Well, you'll just have to hang in there for *one more* because I'm writing it and I have some completely amazing stories to share. I made fumblers famous! But I couldn't have done it without the help of my Lilith groupies, Sarah, Rebekah, and Leanne. WARNING: THIS IS GOING TO BE VERY LONG. And that is why I must post three separate reviews: one for each day. DAY ONE: Camden, NJ 7/17/98 Some of you may know that I work at MAX 95.7 fm, a Philadelphia radio station. MAX and our rival, Y100, were the the major stations covering Lilith Fair. Since I decided to work the concert, I arrived at the station at 9:45am and a little while later we hopped in the vans and headed off to the E-Centre at Camden. We got there by 11:30 and I had to help set up our tent (right in the front as you walked in the gates) and put up banners in and around the venue. I was only going to work till gates opened at 3 so that I could kick back and enjoy the concert with my friends. At about 12:30, Matt, Jill :D, Denise, and Joel arrived, followed shortly by Jenn and then Susan. The gates weren't open, but there was a side gate open where I was allowed to go in and out, so I got them in and we talked for a while. Then they staked out their place first in line, and since I was dying of the humidity and heat, I decided to head over to the bathroom to fill up a waterbottle and splash some water on my face. As I headed out of the bathroom, I heard "Adia" and thought one of the booths was playing Surfacing or the radio or whatever. A second later I realized.... it wasn't the radio! Sarah was doing soundcheck!!!! At this point I raced back to the MAX tent and asked my boss if I could leave for a few minutes to watch. She told me we weren't allowed inside the pavillion yet-- just the village, but I said I just wanted to stand near and listen. I grabbed my backpack and raced again over to the pavillion. Nobody was asking for tickets yet, so I walked into the pavillion and stood near the back, watching Sarah. She was incredible! A security guy looked at me, but I kept back. Didn't want to risk getting kicked out. Let's see... she did Adia, Elsewhere, an awesome version of Ice Cream, Black & White, and Sweet Surrender, as far as I remember. I was able to move forward to the first row on the left side of the stage and sit there w/out getting hassled. Probably because I was wearing my staff pass. Afterwards, I left the pavillion and headed to the Nettwerk tent, where I spoke to Leanne for a few minutes.. As I left the tent, I noticed Rex chasing after a frisbee on the lawn. So I looked up again and there was SARAH, wearing a beautiful green dress! I calmly walked up to where she was and introduced myself. I really don't remember much of what I said to her, but she was very sweet. I took out the banner that we had made for her at Towson: "FUMBLERS... WE CAME, WE SAW, WE SURFACED" and asked if she remembered it. She didn't. Oh well. I didn't have the Bryant Park sign with me at the time b/c the others were holding it back at the gate. I think she may have recognized that more if I'd shown it to her. Keep in mind that all these details are not frivolous-- they are crucial to the next couple days. I told her she sounded awesome in soundcheck, that I was looking forward to the show. So we talked for a couple more minutes and then I decided not to bother her anymore. She was busy playing with Rexy. Before I left, though, I asked her for an autograph and a picture. I purposely brought an incredible picture of her that Mary took at Bryant Park in case I had the chance to meet her-- and I did! So she looked at it for a second, asked where it was from, and I said a friend took it at the Bryant Park concert. She seemed to be impressed. Then she signed it, we took a picture together, I thanked her and told her to have an awesome show, and left. So that started out an awesome, incredible, nothing-could-be-better weekend!!! I finally met Sarah!!!!!!! And she was very cool! After that I went back to the MAX tent, but there was nothing to do. We were just setting up to prepare for the DJ, who would be broadcasting live from 3-7. So I got to hang out with the fumblers and waited until my other friends showed up. At 2:45 I went back inside, took all our blankets, and set them up on the lawn, right in the front, dead center, so we'd have the best lawn position before gates opened. Alrighty, after we were set up on the lawn it started to pour. We were getting soaked! We had no umbrellas, since they wouldn't let us bring em in, so Jill and I held a blanket over our heads. Waited until it stopped and then headed to some of the tents. God, there's so much to