Ashby" "you must head into the show" (said the 15 yr old security guard)…. But it was ok to bring in any sealed drinks, so that was ok to leave… [But what did all the dead-heads do when Uncle Jerry's Band set up there from 1970-1995???] Deer Creek is a real beautiful place. For me, it's been the best out of three LF's as far as food, bathrooms, & Village areas for the other 2 stages. All in all it's not in the mountains or anything but it's a great venue with plenty of room. So Me'shell was real funked out - and she had a good, deep voice but I was really there for other reasons. And it was too bad no one was really payin' attention to her cause it was still real early. Sinead came out w/ Emperor's and also played Nothing Compares, Last Acquaintance, and a song "for all the dead people here today" She's got a great voice, but her songs were somewhat draggin' in some cases. Nothing compares 2U was beautiful though. (Besides one song, I think she played the same songs the next night) IG: Setlist Chickenman Galileo I Don't Wanna Know Ghost Tried to be True Get out the Map Water is Wide Cut it Out> Down by the River Closer to Fine Amy, Emily, Jerry, Jane, Dave, & others… Chickenman - After waiting for many weeks, and then today many hours I WAS READY! And then played a killer chickenman! Especially since Sinead came out a did a GREAT verse/chorus towards the end of the song. I've heard this song at a lot of my IG shows - so this addition (along w/ Dave and Jane) really was awesome. Galileo - was a great crowd pleaser - it really got the somewhat subdued crowd on the feet and goin' crazy. This is always a fun song to see live…"How long…" Great harmonies, it seems on an oldie the harmonies are real mature and they have developed into leading, powerful roles for the both of them. I don't wanna know - great song, and real great to hear saliers & ray comin' together on this song as well… (they didn't mention the Real 3rd Indigo but I'll live) Ghost - once again - Ahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! I was in the back of the reserved, and impulsively (almost trance-like) I ran up as far as I could go to see/hear Emily. The security said "you can't stand in this aisle" …. "BUT IT'S EMILY!!! AND IT'S GHOST…. YA KNOW - PIPERS & VIPERS!!!!" But he wasn't at all moved by my insistence. (Oops - another tangent) Tried to be true - (to be honest, 2 LF's in 2 days - and I'm reading this on the set-list and I don't really remember it…) But it was GREAT!!!! Duh?!!! (Must've been the margaritas) Get out the Map - another fun song, really had that Yee Haa - and I love hearing that little guitar that they play - is that the dulcimer or fiddle (or is that the lap guitar emily plays for HKF?) "I'm gonna drink under the sun…" or something like that… Water is Wide… Ahhhhh- it was great to see Sarah and N'Dea out there belting those beautiful lyrics… I was waiting for this and it was sooooo pretty (especially it was around that pretty sunsetting time of the day) Cut it Out/Down by the River - I've never heard that Neil song and it was amazing!!! Sooooo powerful, I just sang every word at the top of my lungs!!! - much to the dismay of the nice persons around me … But my fave boots are Amy pouring her heart out on all those great Neil songs (Cortez, Rockin') Also, Me'shell played bass and sang & the notes say Shawn(?) on lap steel. (BTW-I heard someone on the 2nd stage play Old Man - WOW…! Another golden oldie of Neil's) CTF - as usual a great ending to a great show and day so far. I wish they could save this for the end of the whole concert (it's good closure) Natalie - never seen her live and even after IG she REALLY impressed me. Not only was she very animated but even her slower songs had plenty of emotion and excitement to them. Jealousy, Carnival, and all the others sounded great. Her final song Kind & Generous was amazing. The final jam just went on for a long time - and it was just so Happy and fun!!! She waved goodbye (band still jammin') grabbed her circus cape from backstage and pranced around like a reindeer - and then she left again, all while the band kept on going… A great ending to a fun set. Even though people criticize her diction or whatever it's called, she sounded great!!! Also, I forget if it was the last song but she brought out SPARKLERS!!!! in the middle of one of the band's jams. She ran all around w/ it, and had so much fun out there!!! (I was tempted to light mine and run up on stage but that would be bad…) ***fizzzzle fizzzle - sparkle sparkle*** Sarah was a lot of fun too! Angel is just my fave - and that just hypnotized me instantly… Elsewhere, Adia, Ice Cream, and everything else sounded awesome… Sorry I'm blankin' on the rest but even after a long day - she really played a great set. Not my fave by sarah but it was still good. The final song was "What's goin' on" or something like that & was real fun too (no big yellow taxi) and it went on for awhile. The crowd was real into it at that point, so everyone was happy campers!!! THEN - there were FIREWORKS!!!!!!!! Right behind the lawn/amphitheater… they went off, and they were great!!! Everyone just stood there