digest ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Aug 1998 13:28:26 PDT From: "Shawna Caspi" Subject: [lilith-fair-fans] *BIG LONG LONG LONG* Lilith review!!!!!! Well, I've been good about the crossposting for awhile, but this is an exception :) *warning: this is long* I wrote it for myself in diary form so don't worry if you don't recognize the names. But FTE-ers!!! If you could give Kris and Nicole my email addy that would rock!! LILITH FAIR ’98!!!!!! FRIDAY, AUGUST 14, 1998 LANSDOWNE PARK Breathe. That’s what I had to keep telling myself to do for fear of collapsing with excitement at Lilith Fair yesterday. This review is long, personal and detailed, but that’s how I like ‘em. First things first: Instead of having the fun of sleeping over at Lansdowne to get a great spot in line, I was stuck with my whiny ten year-old campers last nite at camp. My face, after being painted with lipstick by these ten year-olds, scrubbed clean with pool water, and burnt to a crisp by the sun, had blistered over and I couldn’t move it. But that didn’t bother me, I counted down the seconds until two o’clock, when they were letting me escape from camp. When the hour came, I grabbed my stuff, jumped into the car and at the same time, managed to change my clothes. I sat impatiently in the car groaning at how all the roads in the Glebe seemed to be "conveniently" closed just to piss me off. But we finally reached Lansdowne. I started the search down the line for my friends. I started at the end and walked all the way to the front to find them right at the beginning of the line!!!!!! Well, not *right* at the front cuz Nicole (fellow Raspberry Swirl Girl) and Kris of FTE had come from Connecticut and slept in the parking lot. I met all the great people Angel, Tash and Leanna had made friends with since eight o’clock that morning and waited excitedly for half an hour for the doors to open. A writer from the Citizen came to talk to us and got quotes from Kris, Angel (although they said she was a 17 year old vocal student :p) and *ME* my quote was "Everyone here’s just so talented, how could you not want to go?" J The doors opened and Nicole got in first so she ran to the main stage to save spots for us. The security guards didn’t even check our bags!!! If I had known, I would’ve brought water! We got free Bioré stuff and put down our bags and blankets front and center behind the walkway at the main stage. Angel and I went to visit every booth before the crowds came piling in and met Dan from Nettwerk. He shook our hands and told us he was honoured to serve us cuz we were his first customers in Canada. I bought two sheets of tattoos and went to the Lilith booth and bought a program. Then it was off to see Tammy. Tammy was amazing as usual even though she had a fifteen minute set and Leanna and I were the only ones in the audience who knew all the words to her songs and most of the people where like "Tammy who?" We stood in line to get Tammy’s autograph at Tower Records even though I had already met her twice before and got her autograph I wanted to talk to her and get her to sign my program. Tammy remembered me from Slackfest and when I suggested she come visit Canterbury this year she said that was a great idea! J Speaking of Canterbury, I met EVERYONE from there: Angie, Kyla, Diane, Paige, Erin, Chris, Ashley, Erinn, Lauren with *black* hair and Kira, who had connections to one of the vendors and had a backstage pass :p I was so thirsty by then that I bought a four dollar iced tea at Starbucks and had to stand in line for so long that I missed most of Lenni Jabour. L But I did write on Starbuck’s magnetic poetry board…now if *that* isn’t hours of fun, I don’t know what is! Then everyone but Angel and I stayed at the blanket at the main stage for the rest of the day. However, Angel and I walked to the B stage to see Eden a.k.a. who were from Australia and got autographs from everyone in the band. I also got a poster but it was the last one and Angel wanted it badly so I gave it to her. A nice man at a booth selling drinks graciously filled my Starbucks cup with ice for free cuz I was getting dehydrated again and we walked back to the B Stage to see Abra Moore. She looked kinda different from the picture on the Lilith CD but she sounded great and some wonderful people in front of me let me up front to take some pictures. I’ve never met nicer people then all the Lilith concert-goers. They’re amazing. Angel and I caught Abra before she was escorted to Tower and got her autograph. During Abra’s set I spotted Roberta and Ken from Wild Strawberries off near the artists tent with their baby. Their child is the cutest thing ever J We waved at Roberta and she smiled