write. I didn't see Nancy Falkow or Paris Hampton on the village stage, but I did go back to the lawn to watch Kacy Crowley on stage 2, and then made my way up to the front where fumblers were standing, waiting for Rebekah! We talked to her guitarist/keyboardist's mother, who was there. Local boy. Rebekah rocked! That doesn't even begin to describe it. I love her, love her, *love* her. She made my week the most incredible of my life. She played: Hey Genius Keep It A Secret Little Black Girl Get Off of My Cloud Sin So Well We were rocking out and she smiled at us and waved. Denise threw a daisy onto the stage for her. During Rebekah's set, I was spotted by Dan Knoff and Nicole Celli, both of whom came over and hung out with us. Cool just running into fumblers, huh? Afterwards I went over to the Tower tent, where Rebekah was signing autographs. Told her since I'd already gotten her autograph on Monday, I didn't need it again, but I just wanted a picture. So said she remembered me, asked my name again, and then we took a pic together! I also mentioned that MAX wanted to have her over to the tent to do an interview with her on the air, and she said she'd go over right after the signing. Matt had also told her the same, since he was over at the MAX tent when they said they wanted to get Rebekah over there. While I was waiting for Rebekah, I watched Emm Gryner on the village stage and she is sooooo amazing that you guys all have to get her album. It's called "Public" and it came out today! Get it-- she rocks! I went back to the MAX tent to see Rebekah, and she told Ali, the DJ, that Matt and Dana had told her that she should go over there. Cool!! Somehow I missed both Morcheeba and Liz Phair-- I think I was walking around the village again. I went back to the lawn to watch Missy Elliot, who put on a great performance, and when she came around through the crowd (in between the lawn and pavillion) I got to slap her hand. Then... brace yourselves... Indigo Girls came on at about 7:40. They were the best I've ever seen them. They were the highlight of the entire show. We were dancing like crazy on the railing at the front of the lawn, and these girls stood in the area between the lawn and pavillion dancing the whole time. It was a riot and sooooo much fun! I couldn't believe how good the Indigos were, and I've seen them a few times before. They just blew me away. Let's see if I remember the setlist: Shame on You, Tried to Be True, Power of Two, Shed Your Skin, Scooter Boys, Galileo, then Water is Wide w/ Sarah, and Closer to Fine w/ everyone. I think there was another song in there too. It was an amazing performance! Natalie Merchant... didn't pay attention at Holmdel, so I did at Camden. She was also awesome-- did the same setlist she's been doing all along. I loved her. We were dancing, singing, screaming "I want to spank you, spank you." It was so much fun. She interacted directly with the audience and did some funky dances. Sarah... ahhh, Sarah. I can't say "She was Sarah" because it was so much more than that. I was on such a high from the entire day. Sweet Surrender was incredible. For Witness we cracked the glowsticks and I never stopped waving mine after that. I was screaming, jumping up and down, enjoying it so much. It was one of teh best performances I've ever heard her do. She was no longer wearing the green dress-- she had changed into what i call a "bad ass" outfit-- bright pink and orange kinda stretch pants and a pink crop top. She was really rockin' on Possession and Black & White. For Elsewhere she brought out the Indigo Girls' cellist, which she's been doing at all the shows, and it just sounded beautiful. Dedicated the song to all the young girls out there. :) At one point she turned around to Ash, who wasn't wearing a shirt, and commented that it's unfair that men can go around w/out shirts and not women and that since it was so hot out, she wanted to take hers off. :) It was so cute. She didn't take it off, btw, you perverts. Jenn was in the 6th row, and told us that when we waved the glowsticks, Sarah looked at her and nodded, acknowledging them. Yeah! Glowstick recognition! Jenn was also holding our sign from Bryant Park... the peace + love = happiness FUMBLERs one that is on the lilith website's scrapbook. Sarah probably noticed it. It got completely destroyed, though, because it was rained on in the beginning of the day, smearing the ink. And it got torn and some drink spilled on it. So it didn't make it after Camden. But, as you will see, it was brought back to life later on. After the show... we were actually able to make our way into the village area pretty easily. As we