and clapped and enjoyed the festivities… It was a special show and a lot of fun… It's amazing that Sarah played her heart out this night but was unable to go on the next. Thanks for listening - (sorry for the length) Have fun y'all! 8-) mike a+e=ig - -------------------------------------------------------- Fair Fans Public Service Announcement: Emergency contraceptives are methods of preventing pregnancy *after* unprotected sexual intercourse. But organizers are facing a backlash as the festival, featuring women stars such as Sarah McLachlan and Bonnie Raitt, draws even bigger crowds this summer with an expanded tour of 57 shows in 41 cities across America. Critics claim that Lilith Fair, which bills itself as a "celebration of women's music," is too commercial and not serious enough about feminist and political issues. "Lilith Fair may be profit-heavy but beyond that it's feminism-lite, rock-lite and quality-lite," writer Gina Arnold said in an article in New Times Los Angeles in which she described the festival as "profit masquerading as activism." "You can't please everybody all the time," sighed Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter McLachlan, who is credited with coming up with the notion of Lilith Fair. "This festival comes from a good place. We're all trying to do the best we can and it does get hurtful when people almost assault our morality," she said before a recent Lilith Fair at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. McLachlan and other festival participants contend the show was never intended as a feminist counterrevolution. WHERE ARE THE MEN? To be sure, men and mosh pits are in short supply, while the mostly female attendees enjoy a benevolent day filled with ballads and vendors selling dresses, jewelry and nail polish. "Lilith Fair never said it was going to be a hard-core feminist or political forum," said Lhasa, an up-and-coming singer with just one name who also performed at the concert. McLachlan got the idea after encountering resistance from radio stations and concert promoters who refused to put two female acts back-to-back on the air or on a concert bill. Infuriated, the 30-year-old Canadian songstress challenged the industry's odds and booked a tour in 1996 featuring herself with singer-songwriter Paula Cole as the warmup act. The tour was a big hit and Lilith Fair was born the next year, racking up $16 million in ticket sales. With audiences that are 60-to-70 percent female and between the ages of 16 and 35, Lilith Fair tapped into a demographic with huge commercial potential. For the first time in the history of the $12 billion U.S. music industry, women bought more music than men last year, according to Recording Industry Association of America. This year's tour, which also features Sinead O'Connor, Natalie Merchant, Indigo Girls and Shawn Colvin, is expected to generate $25 million in ticket sales. "Hands down, this is the most successful touring festival package this season," said Andrew Klein, vice president of Entertainment Marketing Communications International, the sponsorship agency for Lilith Fair. "It's such a success due to the talent it draws. But people like to take a shot at success and they're looking too deeply into this tour." NO PUNCH? The critics say that with all its clout, Lilith Fair treads too softly and distances itself from radicalism for fear of being called "man-bashers." "Some mainstream artists, who did their best not to be associated with earlier women's festivals, have participated in Lilith because it is safe and they feel they will not be accused of 'man-bashing,"' said Laurie Fuchs, director of Ladyslipper, a distributor of music by women. "Lilith Fair is wonderful but unfortunately all the hype has failed to acknowledge earlier festivals, which have been going on since 1974," she said. "They've been largely ignored. It's another example of women being trivialized." She said both the National Women's Music Festival and the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival, dating back to the 1970s, are largely and wrongfully labeled male-bashing or lesbian events. "More accurately, these festivals are celebrating women's talents," she said. "Many people opened the door for this much more mainstream event (Lilith Fair) to happen." Still, most groups hail Lilith Fair as a breakthrough. "These women performers are role models and I think much of the music is serious and consciousness-raising as well," said Kathy Spillar, national coordinator for the Feminist Majority. "In an industry still steeped in traditional norms, Sarah's vision and stunning economic success speaks volumes for the fact that Lilith Fair, by definition, is a political entity whose impact on men and women is immeasurable," said Jennifer Einhorn of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance against Defamation. Spillar said feminist organizations hand out educational material and sign up activists at Lilith Fair. "Both Planned Parenthood and Rock For Choice, our project to mobilize the music industry, have tables at many of the shows," she said. And Lilith Fair donates $1 for each ticket sold to charities.