and waved back and then we went off to see her baby at the fence. Angel and I wove our way back to main stage to see N’Dea Davenport with everyone who had stayed there and grooved to her music. She invited Paula Cole and Emmylou Harris up for a couple of songs. I took some pictures and Angel and I once again got up and moved to the B Stage to get ready for the Wild Strawberries. They did an excellent set as usual but we only saw the beginning cuz we wove our way to Tower to seek a spot in line to get their autographs. But there was already a long line for N’Dea so we just waited. That’s when I saw the crowd forming around the main stage. I gave my program to Angel to get it signed and ran to the main stage to try and get a good spot so I could take photos. Angel was lucky! She was the last person to get N’Dea’s autograph and the first to get Roberta and Ken’s! Diana Krall was up on the main stage. What bothered me was that my friends had waited for hours up front in line so they could get a good spot to sit. But all these other people came and stood on the walkway in front of us so we ended up behind about ten rows of people. Since Nicole and Kris had been sitting at the main stage earlier they got an up-front spot, so hopefully they got great pictures J I took what will probably be crappy pictures of Diana. She’s great! Tons of guitar and bass solos…"Go Russ!" "Go Ben!" Me and two other women kept yelling "Peel us a grape!" until she finally sang that song. I got sick of standing mushed in the crowd so I moved back to where my friends were sitting and joined them and found I could actually see better from there! I also learned that the human body can only stay standing for so long (I’ve got the paining calves and ankles to prove it J) When Emmylou Harris came on I got the ingenious idea that if one of my friends could get me up on her shoulders, I could take awesome pictures! So my pics of Emmylou better have come out good! While I was up there I waved at Emmylou and she nodded J Emmylou was wonderful, she invited some people up to play the accordion and stuff and had the whole audience clapping and singing. First we yelled out "Emmylou, we love you" (see how it rhymes? J) and then "We love your guitars" but she didn’t respond. I don’t think she liked us yelling at her. Our group all sat down between the set but since there was NO room at all we were just kinda sprawled on each other. We vocal students sang our version of Water is Wide to pass the time and some guy beside us told us we sounded good J Then Paula Cole came on. Now I’m not a Paula fan but I knew she was very talented and was excited to hear her sing. If there could be an award for the performer that impressed me the most (besides Sarah cuz she ALWAYS impresses me of course) it would go to Paula. She is the most energetic and dynamic performer I’ve ever seen. She was wearing this black and white patterned dress and was barefoot. She did her infamous scat box sounds as well as some whistling and dancing. She gets so into the music, I love it! J She went off stage and her band started playing this really long intro. Leanna and I yelled "Play Mississippi!" but she never did and it’s out favourite song L The crowd started getting restless and I started getting anxious…I had a feeling something really scary was gonna happen—something involving fire or something…Paula came back on stage dressed in a dress with a feather boa and a white wig. Why is beyond me, but I was interesting none the less. We all did our big group sit between sets again because we knew that there was NO way we were gonna sit down at all during Sarah’s set. We made bets on what song she would open with. I guessed Adia. Stephanie went for Building a Mystery and Paige thought it would be something older. But we were all wrong. Musical goddess Sarah McLachlan opened with Last Dance while the screaming crowd cheered her on. She was wearing her pink, embroidered halter top and a beautiful orange skirt. I was freaking out. Considering the last time I saw Sarah in concert she looked like a tiny figurine, being that close to the stage was making me crazy. Breathe, I told myself. I got up on Tash’s shoulders and took a lot of pictures. Then, all these people in the audience started giving me their cameras to take pictures for them! J Which was great until the damn security guard made me get down :p In my excitement, I can’t remember exactly what she played but when she did Witness I brought out my glowstick! I saw Nicole’s glowstick go up too and a couple in the crowd to the right of me, but no others. Jess, who I met afterwards, threw a glowstick on the stage and Sarah turned and looked at it and kept playing. She threw another