were leaving, I spotted Rebekah's bodyguard, and then Rebekah. I don't think anyone else saw her at that point, but I walked over and said "Hi Rebekah!". She turned around and said "Hey Dana!" and gave me a hug. I told her how great I thought she was during the encore of "What's Goin' On" (she really rocked it!), and then the other fumblers spotted her and Jill started freaking out, I think. So we talked for a bit and then said goodbye and that we'd see her the next day. Walked a long way to the cars, but were able to get out of the parking lot pretty quickly. The whole way to the lot, I started singing Sarah songs and some others joined me-- Ice Cream and Elsewhere, I think. Matt, Denise, Jill, Joel and I headed down to Newark, DE and crashed at Denise's place that night. END OF DAY ONE. Jenn drove Matt and me, Jill rode in Denise's car, and Joel on his own. I don't know what was going on in the other cars, but we were listening to Rebekah and a little Lisa Loeb on the way down. We arrived at the Columbia Inn about 12:15 and what do we notice but a tour bus outside! Completely coincidental that we were staying at the same hotel as almost all the performers... seriously. It was the closest hotel to the venue! I swear, we did not know in advance. Headed up to one of the rooms, where we met up with Edward (T-boy, and still considered a fumbler), Gemma, A.J., Heather, Heidi, and some others, I think. We decided to head straight to the venue. Leaving the hotel, we spotted Liz Phair in the lobby (I didn't even see her until someone pointed her out and then it was too late to say hi or anything). I think A.J. saw Brian Minato outside by the buses too. Just as we got to Merriweather, about 1:00, Denise and Jill pulled up. We lined up at the gate, pretty close to the front. Actually, split up between North and South entrances to secure good lawn spots. I had a seat in row KK, but Jenn and Matt had lawn seats, so we decided to see if we could upgrade them. This show was supposedly "sold out." At the box office, we found out there were three tix together in row Z, right side, and bought those. Then I proceeded to head out into the parking lot with the scalpers and about 2:30 I finally was able to sell my ticket-- face value, of course. I spoke to a woman who had been at the Towson show, and told her that was me and some friends with the banner and stuff for Sarah. Always nice to talk to someone who had been at Towson. I had more of these experiences later. We munched on free frappuccino bars (AJ ate about 10) until gates opened at 3, and once again got front seats on the lawn. We all headed over to the Nettwerk tent and took lots of pics of fumblers, with Leanne, and all that good stuff. I met Emily, Lois, Miriam, and Hilary. Cool to finally meet all of you!! I think this was Emily's first fumblerumble-- girl, you were so cool! I loved finally meeting ya. Hilary, I'm still jealous! Met up with Paul Kim too, and lots of other fumblers. Geez, our fumbler numbers there must've been over 30. It was amazing. Stood at the front of the village stage to watch Emm Gryner. She's amazing, like I said before. I *love* "Acid" (it's on the Lilith new music sampler disc-- track 11), and I sang along. I'm jealous of her guitar. It was one of the most beautiful instruments I've ever seen, and I wish I'd remembered to ask her what kind. Anyone know? Paul? After her set, I handed her a daisy and told her how much I'd enjoyed the performance. I mentioned that I saw her the day before, and would be back the next day, and she referred to me as a "Lilith groupie". :) I don't remember much after that-- I think some of us headed back to the lawn spot. I wanted to then go down and check out my seat in the pavillion, but Denise and Jill wanted to get a drink, so I went with them instead. That's when the phrase "pulling a Dana" was created. Somewhere between the lawn and this place I dropped the envelope with my Saturday ticket stub, Sunday ticket (fourth row Pitt), and two Tori Amos tickets (9th row) which I had because Jenn had purchased them gave them to me this weekend. Who knows why I kept them all together-- probably so I wouldn't lose them. uh, irony? I had been keeping them in my bag, but took out the envelope when I wanted to check out my reserved seat. I guess somewhere I dropped it. So, I started to freak out and ran back to the food stand where I'd bought a soda. It wasn't there. I looked around the ground near me, but it could have been anywhere. Thoroughly checked my bag, and it wasn't there. Jill and Denise had gone off to the bathroom, but Edward happened to come up to me just as I was having a breakdown, and in surprisingly un-T-boy mode, he was able to comfort me a little. This was during Holly McNarland's set. Up next was Rebekah and I wanted to have fun and dance and watch her, not think about the situation that was going to possibly ruin my entire weekend. So I had a *great* time watching Rebekah again, singing along and everything. She is so good! She recognized all of us again. :) It was very cool. We went over to the Tower tent to talk to her again, and I told everyone about my situation. We decided that I should try to at least get a duplicate of my ticket stub for that day, so Gem and I left and went all the way back to the venue entrance and explained everything to a supervisor. She told me I could get a duplicate of my ticket for that day (since I'd purchased it that morning by credit card), which I did get, but there was nothing I could do about the Sunday ticket, since I purchased that in cash 2 months before. And of course, the Tori tix were gone for good. Gem and I went back inside, and we decided we'd do something about trying to sneak me in the next day so I could sit in my seats. Headed to the Tower tent again, where Rebekah still was, at 6:00. Before I'd left to try to straighten out the ticket fiasco, I gave a flower to AJ to give to Rebekah for me. And when I saw her, she was wearing it in her hair! Checked out Morcheeba on the 2nd stage-- I loved them! But I was still bummed about my tickets. When I got back to the lawn, I saw Matt running up from the pavillion-- someone had found my tickets! I raced down to my seats, and met this sweet girl who had found my tix on the sidewalk near the lawn and turned them into the box office. I don't know why, when I explained my situation to the people in the box office, they didn't put two and two together and ask if I'd lost other tix too! So around 6 this girl went back to the box office, took the tix back, and went down to the seats where I was supposed to be. So, she had been waiting in that seat to see if I (or someone I knew) showed up, to give me my tix back! Matt had found her and she gave him the envelope with all the tix. I got them all back!! I profusely thanked her. I'm still in shock this all happened. Then, I was able to go back and enjoy the rest of the day. I can't believe those tix were picked up by an honest person... ahh, the spirit of Lilith. The rest of the day consisted of the Indigo Girls, Natalie, and Sarah. Matt, Jenn, and I were rocking like crazy during IGs. I didn't care what the people behind me thought-- they were awesome and I was having a blast. And they mixed up the setlist and played Least Complicated! Not as good as at Camden the night before, but close! Natalie was great again too. I can't really distinguish between the days with her performance, but I thought she was awesome again. Oh, Sarah. I deemed this entire performance as the best I'd ever seen her. Angel was incredible. Nothing could top it. Gem was sitting with me and Matt, and we had our arms around each other during the song. Elsewhere nearly brought me to tears. During Witness there were sooooo many glowsticks scattered throughout the crowd-- in every section. Pit, right, left, center, lawn. All different colors. Fumblers up in the pit (Edward & Miriam, I think?) even held up our Towson banner: "WE CAME WE SAW WE SURFACED". Sarah definitely recognized the glowsticks again. Adia and What's Goin' On wrapped up the night perfectly. Sarah was so incredibly good, I can't believe it. Really at her best. And she was wearing the most beautiful green and blue dress. Wish I'd taken pics, but even at halfway back in the pavillion, I figured they wouldn't have come out. Yes, I actually refrained from taking pictures. So someone has to make me copies of pics from that day. After the show I was on an amazing high because Sarah just rocked out and I loved it! WOW is all I can say. :) We all headed to a nearby restaurant, Clyde's, to recoop and actually eat something for the first time that day! We surprised Denise and Miriam w/ little b-day parties too, took pictures, and reminisced over how great the whole day was (with the exception of my ticket fiasco). Back at the hotel we talked more about the day, about Sarah, listened to CDs,etc. Some went down to the pool and played guitar and then were kicked out by security. I wasn't there so don't ask me why. But I wish I'd been there to jam with Hilary. Still, Edward gave me one of his famous massages! Watch out, peoples. I went back to my room about 4am, which I shared w/ Jenn, Denise, Matt, and Jill. Got in bed by about 5 or so. Got up Sunday morning at 8:30. I can never sleep the night before concerts anyway!