one when Sarah was done and she said "Could whoever is throwing this shit at me stop?" But she smiled and put it on her wrist. Sean Ashby picked up the other one and attached it to his guitar. Then she invited Paula Cole up to sing Elsewhere with her. Absolutely amazing. I got Angel to take the pictures for me from then on because she was taller and I didn’t want to get up on Tash’s shoulders again in case the security guard got really mad and took away my camera or something. Then the most amazing song of the nite: Angel. It wasn’t enough that it’s my favourite song and I crumble into little bits whenever I hear it live, but Sarah brought Emmylou Harris out to sing it with her!!! I was crying in Paige’s arms. It was uncontrollable….just so beautiful….When Sarah, Brian and Ash (with his purple hair!) did Ice Cream she let us sing the chorus like she always does and that’s when I noticed how great the audience sounded! I loved it J She mentioned how happy she was to be back in Canada and that she had just came from Texas where it was really hot. Sarah remarked that she wished our society could be advanced enough that everyone could walk around naked. J Some guy yelled "Take it off!" to which she responded "Why don’t you do it first?" Later on someone threw a shirt on stage. Sarah looked at it…asked the audience to "stop throwing shit" at her…read it out (I couldn’t understand what it said)…sniffed it and put it down. When she said she was looking for the moon, someone (I later found out it was Jess J) said "HOWL!" and Sarah again replied "Why don’t you do it first?" so the whole audience started howling J Someone threw a bouquet of flowers onto the stage (there were bouquets we could take at some of the booths) and Sarah picked it up, danced around with it for a bit and then started picking the petals off and throwing them into the audience! Sarah sang a few more songs and then left the stage but came back for her encore, Adia, where once again our wonderful choir of an audience impressed me. While everyone else was singing along, us adventurous vocal students were making up harmonies while people were turning around and looking at us J Angel, Leanna and I used my gold pen to make a sign for Sarah. On one side it said "SARAH" in big swirly letters and "Fumblers love you" and "Love from Ottawa" on the other with our names. We gave it to Kris cuz she was up close to the stage. She held it up but we’re not sure if she got the chance to give it to Sarah. During the course of Sarah’s set we yelled the ever popular "We love you Sarah" and our creative "Sarah, we wanna sing in your band!" Who knows if she heard us. After Sarah’s WAY too short set, everyone came on for the finale. It was Marvin Gaye’s "What’s Goin’ On" and TAMMY got to sing a verse!!! I’m so proud of her! She must have been going insane! Singing on the same stage as her idols…Some of the performers didn’t know the words and were holding lyrics but it was cute. I didn’t know the song but by the end I was joining in with the "Brother, Sister, What’s Goin’ On" parts. I didn’t want them to leave…I’ve never had more fun or met nicer people in my life. I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye to Nicole or Kris and a couple of others who’s names I can’t remember (sorry!) but I hope we can find each other through FTE. The sore feet and legs were worth it. The terribly painful sunburn was worth it. The fact that I had to pee since Diana Krall had gone on stage but didn’t have a chance to till the show was over was worth it. It was weird though…many people were jealous of me for going to Lilith, but I was greedy…I was jealous of the *performers* Now instead of wanting to _go_ I want to be _in it_! Ah well, next year…J There we go! :) Who else went to Ottawa? Let's get some reviews! :) luv Shawna =) ps: Because of the suckiness of my word processor, the J's are :)'s ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe lilith-fair-fans - -or-- unsubscribe lilith-fair-fans-digest ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Aug 1998 18:42:09 EDT From: AMCFLND1@aol.com Subject: Re: [lilith-fair-fans] *BIG LONG LONG LONG* Lilith review!!!!!! Hey! I don't understand why everyone is so uspet. Maybe now Sarah might realize us when she starts to question the whole glowstick thing. And it is a big thing for people to get Sarah to wear their glowstick because it shows that she cares. Good grief! You're acting like this is all your idea, and I don't like the way you sounded. You sound jealous because you didn't think to say it first. How about all those people that yell "we love you sarah!". Is she gonna now think that anyone with a voice box is going to scream that at her now?
